With nearly 200 horror films on Netflix at any given moment, there’s never a shortage of great films to induce paralytic fear. As a true fan of the macabre, that’s what you want, right? As Stephen King refers to a member of his unparalleled fandom, the Constant Reader craves that jolt to the soul.
Happily, Netlifx is delighted to scare you to your very core, night after sleepless night. I’m certain they’d like nothing better than to see you as their Constant Viewer. My apologies to Mr. King, but he cribs a lot himself, as he’s more than happy to acknowledge. Of course, when King borrows, it typically results in a towering achievement. Clowns were always scary but were never as terrifying until Pennywise entered the culture.
It is not in the following group of films. A property grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide didn’t exactly fly under the radar.

By and large, the 2010s proved to be a superb decade for the horror genre. Following in the footsteps of some of the finest horror movies of all time, the decade played host to a number of standout offerings from one of cinema's oldest genres. The best horror movies of the 2010s featured the likes of The Witch, Get Out, and A Quiet Place to name but a few, while introducing new directorial genre standouts like Jordan Peele and Robert Eggers to a global audience.
However, while the headlines may have been dominated by the likes of the aforementioned big hitters, the horror genre also played host to a number of lesser-known and more underappreciated outings. These films may not have been accompanied by the same mainstream fanfare as some of their more popular contemporaries, but the best obscure horror movies from the 2010s feature a wide range of compelling central premises and characters,...

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.
As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). He's also still in mourning over the death of his wife years before, which was the primary impetus driving Rob to become a recluse. More than anything,...

Psychedelic horror movies stand out as visual feasts that craft engaging, unique tales. Mandy, Beyond the Black Rainbow, and Suspiria shine as psychedelic horror masterpieces. Films like Annihilation and Hausu push the boundaries of psychedelic horror with stunning visuals and terrifying narratives.
Psychedelic horror movies are a niche, but incredibly satisfying type of scary movie, with the best examples being terrifying visual feasts. Of all the horror subgenres, psychedelic horror doesn't get enough credit as being some of the best around, crafting engaging tales that are uniquely suited to the medium of film. Psychedelic horror refers to horror films with far-out, fantastical visuals, nightmarish blurs between the real and conceptual, or esoteric plots that eschew traditional storytelling.
The best psychedelic horror movies lean into all these aspects while still crafting a well-produced and skillfully realized film. Some rely on the nonsensical natures of their unorthodox narratives to illicit the uneasy...

The wait for new Panos Cosmatos features requires patience. Some 13 years since the premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow has only brought 2018’s Mandy and a 2022 episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Though word’s been quiet on his A24-backed feature Nekrokosm, the next big push might be here: with a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and producing credit from Adam McKay, Cosmatos has enlisted Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac for vampire picture Flesh of the Gods. [THR]
Flesh of the Gods––deriving from a story penned by Walker and Cosmatos––concerns Raoul and Alex, a wealthy married couple who trawl “an electric nighttime realm of 80’s LA” and find themselves meeting a “mysterious and enigmatic woman and her hard-partying cabal.” Thus ensues “a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence”––on the basis of Cosmatos’ CV, likely filled with ominous synthesizer tunes and the harshest...

The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

Complicated sci-fi movies push the boundaries of scientific possibility and introduce new concepts for film exploration. Many important sci-fi movies are difficult to understand, but they continue to evolve the genre through unorthodox approaches. Complex sci-fi movies examine humanity from unique perspectives, often hiding human elements beneath layers of groundbreaking scientific ideas.
Complicated sci-fi movies that went too far live rent-free in viewers' minds long after the first viewing. In their attempts to make the next big groundbreaking science fiction blockbuster, filmmakers sift through the very fringes of scientific possibility. "This world has been morally corrupted by divinity. We're saving you from making it so much worse." Utopia, Sumerian and executive producer Steven Soderbergh present Divinity, a film from writer-director-producer Eddie Alcazar (his second feature after the experimental Perfect previously). This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the Next section, and is set for an art house run this fall starting in October. Two mysterious brothers abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality. Meanwhile, a seductive woman helps them launch into a journey of self-discovery. This stars Stephen Dorff, Moises Arias, Jason Genao, Karrueche Tran, Bella Thorne, and Scott Bakula. Sundance also adds: Alcazar "dazzles with this uncompromising vision that pushes a retro sci-fi styling forward to a stunning and grotesque future. Alcazar leads a skilled team of creative collaborators to construct this world, and together they conjure a boldly lit black and white wonder...

