The 19th edition of the London Korean Film Festival (Lkff), organised by the Korean Cultural Centre UK (Kccuk) and supported by the Korean Film Council, is proud to unveil its 2024 programme. The London Korean Film Festival will take place at BFI Southbank, Ciné Lumière, and Institute of Contemporary Arts (Ica) from 1 November to 13 November. It will feature two strands; Cinema Now and Women’s Voices, as well as a programme from the BFI Echoes in Time: Korean Films of the Golden Age and New Cinema.

Exclusive: Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) and Laura Slade Wiggins (Shameless) have signed on to star alongside Landon Ashworth (Space Force) in Go On, a fantasy drama marking Ashworth’s feature directorial debut, which will enter production in New Mexico in September.

Marking Ashworth’s first produced feature screenplay, the film follows two strangers on a remote mountain, scorched by forest fires, as they help each other process baggage from their previous lives so they can transition to the afterlife. Ashworth crafted the screenplay after losing his very young cousin, Landon Bellm, to suicide.

“Trolls Band Together” — the latest entry in DreamWorks Animation’s family friendly franchise — brings together some of the biggest names in movies and music.

Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy will be honored with this year’s Desert Palm Achievement, Actor Award at the Palm Springs International Film Fest.

The film awards will take place on Jan. 4, 2024, with the festival running through Jan. 15.

“After working together on five previous films, including The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk, Cillian Murphy and writer-director Christopher Nolan reunite for one of the most ambitious and epic films of the year. Murphy gives a stunning portrayal of J. Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.

Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Peter Chernin’s North Road Company has hired Amy Israel in the role of president of television.

Israel was most recently the head of scripted for Showtime, though it was announced in September she would be stepping down from that role by year’s end. In her new role, Israel will oversee all of North Road’s scripted television development and production. The role reunites her with fellow Showtime alum David Nevins, who currently serves as North Road’s CEO and to whom Israel will report.

“Amy is among the best in the business, the driving force behind a long list of the most impactful shows in our time,” Nevins said. “I know first-hand the value of her unique combination of creative leadership and producorial drive, and I am fully confident she will make a fantastic addition to North Road’s leadership and the ongoing expansion of our industry-leading content portfolio.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds...

Another week, another Netflix Top 10 list. This time, the streamer's charts have been dominated by "Reptile," the new movie starring Benicio del Toro, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Silverstone which seems to have struck a chord with viewers worldwide — especially in Europe, for some reason (more on that later).

The latest offering from Netflix takes the form of a crime drama co-written and directed by Grant Singer in his feature film debut. The prolific music video and commercial director has turned his attention to movies and enlisted del Toro to not only star, but to co-write the screenplay alongside Benjamin Brewer. After debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2023, "Reptile" was sent into the wild with a modest theatrical release on September 22, 2023. Unfortunately, the critical response wasn't great, but that hasn't stopped audiences streaming the movie now that it's finally hit Netflix.

Exclusive: Amy Israel, the respected Showtime Scripted chief, might be headed to Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company.

There is increased speculation that Israel, whose departure from Showtime after 12 years was just announced at the Paramount Global network, may be reuniting with her former boss, David Nevins, who joined The North Road in July as CEO.

Israel, who has an extensive background in both TV and film, has been in talks with North Road, I hear, but sources stressed that there is no deal in place. A rep for The North Road Company declined comment.

Israel joined Showtime Networks in 2011 as SVP, Original Programming and most recently served as EVP, Scripted Programming, overseeing for the development and creative oversight of original scripted series, including drama, comedy and limited series. She was the highest-level Showtime content executive to remain in her role following the major restructuring earlier this year when...

Amy Israel, the head of scripted at Showtime, is stepping down, Variety has learned.

Israel’s formal title is executive vice president of global programming. She will remain with Showtime through the end of the year in a transitional role. The announcement of her departure was made by Paramount’s Chris McCarthy and Nina L. Diaz.

“For the past 12 years, Amy has been an integral part of the creative team and the driving force behind some of Showtime’s most iconic franchises,” McCarthy and Diaz wrote in a memo to their staff. “From the beloved ‘Billions’ to the bold hit ‘Yellowjackets,’ Amy’s love for mentoring staff as well as her ability to nurture and foster talent toward realizing their vision is nothing short of inspiring. Her instrumental role in bringing upcoming, fresh and groundbreaking series like ‘The Curse’ and ‘Fellow Travelers’ to life is a testament to her unwavering dedication and devotion.

The fourth and final season of “Sex Education” has toppled “One Piece’s” reign atop Netflix’s global top 10 list of the most-watched TV series of the week.

“One Piece” held onto the coveted position for three weeks in a row. But on Tuesday, the streamer revealed it had been topped by the final season of the comedy “Sex Education,” which brought in 12 million views. It was then followed not by “One Piece” but by Season 2 of the true crime docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” which debuted in its first week with 7.6 million views. Season 1 of the series also re-entered the weekly list, bringing in 2.4 million views.

In the mid to late 2000s, Timberlake took a slight break from his successful music career to focus on his filmography. He made a few notable projects like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan that garnered some praise from his contemporaries in the film industry. But it wasn’t until his performance in The Social Network that he found his acting getting serious recognition.

He won the role as young tech millionaire Sean Parker in the 2010 Oscar-nominated feature. He even beat out Jonah Hill for the role. Hill might have gotten the part if Fincher didn’t insist on Timberlake.

Cillian Murphy has had quite the career since he first appeared in the 1997 short film Quando. He would rise to prominence in the 2000’s by appearing in Danny Boyle’s post apocalyptic zombie tale 28 Days Later before finding even more success being one of Christopher Nolan’s go to guys in films such as Batman Begins and Inception. It would be that collaboration that would give Murphy his biggest leading roles yet in the massively successful Oppenheimer, a film that will hopefully see Murphy’s name on the short list for Best Actor during this years Awards season. On another, well, a procedural television show like "Suits" might randomly experience a surge of interest -- despite a weirdly delayed reaction, with the surge taking place over four years after it concluded its run on the USA Network. The streaming algorithm is a mythical and unknowable enigma, apparently, but every now and then it can help put the spotlight squarely on the kinds of films that most benefit from strong word-of-mouth reactions.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.

The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.

That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. The German-language film Paradise‘s opening act sets up a movie that is both mysterious and intriguing, leading us to believe we may finally have an original sci-fi mystery that’s unique in its story and made well. But instead, after 15 minutes, it follows the same old uninspired tropes and gives us no more science, only tired cliches and reversed character arcs. I mean, I was actually kind of excited by the fact that a woman leads a company that says, “Stop being ageist,” but at the same time uses the procedures that her company provides for herself to make her younger. It’s an interesting subject that could lead to so many different outcomes! In a time when big Pharma is a hot topic, people would want to eat up such content, but alas, this film does nothing new. If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”

TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.

Almost 20 years after its theatrical release, “Lord of War” is getting a sequel. Vendôme Pictures (“Coda”) will reunite writer/director Andrew Niccol and Nicolas Cage for “Lords of War,” with Cage reprising as arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Bill Skarsgård, recently Pennywise in the two-part “It” adaptation and the heavy in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will play his son.

Principal photography will begin in late 2023, with FilmNation Entertainment representing the international sales rights while introducing the film at the Cannes Film Festival. CAA Media Finance will handle the domestic rights. Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi, who produced the original, are producing under their Vendôme Pictures banner. Nicolas Cage, under his company, Saturn Films will also produce while Skarsgård is executive producing.
