When Fedor Losev finds the body of his friend Viktor Kamorin on the floor of their photo studio, suspicion falls on him.

An unseen intruder attacks Fedor in the photo studio. During the fight, three of the intruder's fingers are severed in a paper cutter. The intruder escapes, but Fedor later recognizes a distinctive tattoo on one of the severed fingers.

Professor Lobnik, an optical physicist, tells Fedor about a device that he had been developing with Viktor, a device that can duplicate anything.

Fedor learns the truth about Viktor, and about himself and Lena.