Legion M founders express their interest in expanding the universe of the superhero movie Archenemy, with conversations with writer/director Adam Egypt Mortimer suggesting potential ideas for a follow-up. Despite challenges with the timing of its release during Covid, Archenemy is seen as a fun universe with a colorful cast of characters, leaving hope for future projects like a comic book or graphic novel. Joe Manganiello's performance in Archenemy showcases his potential as a superhero franchise lead, making a sequel a perfect opportunity to revive his involvement in the comic book/superhero genre.
With the director having previously teased ideas for more, Legion M founders Paul Scanlan and Jeff Annison address the chances of an Archenemy 2. Joe Manganiello led the cast of the 2020 superhero thriller as Max Fist, a man wandering the streets of Los Angeles who claims to come from another dimension, but lost his powers upon arriving on Earth,...

Movies like Ex Machina appeal equally to fans of science fiction and horror. The film's blend of thought-provoking concepts and intense drama is certainly a cocktail that many genre movies have attempted to make before but few have succeeded quite as well. Garland went on to direct an even more ambitious and accomplished science-fiction film, Annihilation, and the more intensely horrific film Men, however the best movies like Ex Machina are the ones that capture that same concentrated burst of high-concept ideas within the framework of an intimate thriller.
Sci-fi horror, though highly entertaining when it's done right, isn't the easiest subgenre to navigate without a guide. There are a number of interesting and popular science fiction movies that revolve around rogue AI, for example. These range from classic science fiction movies like Westworld to films with a more directly comedic angle like M3GAN. However, to find movies that are truly similar to Ex Machina,...

One only gets word on a new Panos Cosmatos film so often—might as well appreciate it as it comes. Though the director, who we’ve admired since Beyond the Black Rainbow shocked us a decade ago, recently set an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix anthology Cabinet of Curiosities, the four years since Mandy have been quiet. We’re accordingly thrilled he’s set Nekrokosm, a “phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare” backed by A24 and XYZ Films, with Maegan Houang scripting from an idea devised by her and the director.
However tight a lid’s kept, the stamp left by Black Rainbow and Mandy makes it easy to align initial description—that it’s “set deep within a strange galaxy where two lovers are torn apart as they try to survive a malevolent invasion”—with what may follow. Cosmatos’ visual sense could perhaps be described as a moving Omni cover,...

With Color Out of Space, The Void, Annihilation, and Lovecraft Country coming out over the last several years, cosmic horror is one of the genre’s popular new trends. Popularized by H.P. Lovecraft’s writings in the early 20th century, cosmic horror works nicely for literature but remains untapped in film due to its inherent, indescribable nature. It’s a challenge many filmmakers have taken a crack at but only a few have really made work.
Writer/director Matthew Wade is the latest person to give the great, terrifying unknown a shot with his film A Black Rift Begins to Yawn, whose title comes directly from one of Lovecraft’s novellas. To Wade’s credit, his approach tackles cosmic horror differently than the previously mentioned examples; all emphasis is put on the ethereal, engaging with ideas of perception and time on purely abstract terms instead of making things literal. A body-penetrating, mind-controlling horror-thriller that exists somewhere between Scanners, Beyond The Black Rainbow, and Upgrade, Possessor is the second feature film by visionary writer-director Brandon Cronenberg, son of David and Carolyn. The Toronto native made his original debut with 2012's Antiviral, about a tech company that sells celebrity illnesses to obsessed fans. With the same gruesome verve as his father David — one of the originators of the body horror subgenre to begin with — Cronenberg's work often explores body modification, infection, technology, and interweaving of the psychological with the physical. With Possessor, he digs even deeper into the "new flesh" to tell a story about identity in this digital age. Andrea Riseborough stars in Cronenberg's Possessor as Tasya Vos, an elite corporate assassin who uses brain-implant technology to hijack the bodies of others to execute high-profile targets. After each mission, Tasya awakens in her own body and must undergo evaluation from her handler,...

