Pop star Chappell Roan spoke about her mental health, falling in love and more during a Grammy Museum event Thursday night.
In a conversation moderated by musician Brandi Carlile, the 26-year-old singer and her producer Daniel Nigro broke down the making of several songs on her hit album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The intimate event was part of the museum’s spotlight series.
“It just took a lot of years to convince people,” Roan told the crowd about why it took her and Nigro years to finish her debut album.
Roan’s album, which has spent 32 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, was released in September 2023 but took five years to complete. “I had no money. I had no numbers backing me up. I had an EP that did not do well by the music standards. I had toured, but no headlines,” she said. “There was nothing backing me up.

Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for Love Hurts, starring Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan and from producers of Nobody and Violent Night. The film opens in theaters on February 7, 2025.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t break up with your past. This Valentine’s Day, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan rockets into his first major leading man role as an unlikely hero, a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. Spoiler alert: He won’t.

Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose, a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy.

Exclusive: It’s no accident that a new trailer for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F looks and sounds a heckuva lot like the trailer for the original 1984 movie starring Eddie Murphy.
That’s because it was made by Benedict Coulter, the veteran editor who cut the first trailer for Beverly Hills Cop 40 years ago while working for Kaleidoscope Films. At the time a frustrated musician who ended up at one of those Hollywood trailer companies, Coulter was one of only a handful of artists who cut trailers for motion pictures back in the days of leg warmers, Michael Jackson wannabes and the Pointer Sisters.
Coulter’s unique style was to make kick-ass teasers with unforgettable songs (he would go on to cut the trailer for Top Gun). Netflix was so enamored with the way Coulter promoted Murphy’s breakout performance that it asked Coulter to cut a special...

Alicia Keys was doing a meditation Tuesday morning to try to stay calm amid some nerves ahead of the Tony nominations announcement.
After finishing the meditation, Keys said she received a call, alerting her to the fact that Hell’s Kitchen, the semi-autobiographical musical for which she wrote the score and arranged the music, had been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including best musical. And that’s when she lost her cool.
“I kind of lost it, kind of freaked out, and I was super excited, particularly that all of the collaborators on this project are seeing so much love and so much greatness for their brilliance. I’m so excited for everybody and for Hell’s Kitchen. It’s just like, “Whoa!,” Keys said.
Keys has been working on this project for 13 years, with collaborators including book writer Kristoffer Diaz, director Michael Greif and choreographer Camille A Brown, and an Off-Broadway run in the fall.

Watch the exclusive video interview above.

In somewhat of an odd year for television, one genre remained a consistent force through it all: heist shows. Just as 2023 began with the release of Netflix's inventive anthology Kaleidoscope on January 1, the year closes with the long-awaited premiere of Berlin, a prequel to Spanish hit Money Heist, on December 29. The intervening months brought the arrival of several other shows about armed robberies — planned and accidental; successful and foiled — and the criminals behind them, and though some failed to leave a lasting impression, the best of these series blended crime drama conventions with a fresh perspective, whether via nonlinear storytelling, social commentary, or a surprising romantic element.

Netflix’s release of viewing data for virtually its entire library provided the broadest public glimpse to date into the performance of movies and TV series on a streaming service. It could also prove to be a boon to the people who do business with the company.
The streamer on Dec. 12 put out a list of every movie, special and season of TV that drew at least 50,000 hours of viewing worldwide between January and June of 2023 and said it plans to issue similar semiannual reports in the future (with potentially less lag between the end of the reporting period and the release of data). Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told reporters the company has been on a “continuum” of becoming more transparent with data in the past couple of years — even as he insisted that it shares “much more detailed information” with creators.

Abstract art plays a featured role in the first few episodes of Hulu’s new heist drama Culprits. A Rothko exhibit is the site of an early meeting between two aspiring criminals, and the artist’s canvases are a topic of conversation. A later episode walks through a full room of striking works, a Mondrian here, a Kandinsky there. Nobody discusses the paintings this time, but London is full of places to hold meetings, so this interest on series creator J Blakeson’s part feels more than incidental.
Like many things in Culprits, however, the eye for 20th-century masterworks ends up being more of a red herring than a fascination with substance, a burst of color or geometry to attract the eye more than a point of thematic resonance. Despite a fragmented narrative and a couple of interesting characters, very little in Culprits feels all that modern and nothing so much as flirts with abstraction.

Chappell Roan was getting ready to perform in London this summer when one of the drag queens she’d picked to open her show told her: “You’re a drag queen. Jennifer Reeder's "Perpetrator" is a spiritual successor to 2019's John Waters-y, super-sensory-heightened debut "Knives and Skin," serving vibes as a main course. That's not entirely a damning accusation. Reeder's style provokes delirium and allows her characters to float through hallucinogenic universes, which the filmmaker somehow controls. "Perpetrator" feels indebted to everything from high school humor in "Clueless" to body horror yuckiness in "Society" to uniquely pubescent terror in "Teeth" — a tonal collision that some won't survive, and others will slurp down like Four Lokos at an underage pregame.

Jane Birkin graced the front pages of most French newspapers on Monday as France mourned the death of the late British actress and singer who enjoyed icon status in the country that she had called home since the late 1960s.
“Our tears can’t change anything,” proclaimed Le Parisien newspaper, which first broke the news of Birkin’s death at the age of 76 on Sunday.
Libération ran with the simple headline “Without Jane”, while regional newspaper Le Maine Libre referred to the late actress as “The Eternal English Bride of France”.
International obituaries have highlighted Birkin’s notorious performance with partner and late bad boy of French pop music Serge Gainsbourg on the 1968 pop song, ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, or the fact she inspired the Hermès Birkin bag.
For the French, she was much more.

The saying “90 percent of directing is casting” has been attributed to everyone from John Ford to Robert Altman to Martin Scorsese, but in the case of Netflix’s much-buzzed-about romantic political drama “The Diplomat,” you might even be able to crank that number to 95, especially as casting director Julie Schubert tells it, getting your first-choice leads is the ultimate Hail Mary pass.

And one of the hardest working people you will ever meet in your entire life. She’s top to bottom: pure joy.”
As written, Ambassador Kate Wyler checks a lot of boxes for Russell’s abilities, but for the role of Kate’s roguish, charismatic, upward climbing husband-with-benefits Hal, there’s...

The American population is growing more diverse every day. By 2060, less than 45% of the total population in the United States will be white, and content providers like streaming services and broadcast networks have to reflect the diverse makeup of the populace in order to remain relevant.
New data from omniscreen data and measurement company Samba TV shows which groups are currently seeing the most representation, and on which platforms. It found that Black, Asian and Hispanic audiences were more likely to watch content that featured diverse casts, but that providers still have work to do when it comes to representation, especially for Hispanic and Asian viewers.
Across linear and streaming sources, only 10% of lead actors in shows and movies were Hispanic. The 2020 Census indicates that 18% of the U.S. population identifies as Hispanic currently, which means Hispanic viewers are underrepresented on the screen.
