Originally written by Dr. Gary Dresden in 1997, but shelved. By 2007, he made his first film, the short The Victim (which premiered in 2008), with Heath McKnight producing, and hired McKnight to produce December.
Many of the locations, including the hospital, doctor's office, Carter home, etc., were Dr. Dresden's home and businesses.
Producers Heath McKnight and Marina Pronesti had less than five weeks for preproduction, to put the whole movie together with crew, logistics, additional locations, cast, and more, starting the day after Easter 2008 (late March). Production began in late April.
The filmmakers secured the Plant City Stadium in Plant City, Florida, which is about an hour-plus drive east of Tampa. for the baseball stadium scenes. This is the former spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds. Though it was shot in mid-May 2008, the weather was pleasant and not too hot, which is unusual for that time of year in Florida. Unfortunately, it was rainy and overcast for the beach scenes which were shot two weeks later. Producer Heath McKnight said that they got lucky once with the baseball stadium shoot.
