Dark Sky Films has acquired all North American rights to the psychological horror Lilly Lives Alone from Yellow Veil Pictures, which will represent international sales at next week’s AFM in Las Vegas.
The feature directorial debut from Martin Melnick stars Shannon Beeby as Lilly, a traumatised woman who was the prime suspect in her young daughter’s death and has become a recluse who sinks into a world of drugs, alcohol and meaningless hook-ups.
Ten years after the death, Lilly is trapped in hallucinations when she meets Jed as the ghosts of her past strengthen their grip, leading to unspeakable horrors.

If work can be hell, no genre illustrates this better than horror. From Ellen Ripley to Ashley J. Williams, there’s no shortage of working-class heroes populating scary movies. This makes a lot of sense, as the only thing scarier than having to deal with ghosts and bogeymen is realizing that you still have to get up for work the next morning because demonic possession can’t be written off as a sick day.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating 6 blue-collar horror movies featuring characters working thankless (but entirely necessary) jobs while also stumbling into terrifying situations. After all, horror is at its best when it hits close to home, and I think it’s safe to assume that very few genre fans are reading this from inside their Victorian-era haunted mansions.

In addition to starring in Ti West’s 1970s-set slasher X, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) was also an executive producer on the subsequent prequel Pearl and this year’s sequel MaXXXine, and the singer/actor has taken to Twitter this week to tease another collaboration with West.
Mescudi tweets, “Wait til u see what me and Ti West do next.”
We have no idea what Mescudi is referring to at this time, so it’s important to note here that it’s not necessarily even a horror project at all. While Ti West is primarily known as a horror filmmaker, making a name for himself with films including The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament, he’s also strayed from the genre. Of particular note, West directed the Western In a Valley of Violence back in 2016. Point being, it’s not a guarantee that West and...

With “MaXXXine,” writer-director Ti West completes the trilogy he began with “X” and followed with the prequel “Pearl,” shepherding audiences through three bloodstained stories of ambition in as many years. After himself infiltrating Hollywood’s ecosystem as a scrappy outsider with acclaimed projects like 2009’s “House of the Devil” and 2011’s “The Innkeepers,” the three-quel marks West’s biggest film to date. Even so, its potential for success presents him many of the same risks faced by his protagonist Maxine (Mia Goth), who hopes to move past a troubled, violent — and to some, disreputable — past in order to fulfill her larger silver-screen dreams.
Speaking to Variety at what for him is the end of a very long journey, West takes the challenges in stride. Set in 1985, “MaXXXine” is drenched in history and iconography from the time — not only when the popularity of slasher movies like “X” were booming, but during...

MaXXXine concludes Ti West’s ambitious, genre-defying trilogy. We chat to the director about returning to horror and crafting an unexpected slasher with his trilogy closing film.
Ti West’s filmography is an eclectic one. He made a mockumentary with The Sacrament, a traditional ghost story with The Innkeepers, a western with In A Valley Of Violence and his breakout film House Of The Devil managed to recreate the distinct feel and style of 80s horror films to a tee.
But it was 2022’s X that really made West’s name with a gruesome, 70s-set slasher. It was followed by the equally flamboyant Pearl which took inspiration from Technicolor films of Old Hollywood.
The trilogy now comes to a close with MaXXXine, which is an unusual slasher. In fact, in our review of Ti West’s latest film, we suggested it isn’t one.

With films such as The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, Ti West showcases his talent for blending atmospheric dread, slow-burning tension, and meticulous attention to detail with retro aesthetics. West’s work often pays homage to the horror classics of the 1970s and 1980s, reflecting his deep appreciation for the genre’s history. His ability to craft compelling narratives and memorable characters has earned him a dedicated following among horror aficionados. This reputation set the stage for his ambitious project, the “X” trilogy, beginning with the critically acclaimed film X to the fantastical technicolor nightmare of Pearl and ending with this summer’s Maxxxine. The first entry is a vibrant and thrilling entry into West’s filmography, combining his signature tension-building with a more playful and exuberant tone. X is a fun and gripping homage to grindhouse cinema, delivering both scares and a nostalgic celebration of horror’s past.

