A brutally honest and spine-chilling psychological thriller from R Balki that flaunts a brilliant lead act from Dulquer Salmaan alongside a subtle and memorable cop-act by Sunny Deol !
The narrative by Balki moves in a lethargic pace but has its own beauty and the tight screenplay ensures that the audience is glued to the screens right from the word go!
The interval block and the climax sequences were top- notch and made memorable by haunting music and performances
The references to yesteryear classic 'Kagaz Ke Phool' by maestro Guru Dutt was intertwined cleverly with the narrative and deserves a special mention.
Overall,Chup is an authentic Balki craft that deserves a watch from the cinemas for its novel narrative, stellar performances and beautiful musical score.

Most of us will be aware of what to predict from a psycho-thriller, a cat and mouse game between the killer and the cop, the killer's past and the motive, the climax, and all that. What makes this movie different from other thrillers is that the whole concept which the film try speak itself is something distinctive and never seen before.
On top of all that DQ's performance stands out. One of the good thrillers to be considered to watch in the cinema and won't disappoint anyone, just surprised by the fact that this movie is rated pg15 in UAE with all its blood and gore while it's rated A in India.

Biases first I love guru dutt to the core, Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny Deol.
An extra Mark for the love of craft of Guru Dutt. In the opening credits when his name was mentioned I knew I would be judging this one harshly.
I love saga of sorts with good thriller quotient and love for cinema. The S. D. Burman and O P Nayyar music reminiscence was a welcome pleasure.
The movie has a good message about the harshnesss of some professions like movie criticism how important and unimportant they are and if compromised how they can ruin the pleasure of an audience.
Although I am fond of the work of Mr Sunny Deol and have been looking for his work since Ghayal returns, I feel he was underplayed and underutilized. His character is called Aravind and the Tamil actor who starred in Roza would have been a perfect choice for this role.
Halfway through the movie I felt it was too R Balki like similar to Shamitabh and only later I discovered it was his directorial.
The movie is great and has all the elements you want from a guru dutt tribute from music to lights to story. The presence of stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Pooja Bhatt only add to the brilliance.
Dulqueer Salman is finally finding footing in Hindi cinema and hope we see more of him.
Disappointed with Sunny Paaji being toned down. He is too big an actor to waste in such mediocrity. Hope his next release Baap alongside Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt and Mithun Chakraborty do justice to his onscreen persona.

A movie which really stands out amongst all. This Dulqueer Salmaan and Sunny Deol starrer, directed by the much acclaimed R. Balki is everything you expect it to be. An engaging storyline with good screenplay and just the right amount of metaphor. The movie is hailed by D. Salmaan. He is not a stranger when it comes to delivering commendable performances but this has to be his best work yet. The range shown by him while playing the character of 'Danny' is mind-blowing. The rest of the cast which includes our very own Sunny Deol and a familiar face in the web series world Shreya Dhanwantary did justice to their roles aswell. Even the background score produced by Aman Pant is extremely impressive. Lastly, the direction by R. Balki is what forms the gold petals around CHUP. Balki proved that the most important thing in a movie is it's story. Even though I think the climax could have been shot a bit better and when it comes to the technical aspects of the film like it's colour grading I honestly think there is a lot of room for improvement there. Overall the movie is a treat to the audiences. It has a gist of everything. It's a must watch in my opinion. Don't know about others but this movie encouraged me to write my first review.

R Balki's screenplay and Dulquer salman's acting both were amazing, movie's message was good but story was not, easily guessable, little boring not a thriller only drama. A one time watch not a theater watch. Little slow paced, bobby deol's acting was good but his character doesn't hand any strongness, 1st was okay but the 2nd half made the movie more boring, killer is easily guessable and you can easily guess what could happen next, ending was abrupt not that good, you need more patience to watch this movie, go and watch this only for dulquer's brilliant acting and balki's screenplay rest is not that worth. Overall its a one time and ok ok.

An absolute masterpiece from R. Balki yet again! Must Watch!!! One of the best suspense thrillers with an intriguing plot & breathtaking screenplay. Beautiful background scores keep one thrilled in their seat right till the end. Massive tribute to Guru Dutt Ji. Standout performance by fan-favorite superstar Dulquer Salmaan - He is like art, one can never take the eye away from. Halfway through this review, my hands are already shivering while thinking of the after-effects of it, yet I am taking the risk because this film is worth its appreciation. Cinema lovers are truly going to enjoy this one. #CriticsKoChup Bollywood is back. Thank you Balki Sir!

I don't want to give spoilers but yes every scene in the movie is designed in class and one can be thrilled by seeing the way they have portrayed the murder and every detail has won the heart. The background score is the main protagonist I must say. This film will keep you intact till end.
Such "Story and Screenplay" is something which was missing for a very long time. Witnessing this superb masterpiece through public review was an extraordinary experience in itself. The whole cast and their roles are so magnificently written ..every killer has a story but this story is something which touched my heart! A Must-Watch Film.

