Screened opposite Des on BBC1 was Ronnie Barker - a Life in Comedy (1997), which attracted 13.22 million viewers. (Brookside (1982) on Channel 4 also picked up an audience of 4.36 million.)

Such competition had a disastrous effect on Des's viewing figures, causing his show to fall out of the Top 70 Chart. As the following week's episode noted a 36.1% increase in viewership, this would place the depleted audience for this edition down to between 6.18-6.19 million.