When we last saw Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) in Ti West’s X, the adult film actress with Machiavellian designs on Hollywood superstardom had just killed Pearl (also Goth), the deranged, elderly killer of all her friends. In MaXXXine, she’s pushing 33 and still grinding in the dregs of the adult entertainment world in L.A., but her savvy agent, Teddy Night (Giancarlo Esposito), snags her a supporting role in a buzzy new slasher film, The Puritan II, to be directed by the Dorothy Arzner-esque star screenwriter Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki).
No spotlight in Hollywood, though, is bright enough to eradicate the grime of Maxine’s past. Following the template set by another icon of the industry’s infancy, Joan Crawford, our heroine’s dirty secrets become weaponized against her. A menacing stranger clad in taut, rippling leather (shades of Cruising) sics his goon (Kevin Bacon) on her, sends...

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

The "Frasier" revival series might take place in an entirely different city than its predecessor and feature none of the original cast, but it hasn't forgotten its roots. In the very first episode of the new show, which recently launched on Paramount+, Frasier can be seen poking fun at "Cheers" — the show on which his character first debuted all the way back in 1984. That same episode also pays heartwarming tribute to John Mahoney, who played Frasier's father Martin Crane in the original sitcom that ran from 1993 to 2004. We'll also be seeing Roz actress Peri Gilpin return to the show at some point in the near future.
And that's not the end of the references to Frasier's past. In fact, the revival does an admirable job of linking itself to the previous incarnation despite only Kelsey Grammer returning from the original show. When Frasier first arrives in Boston, he's flanked by his nephew,...

This post contains spoilers for season 2 of "Our Flag Means Death."
The crew of the Revenge set sail again this week — with a lot more expectant eyes on them than last time. "Our Flag Means Death," the charming pirate rom-com whose fervent fanbase seemed to grow exponentially during the show's off-season, has finally returned to Max for its second season, and so far, it's delivering on all fronts. The first three episodes include multiple death fake-outs (Lucius is back! They also feature a lot of angst. The season 1 finale made it clear that Ed Teach (Taika Waititi), aka Blackbeard, was in a bad headspace post-breakup with Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), but throwing Lucius overboard and feeding Izzy his own toes proved to be just the beginning of his reign of lonely terror.
Izzy isn't dead!), a few well-executed romantic reshuffles and character introductions, and a whole lot of the show's signature zany, sweet humor.

Following a successful world premiere at London’s FrightFest, Dark Sky Films today announced it has acquired North American distribution rights to Herd, an action-driven horror film and the directorial debut from Steven Pierce, co-written by Pierce and James Allerdyce. Herd stars Ellen Adair (Trick, Cryptid), Mitzi Akaha (Bashira), Jeremy Holm (The Ranger, Brooklyn 45, Black Mold), Amanda Fuller (Starry Eyes, All the Creatures Were Stirring) among others. The film, which premiered on IMAX at Cineworld to a sold-out crowd in Leicester Square, London, will be released in theaters and on VOD in October 2023.
The distribution arrangement was negotiated by Greg Newman, Executive Vice President of Dark Sky Films, and Bill Straus of Bridge Independent.

August has been a significant month for Screambox, which celebrated the anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, took a look back at the classic 1985 movie Clue in Who Done It: The Clue Documentary, got creature feature crazy with the sci-fi horror Subject, and had a blast with the Ghostbusters-inspired sci-fi horror comedy The Ghastly Brothers.
In addition to the extremely controversial The Woman hitting the streaming service last week, Screambox has now added Ti West‘s supernatural classic The Innkeepers, courtesy of MPI and Dark Sky Films!
“While director Ti West’s brand of slow burn horror tends to be divisive, as slow burn horror is in general, The Innkeepers presents itself as a worthy selection for being based around and shot in an actual haunted hotel; the Yankee Pedlar Inn,” writes Meagan Navarro.
In the film, “The Yankee Pedlar Inn is in the process of closing.

