English actor Timothy Spall and Thai actress Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying were among the big winners Monday night at the 52nd annual International Emmy Awards, held Monday night in New York City.

Spall won Best Performance by an Actor for the 2023 BBC crime drama “The Sixth Commandment. Chutimon won Best Performance by an Actress for the Thai Netflix film “Hunger.”

Meanwhile, the Founders Emmy — which goes to people the International Television Academy determines “have contributed in some way to the quality of global television production” through their creative accomplishments — was given to David E. Kelley.

And the Directorate Award — which “honors individuals or organizations for their outstanding contribution to international television” — was given to Sidonie Dumas, producer and CEO of Gaumont. The award was presented by “Lupin” star actor & producer Omar Sy.

The best in global television was honored in New York on Monday night at the 2024 International Emmy Awards, with winners picked across nominees from 21 countries.

The big winners on the night were Drops of God winning best drama series, Timothy Spall winning best actor, Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying winning best actress, División Palermo winning best comedy and Liebes Kind winning best miniseries.

In the best drama category, Apple TV+’s French-American-Japanese manga adaptation Drops of God, produced by Legendary Television, won out against 1980s-set Australian series The Newsreader; the Amazon Prime Video Argentina espionage thriller Yosi, the Regretful Spy; and the Disney+/Hotstar series The Night Manager, an Indian adaptation of the 2016 BBC show of the same name.

British acting legend Timothy Spall went into the ceremony as favorite in the best actor category, nominated for his turn in the BBC true-crime tale The Sixth Commandment, and duly walked away with the award.

One of Spain’s leading export powers, Mediterráneo, the film-tv international distribution arm of leading broadcast network Mediaset España, has hit Mipcom with one of its strongest slates in recent years.

This is led by “La Favorita 1922,” its first collaboration with Bambú Producciones, the Studiocanal-owned production house behind titles that have helped revolutionize Spanish scripted, such as “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and daily series “The Vow.”

Also brought to market are “Detective Romi” and “El Marqués” as Mediterráneo hit several growth axes in Spain and abroad: Modern melodramas with ultra-high production values (“La Favorita”), “lighter” procedurals and true-event-based crime stories. Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams might be starring in her first horror movie soon if the current talks regarding her taking on a role in a new horror-thriller from Sam Raimi goes well. The film is titled Send Help, and McAdams is currently in negotiations to star.

20th Century Studios is behind this horror project with Raimi signed on to produce and direct. Raimi is best known for being the creator of the highly successful Evil Dead horror franchise. McAdams is known for starring in popular romance movies such as The Notebook, The Wedding Crashers, The Vow and Disobedience. She's also known for starring as Regina George in the hit teen comedy Mean Girls. Her most recent projects were playing herself in the comedy sitcom Dave and as Barbara Simon in the comedy-drama Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

LL Cool J spent nearly three decades in pursuit of commercial success, which included a series of forgettable and ill-advised junctures where hip-hop’s first superstar forced himself into stylistic niches that never quite suited him. This makes his 14th studio album, The Force, feel like a breath of fresh air, driven by a clear sense of personal and artistic vision.

The album’s lack of interest in courting contemporary trends is a feature, not a flaw. But the songs aren’t too nostalgic either, and the ever-charismatic LL, per usual, doesn’t take his brand of boisterous smack talk too seriously. If you’re in the mood for horror, international is the way to go. Thailand has brought us a horror anthology series called Terror Tuesday Extreme.

The series gives us eight stories. Each story is based on stories that people in Thailand have told a radio show out there. They are on the supernatural side. After all, the idea of spirits and gods is an important part of culture.

These episodes are also sure to make you think. They don’t have the typical endings that you would expect, which makes them all the more interesting. Of course, some episodes are better than others. Here’s my ranking of the eight episodes of Terror Tuesday Extreme from worst to best.

Making further inroads into markets in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond, Studiocanal, one of Europe’s top production-distribution-international sales powerhouses, has clinched further sales on premium daily drama “The Vow” (“La Promesa”), closing Poland and two Baltic States, as well as France.

Produced by Spain’s Bambú Producciones, a Studiocanal company, Studiocanal and national Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, “The Vow” has been acquired by Polish pubcaster Tvp Poland, state-backed network Err Estonia and state-owned Ltv Latvia.

In additional new sales, Dubai TV has closed rights to Mena territories. French free-to-air channel C8, owned like Studiocanal by the Canal+ Group, will begin airing the series in July.

Mediaset Italy has now acquired all three seasons of “The Vow,” as has Dori Media Israel and Finnish state network Yle.

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.

The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.

Exclusive: Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee’s Thunder Road (John Wick) is partnering with longtime Screen Gems executive Scott Strauss to launch Badlands.

