Back in the 70s and 80s, films like Sunray: Fallen Soldier were a staple of action cinema. Soldiers returning from Vietnam found their neighbourhood or small town overrun by criminals and had to put their combat training to use on the home front. As is the case here, it often had a personal element, such as the family business being threatened or a child overdosing.
The latter was, and continues to be, a common theme in revenge films, even without the military aspect. Of course in these films, nobody ever suggests that maybe if the protagonist had been a better parent they wouldn’t need to be seeking revenge, but that’s another matter.

Directed by James Clarke and Daniel Shepherd, both of whom have previously collaborated on the acclaimed short, Letters Home, which focused on the human cost of warfare, Sunray: Fallen Soldier is yet another narrative that offers a sympathetic look at the lives ravaged by the dreaded realities of war. Primarily unfolding as a revenge action thriller as an aging military veteran and his trusted team of elite combatants take on drug dealers and gangsters to avenge the death of someone dear, Sunray: Fallen Soldier tries to highlight the painful predicament of lives marred by violence and isolation. The inability to find closure can spell doom for those who struggle to find a soul to share their emotional burden—the core message the movie conveys well, but a contrived ending somewhat affects the narrative treatment as a whole.

Through shadowed streets of an uncaring modern world, “Sunray: Fallen Soldier” weaves a story that resonates with raw loss and relentless pursuit of justice. Andy Coleman, a lean ex-Marine, becomes trapped in desperate circumstances after his daughter Rachel’s fatal overdose.
This devastating event leads him down a path stained with symbolic blood and shifting morality, where good and wrong merge like shadows spreading across a battle-scarred wasteland. The setting magnifies this philosophical exploration—a stark space where inner turmoil takes physical form through conflict.
The film begins with dark undertones, setting the stage for Andy’s personal storm. The drug raid echoes themes of destruction, reflecting patterns of destiny. The movie stakes its ground—presenting a world marked by violence, redemption shimmering like a ghost, eternal and unreachable.

Stars: Meg Fozzard, Shian Denovan, Tom Knight, Ray Bullock Jr., Gala Wesson, Daniel Davids | Written by Christopher Presswell, Forgács W. András | Directed by Christopher Presswell
The Whip opens with Emily (Meg Fozzard), who suffers from a brain injury, and her sister Sadie who cares for her full time, suffering through a benefits interview. And I do mean suffering as the interviewer, somewhere between disinterested and outright hostile, gets Emily’s name wrong and asks if she has mobility issues as she sits there in her wheelchair. Despite a host of issues stemming from her injury, including short-term memory issues, shaky balance confining her to a wheelchair, and hands that shake, she’s deemed fit for work. A forgone conclusion given the government’s “Putting Ability Back into Disability” slogan for revamping the National Health Service.
Elsewhere, Michael Harrington is trying to sell these new policies to voters, and they are not buying it.