I would not call it a very good thriller. That would clearly be an exaggeration. The film hardly makes any effort to hide the killer from its audience which is disappointing and romance seemed a bit unnecessary with the purpose of just filling up the time otherwise the movie ticked on all other fronts like the cast did quite a good job. The way the killer made his statement with his killings was quite brutal and it can be a bit jarring for the audience. It is clearly visible that whole team made an effort to make a watchable Bollywood film which is quite shocking I would say. Overall I would say it is a nice and decent film and from the Bollywood point of view which is habitual of making dumpster fires, I would say this was quite a good movie.

Well directed, well written and masterfully shot. The build up had me glued to my seat, every frame was just a delight to watch. References to Guru Dutt's Kagaz Ke Phool were tastefully done and all in all the serial killer and his various activities were depicted with a finesse that would make one's skin crawl. The cast gave excellent performances and the hauntingly beautiful music was just the accentuation that the film needed to top it all off. All in all, an extremely enjoyable and goosebump-inducing film by R. Balki. Worth a watching in your nearest movie theater for sure. Chup = chills..

If you are expecting a taut thriller, then you will be disappointed. The film neither gives you 'edge-of-the-seat' vibes nor is a 'cat-and-mouse' one.
Plot is something fresh, there's a new serial killer who brutally murders film critic who aren't true to their work. Sunny Deol is the officer assigned to nab the killer, Shreya is a passionate writer who aspires to be a film critic, and Dulquer is a florist who likes Shreya. The story revolves around how the love blossoms at the backdrop of these gruesome murders.
The movie had a very good premise, but missed the trick. With a fresh concept it very well could have been an engaging who-dunnit with a shorter run-time.
Movie is a drama at best, nothing to take away from the writer/director, the performance by lead cast is top notch and they have given an honest attempt in times when big production houses are just repackaging formulas to mint money and not a narrate story!
The issue is what you expect out of the film by watching the trailer. If you know R. Balki's craft and expect what he does best - then you won't be disappointed. The film at the start would make you hooked to the screen, and then comes different characters and their development which derails. The days of "yeh fevicol ka jod hain" ads are gone, and So are those tighter screenplays which make your full bladder wait for the interval!
I personally would've appreciated if Sunny Deol would have atleast Screamed at the killer with a CHUPPPP!! - my gloomy face deserved atleast one smile during the entire.
Overall a good artistic movie, which is not a homage to Guru Dutt and neither is an gripping tale.

More of a drama revolving around too dashing looking hero he fails in his pursuit of thrill, quite a few unnecessary remarks such as a depressive person can turn psychopath it may increase the stigma of already confused mental health they needed more research into psychopathy and the difference between personality disorders and mood disorders, few men hating remarks were also there but it's quite a trend these days so that's okay, regarding it's script it lacks lot of things a good amount of thrill for starters, it is as blant as it could get and you can simply guess everything before it happens in the film. I mean to be honest when you watch films like shutter island and fight club and Raman Raghav they twist your brains in ten directions that's what means to be a psychological thriller, it disappointed me actually there were a few good things no doubt such as the idea itself so can not give 1 star also I am afraid if I be the next victim critique ;)

The movie in this Bollywood era is a masterpiece
The content of murder mystery in relation with movie critics was out of the box...balki proved himself once again with this movie about his uniqueness..the humour was outclass and sharp..the cinematic creation was mind blowing with old songs of Guruduttji in background..this is purest example of a soft dark movie...dulquer played his character immensely well with soft and tender touch Shreya was no less and looked hot sunny paaji as a cop was dynamite even Poojas character was smart and new...
Good makers sign can be seen here as bluntly they revealed the murderer and how the chase with reason of the murders was amazingly revealed ..the maker created the thrill too which keep you engaged tightly till the superb climax
Amazing cinematic experience.

Finally, a movie which deserves good word-of-mouth publicity. Watched the preview show and I am quite impressed with the screenplay and direction.
Background reprised music kept the soul of the film alive. Has one song which I felt should have been avoided to keep the intensity intact.
Performance is good, all supporting casts played their role well.
It was nice to see Sunny and Pooja after so long. Salman's performance looks very natural and impressive.
It's not a typical edge of the seat thriller but is still very gripping which would keep you curious till the end.
The climax felt a bit rushed but overall worth a watch for thriller lovers.

Audience expects suspense in such kind of serial killer movies. It doesn't help if everyone already knows who's the killer from very beginning. Audience should be kept guessing "who could be the murderer?" till the climax. This was lacking in the movie. Otherwise a great movie. Sunny deol was great. Other actors/actresses were ok ok. Good to see him after a long time. Direction was also good. And a relatively fresh story. Though could have been much better with proper use of suspense. More of an art film. Overall worth watching one time. If you are free this weekend and want some sort of enjoyment you can go for this movie.

