Netflix and the WWE are getting ready to rumble, with “Monday Night Raw” debuting live from Los Angeles’ brand-new Intuit Dome on Jan. 6. at 5 p.m. Pt/8 p.m. Et.

The premiere episode, which comes after the two parties struck a 10-year, $5 billion media rights deal, will feature some of the biggest names in wrestling, including John Cena, WWE champion and “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Cm Punk, Bianca Belair, as well as many other WWE Superstars and surprise guests.

The partnership with Netflix will bring WWE’s year-round content to fans outside the U.S., including “SmackDown,” “Nxt” and premium live events such as “WrestleMania,” “Royal Rumble” and “SummerSlam.” Rapper and songwriter Travis Scott revealed during his sold-out concert at ComplexCon in Las Vegas that his new music will serve as the theme song for Raw.

CBS has set launch dates for new seasons of Survivor, The Amazing Race, and NCIS: Sydney. The network confirmed premiere dates for its winter 2024-2025 schedule, kicking off on January 8, 2025 with the time period premiere of The Price is Right at Night and season two of Raid the Cage.

The Hollywood Squares with Drew Barrymore and hosted by Nate Burleson will join CBS’s primetime lineup on January 9th, and newcomer Watson starring Morris Chestnut premieres on January 26th. The FBI trio, Fire Country, Ghosts, Matlock, and Elsbeth return with new episodes, as do the NCIS shows – NCIS: Origins and NCIS.

Christmas is coming early for NFL fans, with Netflix dropping the first teaser for its two live football games set for Dec. 25.

Set to “Feliz Navidad,” the 30-sec. spot opens with Travis Kelce yelling, “What a day to play football baby!” as crowds cheer in the background. That’s followed by a montage of shouting by various players, the teams facing off, Santa playing the drums and outright celebration from both fans and athletes alike.

The festivities kick off Christmas Day with reigning Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. Et, followed by the Baltimore Ravens taking on the Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. Et.

The upcoming CBS medical mystery series “Watson” starring Morris Chestnut has set its premiere date.

The show will launch after the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 26, 2025 at approximately 10 p.m. Et, depending on when the game and post-game coverage conclude. As Netflix looks to bolster its live event programming, the streamer is in talks with BuzzFeed Inc. to stream live episodes of “Hot Ones,” TheWrap has learned.

While the negotiations are in the early stages, the scenario being discussed would see Sean Evans host several live episodes of the popular YouTube talk series created specifically for Netflix.

The show, which currently streams on Hulu and Peacock, puts celebrities in the hot seat as they eat increasingly spicy wings while being interviewed by Evans. Notable celebrities who have appeared include Sydney Sweeney, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Conan O’Brien, Elizabeth Olsen, Jennifer Lawrence, Paul Rudd, Vince Vaughn, Margot Robbie and Ariana Grande.

Joey Chestnut defeated Takeru Kobayashi in Netflix’s hot dog-eating contest in Las Vegas, Nev., on Monday.

Chestnut and Kobayashi, two of the world’s most famous competitive eaters, faced each other in a 10-minute hot dog-eating competition on Labor Day. Chestnut ate 83 hot dogs and buns, beating his own world record of 76, which he set in 2021. Meanwhile, Kobayashi consumed 66 hot dogs.

The live event, billed as “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef,” took place at the Hyper X Arena at the Luxor in Las Vegas. Actor Rob Riggle and former WWE star Nikki Garcia hosted the event, which streamed live on Netflix.

The competition rules stated that Chestnut and Kobayashi could not dunk or pour water on the hot dogs and buns, could not separate the hot dogs from the buns, and had 30 seconds to finish what was left in their mouths after the 10-minute timer ended.

In addition to “The Perfect Couple” (see below) the streamer’s September offerings include “Emily in Paris” Season 4 Part 2, starring Lily Collins, as well as the downright charming “Nobody Wants This,” a unique rom-com starring millennial aughts TV gods Adam Brody and Kristen Bell — this one will be all over your social media feed, so make sure to binge it the second it drops.

On the movie front, in addition to a slew of old favorites, film fanatics’ best bet is likely “His Three Daughters,” a festival fave starring Elisabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne. The film, about three very different siblings coming together in their father’s dying days, is expected to be a major awards contender after premiering at TIFF last year.

The hot dog eating contest that helped upend the world of competitive eating is upon us, with Netflix releasing the first trailer for the long-awaited rematch between glizzy gobbling foes Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi.

The 50-second teaser has everything — and by everything, we mean dramatic narration, booming orchestral music, and some extreme close-ups of hot dogs dripping with what is presumably hot dog water and not sweat. “To be the greatest, it takes hunger few understand,” the narrator bellows.

Netflix beat Wall Street expectations with strong second-quarter financial and subscriber growth (8 million subscriber adds for 277 million in total worldwide) reported on July 18. But management forecast slower growth ahead — setting expectations for lower paid net additions next quarter compared to the year prior — partly because it has already reaped gains from its successful password-sharing crackdown, launched about a year ago.

Meanwhile, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters discussed the potential benefits of generative artificial intelligence during their earnings chat and also gave updates on Netflix’s advertising tier, which has been in place for 18 months and now accounts for 45 percent of all signups in markets with that tier.

Exclusive: Top Gun: Maverick breakout actor Danny Ramirez is set to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in an untitled detective movie from director Todd Haynes.

Details have been thin on the ground so far, but the movie is said to follow two men, one played by Phoenix, who are intense lovers and leave California for Mexico. Additional casting is underway. Haynes’ regular producer Christine Vachon is producing as well as Pam Koffler.

Ramirez will be seen next in Marvel’s Captain America: New World Order in which he will reprise his role as Joaquin Torres from the Marvel series The Falcon & the Winter Soldier, where he co-starred opposite Anthony Mackie. Jac Cron’s Chestnut is undoubtedly more instructive than it is enjoyable. Instructive because it brings to the fore many of the dominant features of Gen Z gloom––aimless drifting, technological alienation, suppression of creativity, hook-up culture––and organizes them within a modern campus-movie structure. Relatively dull because there is little feeling or intelligence in its wallowing; no wit or humor in its dialogue; and no respite from the exhausting falsity underlying its theme, namely that being turned down by someone you just met at a bar can, or should, be raised to the level of universal angst.

The plot, such as it is, revolves around the callow, twinkly-eyed Annie, who, in the week before leaving college, strikes up a friendship with servers Danny and Tyler. The trio meets nightly, mostly to exchange suggestive looks and banal what-are-you-drinking pleasantries in the hope that one of them will make a move.

It’s easy to see why a film like “Chestnut” might appeal to leading lady Natalia Dyer. This story of a young woman on the cusp of change isn’t too dissimilar from what’s happening in her own career right now. Just as Annie ponders the future, stuck in her uni town for the summer ahead of a new life in LA come fall, so too is Dyer contemplating a new world beyond “Stranger Things,” the Netflix behemoth that’s finally set to end later this year.

Judging by this indie and previous projects such as “Mountain Rest” and “Yes, God, Yes,” life after Hawkins will be far more grounded for the most part, yet in “Chestnut,” her character Annie still floats somewhat aimlessly. CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. The 47th annual San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, also known as Frameline47, has unveiled the line-up for its June 14-24 run.

The programme of nearly 90 films includes 12 world premieres, 16 North American premieres and nine US premieres, which will screen at the historic Castro Theatre and a number other venues around San Francisco and Oakland.
