Signal 2 Confirms Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hye Soo, and Jo Jin Woong’s Return ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Get ready, fans, because Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hye Soo, and Jo Jin Woong are set to join hands once again for the second season of Signal. The smash-hit series is finally returning after 9 years. In 2016, it was first released, narrating the story of a group of police detectives who mysteriously connect with the past to solve a cold case. Back in February, the series was confirmed for another season; now it has been officially announced that the lead cast will be reprising their respective roles.

On March 5, tvN, the network channel that broadcast Signal back in 2016, shared a post on social media featuring the lead trio: Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hye Soo, and Jo Jin Woong. “Signal, a drama which received great love, will be returning with ‘The Second Signal’ (literal translation),” the caption read.

Ahead of releasing the highly anticipated second season of Weak Hero Class season 2, Netflix has finally picked up the license to the first season of Weak Hero Class, which will be streamed globally on the streaming service from March 2025.

Weak Hero Class is a South Korean action-drama series written and co-directed by You Su Min, with Park Dhan Hee as the other co-director. It is the adaptation of the popular webtoon Weak Hero from author SeoPass.

Disney+ has a new thriller from Korea coming this summer called “The Tyrant” that sounds epic! It’s about a secret project the South Korean government had to make a super virus that could boost their power in the world. But when US spies find out, things get crazy!

The show follows a group of rogue scientists who create this virus, called “The Tyrant Project.” Their plan was to use it to make South Korea more important globally. But then American agents catch wind of what they’re up to and demand the scientists hand over all the virus samples. Yikes!

Disney+ is adding another series to its fast-growing Korean drama library, picking up the action spy show The Tyrant.

The series tells the thrilling story of the race to find a bioweapon that is stolen during a secret handover between Korean and US intelligence agencies. The logline reads: “After years of toiling away on a secret project designed to drastically enhance human abilities, the Korean government’s plan is exposed by U.S. intelligence agencies. Furious about being kept in the dark, the U.S. demands all samples be handed over and the project be immediately shut down. But when the covert handover is attacked by an unknown party, agents from both sides will have to work together to avoid the dangerous new formula falling into the wrong hands.”

Cj Enm (Hong Kong), a channels and content distributor that is part of the Korean Cj Enm conglomerate, has picked up pay-tv rights in parts of Asia to a handful of Korean series that were co-financed by streaming platform Tving and Paramount+. The deal was struck with Paramount Global Content Distribution.

The productions are part of a global strategic partnership between Cj Enm and Paramount Global that was announced in December 2021.

The deal was announced on the eve of the Asian TV Forum (Atf), which kicks off next week in Singapore.

The series debut first on Tving in Korea and on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They then move to the Cj Enm-owned channels tvN and tvN Movies in the first window pay-tv slot in Southeast Asia.

Independent Korean film sales agent, M-Line Distribution is bringing a total of 26 films to Busan’s Asian Content & Film Market (Acfm) this year.

Eight of them are screening at the Busan International Film Festival and a handful have planned releases in the fourth quarter of 2022 or early 2023.

M-Line is handling sales on “Jiseok,” the documentary feature about the Busan festival’s co-founder and former head programmer who died in 2018 and now has a festival section named in his honor. The film plays at the festival as a Biff Special Screening.

“Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area” has become Netflix’s latest Korean-made international hit. The Korean remake of “La Casa de Papel” (aka “Money Heist”) is in first place on the streaming giant’s Global Non-English top ten chart over the last week.

The series premiered on Friday (June 24), meaning that it only had three days to claim its spot in chart that covers the period June 20-26. During that time, it was played for 33.7 million hours. The series was also the number one show in South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

It joins other Korean shows which have scored well globally for Netflix. In the first half of 2022, shows including “All Of Us Are Dead,” “Juvenile Justice” and “Business Proposal” have all reached #1 with global audiences, the company reports. Last year, Netflix and “Squid Game” helped Korean content reach a new level of global audience consciousness.

The success of Korean shows “Vincenzo” and “Squid Game” and Japanese anime such as “Attack on Titan” are justifying Netflix’s heavy spending on Asian film and TV content.

The streaming giant is forecast to grow its revenues in the Asia-Pacific region by 24 in the current year as subscriber numbers swell by 20, according to new research, from Singapore based consultancy Media Partners Asia.

That optimism stands in contrast to investment sentiment in January when Netflix announced its December quarter and 2021 full year data and a spooked the financial community with a cautious (global) first quarter outlook.

Media Partners Asia’ latest note on the company indicates that Netflix could grow Apac revenues by 24 in the current year to December, to 4.1 billion. Subscriber numbers are forecast to climb 20 to 39.1 million. The strongest growth is in Australia, Japan, South Korea and parts of Southeast Asia.

For ten of the 13 weeks in the first quarter so far this year, Korean shows have held top spot in Netflix’s global non-English series ranking.

Romantic comedy “Business Proposal” is currently the top non-English series for the third week in a row, and is Netflix’s third-ranking series of all origins, behind only “Bridgerton” (seasons 1 and season 2) with over 32 million watch hours.

“Business Proposal” has played particularly strongly in Asia, ranking as the top series in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam and in second place in India and Sri Lanka in the last week. The recent season one finale of “Business Proposal” stirred social media reactions praising its fast-paced storytelling and charming ensemble cast.
