Full disclosure: I’m not completely well acquainted with the work of Kanye West, save for half a dozen songs and his very public persona. His egoism almost seems to speak for itself, but there a moments where even I, as someone who rarely listens to rap, understand that there’s more to him than meets the Tweet.
Perhaps part of West’s appeal is his ability to play off of himself intentionally. He has a good sense of humor, and there appears to be a self-awareness in his work, especially in his presentation of his public persona. Kanye West is, to my meager understanding, just as calculated of an artist as Lady Gaga or anyone else.
Spike Jonze, who was first a maestro of the music video before he moved into film, just might be the best person to continue to help hone West’s vaguely Joaquin Phoenix-à-la-i’m Still Here personality.

Read at your own risk! There be spoilers ahead, matey. "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" cameo spoilers, to be specific.
This particular cameo has been out there already, but, what's new here is that director/co-writer Adam McKay has unleashed a bunch of details.
You've been warned.
Remember those photos of Kanye West that surfaced from the "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" set? Well, McKay recently had plenty to say about the participation of the rapper-turned-actor who is of course baby daddy to Kim Kardashian, bully to Taylor Swift, performance artist on "SNL" and the man The President of the United States twice referred to as a "jackass."
There was no jackassery on display on the Atlanta set of the hotly anticipated Will Ferrell comedy sequel, however.
We already know that West will be choking Steve Carrell with a hockey stick during a big brawl. Now we know what a nice and happy guy he can be.

Despite Kanye West’s, ahem, behavioral issues, I find him to be strangely compelling. And though after a year of debate about the Video Music Awards debacle with Taylor Swift has turned me immune to any “news” about the rapper, he can still occasionally catch my eye. Maybe I’m a sucker for West’s former collaboration with Spike Jonze, the bizarre and haunting short, We Were Once A Fairytale, but I don’t so much mind a cinematic West.

The well-connected director is very good at getting his own way, hence his family unfriendly take on kids' classic, Where The Wild Things Are
Ten years after Being John Malkovich, there are still few people's heads you'd pay to spend 15 minutes inside as much as Spike Jonze's. It would be easy to imagine life from his perspective as a continual flow of way-cool experiences: "Here I am dashing off another era-defining music video. Here I am hanging out with Karen O/Kanye/Mia/the Coppolas. Oh look, I've got another bunch of Oscar nominations. I think I'll pop into Vice magazine and do some cool shit. Now I'm just scrolling through the contacts on my iPhone and thinking how phenomenally well-connected I am." That's the movie version, but real life hasn't been quite so straightforward for Jonze of late. Over the past five years, a random visit to Jonze's...

The Guidelines: random notes from pop culture
There are copious strings to 50 Cent's platinum bow. As well as being a rapper, self-help guru and inspiration to many, he's an actor and videogame voiceover artiste. Recently added to that list is "short film auteur". Before I Self Destruct is a semi-autobiographical tale of murder and revenge – with added lesbian sex scenes – which will be included with Fiddy's forthcoming album of the same name, creating a whole new genre: straight to CD. Here's how to make your own ...

There comes a point in the career trajectory of major pop stars when the people employed to say "no" to things become surplus to requirements. Without them, ill-advised concept albums are recorded, strange product endorsements are accepted, or, in extreme cases, diamond-encrusted necklaces shaped like a weeping Virgin Mary are worn to display your love of religion. It's at this...
