There are always secrets in a small town, yet someone always spills them to the wrong person.

Fox’s Murder in a Small Town has all the elements of the perfect murder mystery. However, since it is co-produced by Canada’s Sepia Films, it is not as gruesome as some U.S. procedurals.

Murder in a Small Town Season 1 Episode 1 opened with the murder scene. In many ways, their format reminded me of another Canadian procedural –Motive — but the suspect wasn’t as clear this time.

The series premiere was adapted from L. R. Wright’s initial Karl Alberg novel, “The Suspect.” While it wasn’t a carbon copy, many details were similar.

Since I guessed who the suspect was fairly early on, Murder in a Small Town focused more on the motive.

After production on Fox’s upcoming series Murder in a Small Town wrapped on the southern Sunshine Coast of Canada in mid-May, star Rossif Sutherland headed to America’s Sunshine State to be with his father, Donald Sutherland, who would die a month later. Rossif was actually scheduled to do voice-over (Adr) work for the show from Miami on the day his father died — one of several elements that tie the two men to Murder in a Small Town, a passion project of Donald’s for 30 years. They will be joined by newer talents – Vier Nev, behind “A Mind Sang” – João Carrilho, Patrícia Figueiredo and Natália Azevedo Andrade – who together deliver an eloquent snapshot of the burgeoning state of Portuguese animation.

Over the last 30 years, Portuguese animation has won ever more prizes for usually 2D short films of dazzling beauty, experimentation and sometimes social point. The career of Regina Pessoa, who delivers a masterclass at Annecy, is a case in point.

Animation remains in Portugal a vocational passion. In one case in point, Ribeiro, after scoring praise and plaudits with feature film “Nayola,” will present a short film, “The Flower and the Fish,” which marks another new direction in vastly eclectic career.

Yet Portuguese animation is in the throes of industry take-off.

As ever more Portuguese directors plan their first animated feature, Annecy is staging a timely Tribute to Portuguese Animation, its 2024 Country of Honor, with a seven section spread of key titles.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.

Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Influential Italian auteur Francesco “Citto” Maselli who worked with Lucia Bosé, Claudia Cardinale, Shelley Winters and Valeria Golino on films that combined his political passion with his bent for female-centered dramas, has died in Rome.

Maselli, who was known for making left-wing militant cinema, was 92.

The director’s death was announced to Italian news agency Ansa by Maurizio Acerbo, leader of Italy’s small Communist Refoundation Party, the group of die-hard Italian leftists that Maselli championed, and confirmed by the director’s wife. The exact cause of Maselli’s death was not revealed.

Born into a cultured family originally from Italy’s Southern Molise region and raised in an intellectually stimulating environment – his father was an art critic – Maselli participated at a very early age in Italy’s partisan Resistance movement against fascists and German occupiers and as a young man started asserting his belief in Communism.

“The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, led the nominations for the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) as the full list of nominees was unveiled on Monday night local time, picking up 11 nods in the film category.

“Bad Sisters” – Sharon Horgan’s Apple TV+ mystery series – led the pack in the drama category with 12 noms.

Coming off the back of a stellar year for Irish film and television, the nominations include a number of familiar names and titles, including Paul Mescal, who has been nominated for best lead actor in a film for “Aftersun” and best supporting actor in a film for “God’s Creatures” while Farrell is also competing in both categories, both for his star turn in “Banshees” and his supporting role as Penguin in “The Batman.”

With just a few days until the 2023 Oscars, hot contender The Banshees of Inisherin has been given a boost on home soil.

Martin McDonagh’s period tragicomedy — which has nine Academy Award nominations (an all-time Irish record) — has now landed the most film nods this year for the Irish Academy Awards.

Announced by the Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA), Banshees has 11 nominations, including best film and, as with the BAFTAs and Oscars, the film has been nominated in all of the performance categories for its main cast of Colin Farrell (who also got a nod for supporting actor for The Batman), Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon. Banshees‘ 11 nominations is the same number in 2022 amassed by Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl, which is now also in contention for an Oscar in the international category.

Further down the list, Frank Berry’s immigration drama Aisha — starring Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor — landed 10 nominations.

Aidan Turner returns to US TV screens next month, and we could not be more excited.

AMC Networks’ Sundance Now today released the trailer for its original five-part thriller, The Suspect, starring the Poldark, Leonardo, and The Hobbit veteran.

The Suspect is based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed crime writer Michael Robotham.

All five episodes of the drama will premiere Thursday, November 3 on Sundance Now and AMC+.

The series follows Doctor Joe O'Loughlin (Turner), who appears to have the perfect life - a devoted wife, a loving daughter, successful practice as a clinical psychologist, media profile and a publishing deal.

He's even a hero online after rescuing a young patient who was ready to jump from the tenth floor of the hospital where Joe works.

So it is over. The Suspect, ITV’s glossy five-part crime drama has come to a close and as predicted it was filled with twists right up to the end. Twists some of us had vaguely guessed at, but more gloating on that later.