Backed by Andrew Schwartzberg and Jon Shiffman’s Renegade Capital, the independent genre label will feature development and co-fi funds and plans to make two to three films per year.

First up for the new venture will be Arachnid, starring Matilda Lutz. Written by Jayson Rothwell (Underworld: Blood Wars) and directed by Ángel Gómez (Voces), the spider thriller is due to begin filming this July in Madrid. Altitude Film Sales will introduce the film to buyers in Cannes next week, with CAA Media Finance handling domestic rights.

Rothwell, Schwartzberg, Shiffman, Peter Welter, Alexandra Milchan, and Josh Weinstock are part of the Arachnid producing team.

Lutz is best known for genre projects including Revenge, Reptile and the upcoming films Magpie and Red Sonja, in which she has the title role.

Netflix’s romance One Day, which premiered Feb. 8, was one of them — finishing fifth among original shows despite only gathering 296 million minutes of viewing in the U.S. for the week of Feb. 5-11. In the previous five weeks, the show in that slot had averaged 555 million minutes of watch time. Paramount+’s Halo also made its first appearance in the top 10, finishing fourth among originals with 354 million minutes as it opened its second season.

Only two shows, acquired stalwarts Young Sheldon (1.35 billion minutes on Netflix and Max) and Bluey (1.14 billion minutes on Disney+), eclipsed a billion minutes for the week. Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved into first place among originals with 765 million minutes of watch time.

Netflix’s Griselda spent a second week as the top streaming title in the United States, according to Nielsen. It was one of three shows to snag more than a billion minutes of watch time for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had a solid start for Amazon’s Prime Video, coming in just below the billion-minute mark. HBO’s True Detective also joined the rankings as it reached the midpoint of its fourth season.

Scott Speedman has been cast in a lead role of the upcoming Peacock horror thriller series “Teacup,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Speedman will now star alongside previously announced cast member Yvonne Strahovski. Inspired by the Robert McCammon novel “Stinger,” the series is said to follow “a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive.” Speedman will play James Chenoweth, while Strahovski will star as Maggie Chenoweth.

Speedman currently appears in long-running ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” in the role of Nick Marsh. He originally guest starred in the show’s 14th season before returning as a main cast member starting in Season 18. Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love easily maintained its lead over Sony’s troubled superhero pic Madame Web at the Thursday box office after opening the previous day at $14 million from 3,536 theaters, the top midweek opener ever for Valentine’s Day, the studio says. The honor previously belonged to 2012’s The Vow ($11.5 million). Better yet — and despite “meh” reviews — audiences seem to dig One Love and gave it an A CinemaScore.

The Bob Marley biopic earned another $3.9 million Thursday for a two-day domestic tally of $17.9 million. It is also a force overseas, including opening Wednesday to $2.3 million in the U.K., a record for a music biopic.

In North America, One Love is doing more than double the business of Madame Web, which grossed $6 million on Valentine’s Day after getting ravaged by critics and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. It added $2.2 million Wednesday for a two-day total of $8.2 million.

Paramount Pictures’ music biopic Bob Marley: One Love has made a strong start at the North American box office, grossing $14m on Wednesday (February 14) to become, according to Paramount, the biggest mid-week Valentine’s Day opener ever.

The record was previously held by Sony’s romantic drama The Vow, which had an $11.5m North American opening in February 2012.

Bob Marley: One Love is looking to pull in $12 million today, which is the best showing for a Valentine’s Day midweek release since Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams’ The Vow in 2012. Anonymous Content and Spain’s Morena Films, behind box office breakouts “Cell 211” and Champions, have named former Studiocanal executive Beatriz Campos as the managing director of their Spain-based film-tv production venture Anonymous Content España.

Campos will oversee the company’s day-to-day operations working closely with David Davoli, Anonymous Content’s president of international, and Morena Films CEO Pilar Benito, Anonymous Content and Morena Films announced Monday. Launched in May 2023, Anonymous Content España aims to develop and produce premium Spanish projects for a global market.

That is easily said, but several factors work in its favor and will be aided now by Campos’ appointment. As film and TV producers still battle a hugely competitive market and spiralling production costs, companies are reaching out for partners beyond national markets, a structure embodied in Anonymous Content España. Anonymous can also help Morena access U.S.-stars, which may allow their productions to stand out in the crowd.

After being on the list of Netflix’s Top 10 Films for ten weeks, the animated movie Leo is one more on it! The latest list sees some new entries, with The Super Mario Bros Movie still hanging in there. Lift has been dethroned from its #1 position to #3. Netflix brings out the Global Top 10 list for TV shows in English and non-English and films in English and non-English. They tally the number of views a movie receives and the number of hours the subscribers spend on them. The process is the same for TV shows. We will be covering the TV Shows in a separate article.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.

Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.

“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.

“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.

As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.

“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.

That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
