Screambox is headed back into the swamp with Victor Crowley, as the Bloody Disgusting-powered streamer has added a trio of Hatchet sequels, all courtesy of MPI/Dark Sky Films.
The following Hatchet films are now streaming on Screambox…
Hatchet II, which was directed by Adam Green, serves up a ferocious and exceptionally gory dose of splatterific entertainment with groundbreaking make-up effects, a wildly twisted sense of humor, and an even darker and bloodier ride than the first film. In the film, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) manages to escape the clutches of the bayou-butcher Victor Crowley and returns to the swamp with an army of hunters and gunmen, determined to end Crowley’s reign of horror forever.
In Hatchet III, directed this time by Bj McDonnell, the murderous slasher Victor Crowley takes on an entire police department, paramedic team, and heavily armed S.W.A.T. unit, forcing Marybeth and the troops into an epic showdown.

Now, the film from John Leonetti, the director of Annabelle, is streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
“In the horror thriller, 17-year-old Clare Shannon (Joey King) is barely surviving the hell that is high school, along with her friends Meredith (Sydney Park) and June (Shannon Purser). So when her dad (Ryan Phillippe) gifts her an old music box with an inscription that promises to grant the owner’s wishes, she thinks there is nothing to lose. Clare makes her first wish and, to her surprise, it comes true. Before long, she finally has it all: money, popularity and her dream boy. Everything seems perfect – until...

Wooden sculptures of the Pensive Christ can be found in the weirdest spots all through the Baltic States. They combine folk art and Christian traditions into a singular entity concerning the fear of being judged. And that’s what is about to happen to the usually risk-averse Marius as he organises the venue for his wild high school graduation party at a remote cottage. For his drunken and drugged classmates destroy some life-size wooden statues and almost immediately a scarred, masked and mysterious killer starts picking them off one by mutilated one.
A typical kids go to the woods to party and get killed one by one is given a wrinkle in the stereotypical story, with a hero who is anything but. He is a bland, boring character with no purpose in life…...

Screening at the 2023 Glasgow Film Festival, Jonas Trukanas’ Pensive is, according to the director, the very first Lithuanian slasher movie. It went down a treat with the Frightfest audience there and when i met Jonas to discuss it, he told me that its cinema run in his home country had also been a success.
“It's not a very scary film, you know? In Lithuania, it was perceived more like a comedy. I guess a lot of people recognise themselves and the graduation and so on.”
He’s distracted by gentle headbutts from a very affectionate cat, who is known, he tells me, simply as the white one. There is a grey cat somewhere else in his house. As he dissuades his feline friend from taking over the interview, I tell him that I found Pensive interesting because of the way it brings slasher film characters and slasher film morality.

Slashers are rarely a hard sell. Find a group of teens, plonk them in the woods and send a raving maniac after them with something sharp. It’s horror at its simplest and most entertaining. Even the bad ones deliver enough fun and catharsis to almost always satisfy a hardcore genre crowd. In fact, these days, nearly half a century on, most are very deliberately derivative. It’s part of the charm. Sure, the good ones – those that understand the careful chemistry of horror and comedy – stand head and shoulders above the rest. But ultimately, a body count is enough.
So to stand out and do something genuinely different with the genre, as Lithuanian director Jonas Trukanas and his team do here, isn’t just brave – it’s also what some would call “stupid”. Subverting expectations is a dangerous game after all, especially when those expectations are as closely guarded...