Anyway, at the start of the fifth final episode our ‘hero’ Dr Joe O’Loughlin (Aidan Turner) is on the run. He’s now been fingered for two murders, Catherine, the nurse who accused Joe of sexual assault, and Cara, Joe’s friend, who we are constantly reminded is a sex worker. They’re not even the only victims. Erskine, the doctor who accused Bobby Morgan’s father of abuse has also been found dead in his house. The end of episode three of ITV’s The Suspect, based on Michael Robotham’s book, found our Doctor Joe O’Loughlin (Aidan Turner) almost at rock bottom. And it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

The case against him for the murder of Catherine is looking pretty strong in the eyes of detective Devi and Ruiz based on very strange behaviour from Joe (he has fibbed A Lot) as well as circumanstial evidence all pointing in his direction. He’s either guilty, or someone really is out to get him.

Could it be his long time friend Doctor Gerald Owen (Adam James) aka Jack – who has the same initials as him? Jack heads to the police to come clean that he was the J.O. in Catherine’s journal which has now been discovered.

A few words about Jack and his inconsistent behaviour.

Doctor Joe O’Loughlin might not be a murderer, but he can certainly be a bit of a dick. In episode three of ITV’s prime time crime drama The Suspect, the psychologist accused of murder, played by Aidan Turner, launches his own further investigation into who might have killed Catherine, by trying to persuade fellow professionals to break their ethical code of conduct by revealing confidential patient information.

If you’re with the show this far you will recall that Catherine, a former patient of Joe’s who accused him of sexual assault in the past, but withdrew the complaint, was found murdered on the same day that Joe and his family were visiting the cementary where her body was dumped.

British broadcasters are reviewing their TV schedules daily in the lead up to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II next Monday, striking a balance between tribute programing and some shows that were previously due to air.

Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday aged 96 and the country is in mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the globe and multiple events canceled.

The organizers of the annual London TV Screenings announced Thursday that next year’s event – the third edition – will run from Feb. 27 to March 3. As well as the five distributors that founded the event, participants will include 17 others, such as the international distribution arms of NBC, Paramount and Warner Bros.

The first in-person event earlier this year, which followed the online event in 2021, was attended by more than 500 international buyers. At the third edition, the founding distributors from the inaugural event in 2020 – All3Media Intl., Banijay Rights, Entertainment One, Fremantle and ITV Studios – are to be joined by a further 17 partners, with others likely to take part.

Oh Doctor O’Loughlin, for a “brilliant” man you are a very silly boy. In episode two of ITV’s crime thriller The Suspect, based on the novel by Michael Robotham, the clinical psychologist with the formerly “perfect life” has learned absolutely no lessons from episode one.

To recap, a young woman is found dead, stabbed 21 times, buried in a shallow grave in a cemetery. Either by coincidence, or for nefarious reasons, O’Loughlin talked himself into a job consulting on the case by muscling in on a meet up between young Detective Devi (Anjli Mohindra) and some sex workers he’s pals with.

Then once he’s brought into the morgue to see the body, he claims he doesn’t recognise the woman and yet sneaks back into the room by memorizing the code, foolishly (we guess) assuming a police morgue wouldn’t have CCTV up the wazoo.

Alexander Armstrong has explained his decision to turn down a role as host of Countdown.

The presenter was previously offered the position on the long-running Channel 4 quiz show, but turned it down in favour of Pointless, his lighthearted BBC quiz show.

Aren’t we all sick to the teeth of British crime thrillers by now? The major broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5, they’re all to blame – have whittled down the genre to a slick, revoltingly homogenous formula. Just switch out a few proper nouns, spin a wheel to decide who the killer is, and roll film. The Suspect, ITV’s latest five-episode mystery drama, is made in exactly this mould – if you’d told me I was watching Vigil, or Trigger Point, I’d have believed you. But does that make it bad? Not necessarily.

At the centre of The Suspect is Aidan Turner, playing Joe O’Loughlin, an eminent clinical psychologist whom we meet as he talks a young brain tumour patient down from a ledge. In an instant, he becomes the “rooftop hero doctor” to the world. Privately, however, he’s struggling with a recent diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease.

Aidan Turner has explained why he finds it “vaguely insulting” when fans request a selfie with him.

The 39-year-old Irish actor rose to fame for leading BBC One’s 2015 drama series Poldark, which ran for five seasons.

Promoting his newest ITV series, The Suspect – which premiered earlier today (29 August) – Turner spoke to What to Watch about “bizarre” fan interactions.

“It’s usually for a selfie but what I find funny is they’ll often say, ‘It’s not for me. It’s for my mum who is a big fan’, or ‘My little brother loves that thing you were in,’” he explained.

“Which is cool, but it’s just bizarre. I know it happens to a lot of other actors too. It’s vaguely insulting!” Turner said.