Busting out of the gate at Sundance this past January, Panos Cosmatos' Mandy, starring Nicolas Cage, drew huge attention, especially, I suspect, from those who had disregarded Beyond the Black Rainbow, which was gorgeous and haunting in both spirit and visuals. And the passage of some eight years may have lowered expectations as well. In its simplest terms, Mandy is a tale of horrible, well-deserved revenge wrought by the character embodied by Cage. Under the raw yet elegant direction of Cosmatos, working from a script he concocted with Aaron Stewart-Ahn and bolstered by the less-heralded Andrea Riseborough, the film becomes a reckless fever dream. In his review for Screen Anarchy, Noel Lawrence noted: "Mandy may prove divisive; some people will have trouble processing a genre...

In “Mandy,” Nicolas Cage goes on a wild-eyed quest for revenge, but the movie’s plot comes secondary to the experience of watching it. Director Panos Cosmatos’ follow-up to his similarly atmospheric “Beyond the Black Rainbow” is a heavy metal tone poem, replete with leather jackets, shadowy landscapes, and unfiltered bursts of rage. Much of its expressionistic power comes from an undercurrent of music that envelops nearly every moment, evoking dread and wonder in equal doses.
The “Mandy” score is one of the best of the year, a fierce emotional arrangement of mournful synth and somber guitars, interspersed with jarring eruptions of percussion — all of which demonstrate the complex vision of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who died in February at the age of 48, shortly after “Mandy” premiered at Sundance.

Back in October, the fifth issue in the comiXology Originals series Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty was released online, and it marked the 50th Elephantmen cover by artist Boo Cook. To celebrate the milestone, Daily Dead was recently provided with a Q&A with Cook for our readers to enjoy. In his wide-spanning reflection on his work, Cook discusses the creative approach to his artwork, collaborating with writer Richard Starkings, and he selects his five favorite covers that he's done for the Elephantmen series.
"Boo, you've been the cover artist on Elephantmen for 50 issues now. What's that mean to you, having such consistency with a series?
Boo Cook: In all honesty, I was quite surprised to discover I’d notched up 50 covers for Elephantmen! Life as a freelancer is kind of a blur plunging from one job to the next, radically changing tack with each new cover or strip,...

Nicolas Cage has been cranking out straight-to-vod movies for ages, but “Mandy” broke that mold. The wild, heavy metal-inspired revenge saga screened in a handful of theaters when it came out on VOD in September, but the enthusiasm for director Panos Cosmatos’ eerie, haunting cult phenomenon turned it into a theatrical phenomenon. While it was released in accordance with a traditional day-and-date strategy, distributor Rlj Entertainment noticed a massive uptick in demand for the film, and the movie continues to expand to theaters across the country.
For Cosmatos, who spent eight years working on his follow-up to his similarly psychedelic breakout “Beyond the Black Rainbow,” the enthusiasm has extended far beyond his expectations. “This is very surprising to me,” he said in a phone interview. “I suspected the movie would find an audience, but that it would be a lot smaller.”

If a coked-up Nicolas Cage hunting devil-worshipping gimp demons with a self-forged battle-axe in an intergalactic fantasy realm, circa 1983, doesn’t exactly sound like your cup o’ tea, it might prove best to stop reading here.
Panos Cosmatos’s die-hard cult shock-er-piece has already caused an absolute firestorm overseas at both Sundance and Cannes, and for good reason. Yes, it sees the Cage himself at his most “groovy”, cementing the more DVD-friendly fanbase he’s grown more recently, but it’s also a seriously delectable bit of big-screen pulp trash too. A stylish revenge fable that’s not-so-much neon drenched as it is neon-born; a throwback that’s thrown so far back it’s an entirely separate animal from the recent 80s-wave.
For those unfamiliar with Cosmatos’s prior work (the hideously under-appreciated gem Beyond the Black Rainbow), he’s a big fan of both bright colours, and a mood-heavy,...

On screen, the revenge film Mandy is a ferocious fever-dream, but off screen it has been a game-changing success story for SpectreVision, the production company founded by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller. The film has won over critics and a growing fan following since its January premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and Wood now tells Deadline his company is sizing up an Oscar campaign for star Nicolas Cage.
“This is absolutely the most successful film and best-reviewed film we’ve made since we started this company eight years ago to focus on genre and horror films and to push the boundaries of what one considers those things to be,” said Wood, best known as the actor who portrayed the intrepid hobbit Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings films.