Chup is a mind-blowing suspense thriller by R Balki. A severely fair and spine-chilling spine chiller from R Balki that displays a splendid lead act from Dulquer Salmaan close by an unpretentious and critical cop-act by Sunny Deol !
The story by Balki moves in a lazy speed however has its own excellence and the tight screenplay guarantees that the crowd is stuck to the screens right from the word go!
The span block and the peak successions were first class and made important by tormenting music and exhibitions
The references to days of old exemplary 'Kagaz Ke Phool' by maestro Master Dutt was interlaced cunningly with the story and merits a unique notice.
Overall,Chup is a valid Balki make that merits a watch from the films for its novel narrative, stellar exhibitions and wonderful melodic score.

"Woody Allen is innocent"
R Balki's serial killer movie is unique & stands on it's own. In Mumbai, critics are being killed off brutally & it doesn't take it long for the investing officer IG Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) to figure it out to be a serial killer's acts. As the city's critics stop reviewing films fearing their lives, it's upto Arvind to figure out to catch the serial killer with the help of Dr. Zenobia (Pooja Bhatt). On the other hand, there is Danny (Dulquer Salmaan) from Danny's flowers, falling for Nila (Shreya Dhanwanthary) an entertainment journalist. There isn't much suspense it is instantly revealed Danny to be the killer.
The brutal killings are all off screen but the brutality of post killing is shown so the weak hearted ones do beware. The music especially usage of Pyaasa's songs is effective. The narrative is slow paced but not too slow to impact the story's flow as the screenplay keeps the audience engaged, supported well by the performances. Sunny Deol, Pooja Bhatt, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary & Saranya Ponvannan, all chip in with good performances. There aren't too many twists but the character arc is twisted enough to keep you hooked.
Recommended.

The movie pulls you in right from the beginning and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout until the end. The story, screenplay, characters, everything was so well written. The acting was top notch as well. It actually succeeded in making me feel nervous and anxious for what's going to happen next. Actors brought life to their characters!! Direction is exceptional......he pace is spot on, the acting strong, and there are plenty of thrills to take your mind off any problems. One of the greatest thrillers I've seen, and it's now on my list of favourites. I give it a BIG FAT TEN STARS!!!!!

Chup: The revenge of the artist
Personal rating: 7.5 out of 10
About the director: It's a Balki's film. He is a passionate filmmaker. I was very curious when I heard about this film. I saw this movie about an hour ago and I could not get out of my seat when the credits rolled.
About the film: This story rotates around a man who becomes a psychopath serial killer because of childhood trauma. He faced this because of his father. If you are a fan of the thriller genre then this film is for you. Sunny Deol played an amazing role here. And if i am honest, Bollywood need films like this.
Last but not least Freddy was better >>>

Amazing combination of different emotions of actors to make a unique story more thrilling.
R Balki directed his vision through Dulquer and Sunny Deol. Shreya Dhanwanthary and Pooja Bhatt gave a new perspective to the film. Every detail in the film is not to miss.
A huge tribute to Guru Dutt's 97th birth anniversary and homage to the late director's film Kaagaz Ke Phool.
It really depicts the pain of all kind of artists, like, painters, film-makers, actors and every creators in the world who suffers from "wrong criticism". You will be totally CHUP while experiencing in theaters.
Kudos to the entire team!!!!

Talented director Balki expands on a one line plot to create a riveting psychological thriller. Truly the revenge by an artist on critics who trash a movie unfairly taking the classic example of the masterpiece " Kagaz ke Phool " which was brutally criticized by critics in 1959. ( This cult movie later called a classic was one of the earliest to be made in B and W cinemascope format ). Movie buffs in general and film critics in particular will find this movie very interesting to watch.
The director pays homage to Guru Dutt throughout by playing out scenes and songs from his films. The song "jaane Kya toone kahi" is used beautifully. The climax is made similar to the setting of the song " Waqt ne kiya...". On a broader plane the director speaks for cinema with lines like " Zinda rehne ke liye cinema chahiye" and " Cinema is art, not a xerox machine ". In another scene it is said that " This is India and here not Scorsese but Shetty will work ". ( Really ironic today because Shetty's latest movie is not working). The genre of this movie can best be described as " giallo esque" considering that there are few scenes of blood and gore and it is a dark thriller delving into the psyche of a criminal. Director Balki keeps the audience interest live throughout but chances are that the present generation may not like this movie since it is nostalgic only for the seniors. Both Dulquer Salman and Shreya Dhanwantary act well as the romantic couple. Sunny has a tailor made role as the investigating cop which he delivers in his signature style.

I usually prefer not to watch thrillers but I was really curious about this one! And wow is all I can say.. The best part is that this is an R Balki film.. One of my favourite directors which is why I am glad I didnt miss it..
Additionally, it is also an ode to Guru Dutt Saab which was showcased in such a beautiful way. Yet another brilliant performance by Dulquer and it was great to see Sunny deol on the screen after soo long.
Without giving too much away, I would recommend everyone to watch this movie .. Fresh story, brilliant performances, something I really enjoyed after a very long time..
Best of luck!!