George Riddle, who portrayed the crusty gold prospector turned presidential candidate Joad Cressbeckler on the 2011 IFC comedy The Onion News Network and enjoyed a long run on the stage in The Fantasticks, has died. He was 86.
Riddle died Friday of duodenal cancer in North Plainfield, New Jersey, his longtime friend Christie Wagner told The Hollywood Reporter.
During his 65-year career, the colorful Riddle showed up in such films as Arthur (1981), The Innkeepers (2011) and The Kitchen (2019) and on episodes of shows including The Sopranos and Inside Amy Schumer.
The former circus performer also played Civil War General George Crook in the 1988 telefilm The Trial of Standing Bear, narrated by William Shatner.
On The Onion News Network, Riddle gained a legion of fans with his turn as the irascible, wildly opinionated Cressbeckler, whose predictions and political analysis were peppered with malapropisms and nonsequiturs.

Welcome back, dear readers! It’s a new year, and it’s time for more new (to me) horror flicks. We’re kicking 2023 off with a flick from Ti West, a dude who had a hell of a 2022 with not one but two hit films in X and Pearl. But today we’re going to be taking a trip back into his earlier filmography, and our companion will be the great Emily von Seele. In addition to being a Senior Contributor right here at Daily Dead, you probably also know Emily as a regular co-host on the Dead Ringers podcast (I’m in the process of collecting all the Dead Ringers hosts as I’ve previously chatted with Nolan McBride and Philip Yount). Emily’s knowledge about horror films knows no bounds, and she brings an infectious enthusiasm to her discussion about the genre.

Vice’s “The 3:07 Am Project” gave four emerging horror filmmakers a chance to play around in ‘The Conjuring’ universe with minute-long morsels of murder.
The Conjuring has proven itself to be a worthy cinematic universe, delivering two proper sequels and a slew of spin-offs, with more creepy content on the way to further expand the multi-billion dollar horror franchise. The reception towards Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cinematic antics has somewhat cooled down in recent years and left audiences wondering if what’s currently on slate for The Conjuring universe will be its last hurrah or if “The Nun 3” or “Crooked Man Vs. Annabelle” are inevitable.
There are lofty expectations in place when it comes to The Conjuring IP, but there were also surprisingly ambitious plans in place even during the production of the original movie. A connected Conjuring universe may not have been on anyone’s radar yet.

A subversive throwback to ’70s sleaze, “X” has more on its mind than shock value. That’s not to say that down-and-dirty pleasures were hard to come by in Ti West’s A24-produced slasher (which hit theaters earlier this year), about amateur adult filmmakers facing off with murderous octogenarians on a decrepit farm in rural 1979 Texas. It is, after all, a film that counted “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” among its sizzling, sex-and-slaughter influences.
But West — whose past retro-horror pictures include “The House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers” — has earned a reputation for enriching his genre fare with exceptional craft and sharp, savage insight.

Well, it was certainly an economical choice. When Ti West made his return to horror filmmaking with this spring’s “X” — a gritty, grimy porn slasher that leaned hard on its ’70s vibe — the director behind such indie horror gems as “The House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers” didn’t skimp on the blood and guts, offering up too much to (literally!) fill out just one film. While “X” boasted an eclectic and exciting cast, featuring everyone from Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow to Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Martin Henderson, eagle-eyed audience members clued in early to its real casting trick: Mia Goth in a delightfully dark pair of different roles, including a particularly murderous one that buried her under gobs of old-age makeup.

“Station 19” is elevating Merle Dandridge, Josh Randall and Pat Healy to series regulars for Season 6.
Healy has been with the cast since Season 4, while Dandridge and Randall joined during Season 5.
Dandridge plays Chief Natasha Ross, whose personal life became messy in a way that could damage her career at the end of Season 5 when someone threatened to out her romantic relationship with her subordinate, Lt. Robert Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe).
Randall plays the role of Captain Sean Beckett, a career firefighter with a drinking problem and a sense of humor that is usually only funny to him.
Healy plays former chief Michael Dixon, who has a history of undermining the crew at Station 19 and is currently running for mayor.