Director: Panos Cosmatos. Writers: Panos Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn. Cast: Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Ned Dennehy, Bill Duke and Olwen Fouéré. Eight years have passed since Panos Cosmatos brought Beyond the Black Rainbow to screens. This feature was a psychedelic mind trip, set in the '80s and in an illicit laboratory; a very unforgettable film. Cosmatos' latest, Mandy, is similarly hallucinogenic. Lens flares streak the screen and dialogue often sounds like an auditory hallucination. What can only be called a psychedelic revenge thriller, Mandy is a film that is also very memorable as Red (Nicholas Cage) looks for revenge, after the death of his wife (Andrea Riseborough). Other horror films influence the screen, even though Cosmatos was forbidden to watch them as a child. The lighting is equally unsettling. It is amazing that so many colours can fit on the screen, at the same time. As well,...

In “Mandy,” Nicolas Cage sits at the center of a hypnotic cinematic experience that’s equal parts deranged revenge story and abstract study of grief. Director Panos Cosmatos’ follow-up to “Beyond the Black Rainbow” stars Cage as Red Miller, who lives an isolated existence in the wilderness until the demented cult leader Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache) shows up and destroys Red’s life. The second half of the movie finds Cage taking on Red and his goons with a series of weapons — an ax and a chainsaw both get their due — while delivering a wild, kooky performance that ranks as one of his most memorable in ages.
Cage knows that most people will lump “Mandy” in with any number of the extreme, genre-based roles that he’s tackled over the years, but has long felt that these decisions reflect a cogent philosophy. In the following interview, he explained his frustrations...

“Mandy,” which opens Sept. 14, features the final film score by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson, who died Feb. 9 in Berlin at the age of 48. Described in a Variety review as a “hallucinogenic mashup of Satanic-cult horror and revenge thriller [with] Nicolas Cage in full gonzo mode,” Panos Cosmatos’ film plays Johannsson’s music loud and upfront throughout.
“I wanted the film to have a rock-opera feel,” Cosmatos tells Variety. “I wanted it to be an audio-visual experience, like Ken Russell’s ‘Tommy,’ something like that.”
Cosmatos originally thought that the two-time Oscar-nominated composer was “out of our reach,” but after a phone conversation with the composer discovered, “beyond his very beautiful, ethereal, mood-based soundscapes, he’d grown up a metal-head.” That, coupled with Johannsson’s professed admiration of Cosmatos’ earlier film “Beyond the Black Rainbow,” sealed the deal.

Half revenge thriller, half trippy mural on the side of a van, Panos Cosmatos’ “Mandy” is the kind of pretentious horror thriller that will drive some folks crazy and others into throes of ecstasy. It’s a deliberately paced, ultraviolent, outlandishly stylish delivery system for Nicolas Cage’s wild-eyed acting style, and a thoughtful meditation about why Death Metal totally rules.
Cage stars as Red Miller, a logger and heavy-metal enthusiast who lives with a fantasy artist named Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). Their lives are peaceful, filled with dreamy glances over vast horizons, watching cheesy sci-fi movies on television and reading pulp fantasy novels at work.
Into their lives drives the Children of the New Dawn, a cult led by Jeremiah Sand, who drive past Mandy on her way to work. Jeremiah decides that since all the fruits of this world are his for the taking — and they are — then he must have Mandy,...

In the final part of Panos Cosmatos' first film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, there is a sequence that presents a quintessential scenario of horror films: two long-haired friends listen to heavy metal music in the middle of nowhere, while they talk, drink beer and smoke, before being violently murdered by the main antagonist. This scene does not saturate the screen of a specific color -- the color palette includes a lot of red, in addition to high-contrast black and white in the iconic flashback to the sixties -- and it almost does not use the synth and progressive score by Jeremy Schmidt, thus contrasting with the general psychedelic and dreamlike feel of the film. In Mandy, his second feature film, Cosmatos continues with his already...

Beyond the Black Rainbow, the first feature from director Panos Cosmatos, quickly established the Italian-Canadian as a name to remember. With his follow-up Mandy, Cosmatos raises the bar. Anchored by a central performance from Nicolas Cage that is equal parts tender and furious, Mandy doubles down on Costmatos’ firm commitment to tone, while strengthening the emotional foundation amidst the swirl of colors and mayhem. Oozing like a dream that goes south, Mandy is a hallucinogenic vision of vengeance.