Ti West's "X" is a welcome balm for movie buffs who are tired of content over substance. Utilizing two disregarded lowbrow genres -- porn and horror -- the director of "The Innkeepers" returns with this patient, gory, intimate, and foul exercise in storytelling. "X" concerns a group of young, hungry creatives who rent the worst Texas room one could find in 1979 and attempt to shoot an artful pornography film on the premises; director Rj (Owen Campbell) aims to make the skin flick "a piece of cinema," but the homeowners have other designs on the cast and crew.

Watching Ti West’s “X” (now in theaters from A24) feels like you are watching a classic horror film, one that was secreted away for decades because it’s just that extreme and scary.
It concerns a group of amateur pornographers, who travel to a backwoods Texas farmhouse to shoot their magnum opus “The Farmer’s Daughter.” Of course, while filming their cinematic triumph, they run afoul of the home’s elderly owners, including Pearl (also played by Goth), who longs to reclaim her youth by murdering everybody in the process. “X” is, in part, a throwback to old-school slasher films of the 1970s and ‘80s but it’s much more sophisticated and emotional than that; it’s a nuanced look at how the aging process can turn you into a monster. Youth is wasted on the young, indeed.

Back in 2005, Ti West first appeared on the scene with an odd little horror film called "The Roost" featuring killer bats, the reanimated dead, and Tom Noonan as a horror host. His follow up, the thrilling "Trigger Man," flew by viewers and went mostly underseen, but when West released "The House of the Devil" in 2009, he established himself as one of horror's most exciting new voices. In the years that followed, West put out a slew of horror films, like "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever," "The Innkeepers," "The Sacrament," as well as contributing segments to "V/H/S" and "The ABCs of Death." Horror movies have been one of the most reliable bets in Hollywood as of late as we attempt to emerge from the pandemic. If it isn't superheroes, it's horror films keeping movie theaters afloat. Recently, filmmaker Ti West, who crafted such genre gems as "The Innkeepers" and "The House of the Devil," made his long-awaited return to horror with his latest effort "X." The movie has been praised by critics and is already at the center of a budding franchise for indie studio A24, with a prequel (and maybe even a sequel) on the way.

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” continued its unstoppable run at the box office with a third weekend as the box office champ with an estimated $36.8 million, just getting to $300 million in North America in rapid time. The only movie to make that amount in all of 2021 was “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” so it’s a good sign that movies are starting to rebound. The Robert Pattinson comic book vehicle has made roughly the same amount overseas, although its release in China quickly fizzled out this past week.

Director Ti West’s X is a new love letter to the slasher film genre. This movie within a movie aims to tackle the strict relationship between sex, violence, desire and the rage that manifests when one’s life lacks all of those things. West employs all the tropes involved with pornography and horror and tries to inject personal hints of creativity and originality into the narrative. Will it age well if I watch it again in five years? Probably not. But it provides enough fun and excitement in the current moment to keep audiences engaged.

Part of a young, hungry generation of horror auteurs weaned on the grindhouse canon, he’s dabbled in a number of dark, dingy subgenres, from quick ‘n’ dirty sequels (Cabin Fever 2) to the slow-burn supernatural (The Innkeepers) to neo-Seventiesploitation (the cult thriller The Sacrament). Diehard horror movie fans of the past 15-odd years may have started wondering what happened to Ti West. But nine years is a long time to be out of a game. And in that interim, horror has changed and changed again, earning more critical acclaim with the rise of so-called “elevated horror” (a term West eschews) and more mainstream haunted house thrills.
Yet when we sit down with West, as well as actors Brittany Snow and Martin Henderson, to discuss their new film, X, West has a small bone to pick with the shape of modern horror movies.
