Different Developers, sale publisher. So YES the game is different. Compare it to Mass Effect. Play as one character and control others thru commands. Simple right? Somewhat.
Mechanics are alright. Moderate Auto Aim, overheating on blasters, quick reflexes and of course which character to use for what enemy. Now all of them have a weakness which the tutorial will show you how. Downside was the jet boots. Only got for short jumps? Lame.
Graphics... HOLY S*it!!! PS4/PS5/XBox... who cares?! Take a minute and just admire how much damn work these people put in to make this ascetically pleasing, visually captivating. Granted it's no Marvel movie but you get a moment to really enjoy the work. The detail is pretty massive.
The characters themselves are all motion capture which you'll notice, nothing spectacular but what you do notice is the dialogue between all the characters. Just the normal back and forth between traveling. Especially Drax. He's more witty and somewhat intelligent.
Soundtrack. It's GoTG. Do I need to say more?
Just know the runthrough is anywhere between 18-25 hrs. Yes the decisions affect some parts of the game so choose wisely. But overall. It's comedic, upbeat, just single player fun. No BS. Just fun.

I was skeptical at first (like I think most people were) because of the disaster caused by the Avengers game. I didn't think Avengers was entirely garbage but once you did the story lines there really isn't anything worth doing. This game however is completely different a huge huge improvement. For starters there are no microtransaction. It's single player only and you can only play Star Lord. I'm only about 3 hours into the game so far but the story is great, it's funny, gameplay is pretty different from anything I've played but still fun once you figure it out. I'd say the biggest flaw is not being able to play any of the other Guardians but even that isn't bad. It would be nice but not a huge deal.
Overall pretty solid game. I would definitely recommend it and say not to be worried after everything Avengers game related.

I am really pleasantly surprised with this game.
When I first saw the trailer, I, like many people, was not convinced. I think it was the scars from Square Enix's frankly awful Avengers game that made me less than excited for this release. But since seeing some more gameplay on IGN I thought I'd give it a shot... and I'm glad I did. This is a really fun, straight from a comic kind of game. And also.... really quite funny and well written. The colours and themes are beautiful and the game has a lot of heart. Gameplay can be a bit lacking in places (you can only play as Star Lord for starters), but overall significantly better than I thought it would be. We should encourage devs to make single player story games more often, so please do buy this one- you won't regret it.

I was skeptical going in because of how disappointing The Avengers game was but GOTG is a lot of fun. The characters are all done well and have funny dialogue between each other. The story is interesting and keeps you invested. The gameplay is great and combat sequences are a blast. The cooperative element with the team puts it over the top. The game is also visually appealing and looks fantastic. Ready for some DLC. Great game and definitely worth your time.
As far as a story goes, this competes with if not surpasses James Gunn's movies. Voice acting is stellar and the facial animations are nearly flawless. The characters are thoroughly sympathic.
Excellent game. I really hope it does well to encourage more games of this quality.

After the Avengers game Square Enix had to pull one out out the bag with this one to save face. Well I personally think this is a corker of a game. Been a fan of both the comics and the moves is was so happy to see all the references to characters an event that have taken place, the history is based more of the comics and dose a good job of giving info of the individual guardians back stories with collectibles to fine during the storie. The designs of the characters of familiar different and don't look quite so jarring as the faces in avengers which in my opinion still need changing.

Underrated Gem - One of the Best Superhero Games
This game blew me away! I am honestly really sad that it did poorly financially because that means we probably will never get a sequel.
Here are the positives:
Negatives
This game blew me away! I am honestly really sad that it did poorly financially because that means we probably will never get a sequel.
Here are the positives:
- The graphics are truly next-gen. The game looks incredible.
- The story is super fun with lots of twists and turns. It is incredibly well paced. Expect 15-20 hours.
- Great achievement design. You can get them all in one play through if you are intentional with collectibles (which are not excessive).
- The combat is very fun. You play as Star Lord but command the whole team with special abilities and group combos. It is very satisfying and fun. Ability progression is perfectly balanced throughout the game. Love the combat!
- Movement feels great.
- The villain is awesome and very comic book accurate!
- The cast is easily the best part. You will love this version of the guardians. There is a ton of heart and growth amongst each member throughout the game and their ability progression is tied to them overcoming past struggles. Really well done in the character department.
- This game is also hilarious. I love funny games (Sunset Overdrive and High on Life for example). I consistently laughed through the whole game. Great writing.
Negatives
- The end drags on for a laugh or two and it hurts the pacing of a otherwise great final fight.
- The puzzle design is just fine.

Not only one of the best Marvel games in awhile but also just a damn good game in general. Controlling your teammates is a little annoying but I don't know how they could of done it any better. Definitely worth picking up and hopefully DLC is coming soon.

The story, characters and soundtrack are amazing. I love the characters even more than the movie-version though i love the movies too. I was so invested in the story and the characters. It's worth every penny.

Just too many bugs! Like cyberpunk; the gameplay and story are great! But it's let down by crashing and freezing that brings me back to reality and totally out of the experience...

Like most people reviewing here I was very skeptical about this game because of The Avengers game. I didn't even make it 3 hours into that game before I stopped playing and never touched it again. This game however, the first night I played it for about 6 hours and didn't notice it had been that long, I lost track of time with this game. Reminds of me when I was a kid and I would constantly be thinking about going home to continue playing the game because it was so fun and that's what I'm thinking about the entire time I'm at work. The game genuinely gave me a Guardians vibe, with the music playing in the background during combat and the way the team just speaks and interacts with each other, the ridiculous messes they get in and the ridiculous way they each have their own solutions to it was very much like the Guardians. Arguments felt genuine to their characters and not out of the blue. The way the characters look, when I saw the trailers and I told myself I hated it. I thought they messed it up just like The Avengers but when I started playing my first thought wasn't, "it's not that bad", it was "wow it actually looks really good". I love their character designs. I only have one thing that I don't like and it's that the characters can be stiff during cutscenes or dialogue sometimes and the animation just looks a bit awkward but this didn't degrade my enjoyment of the game at all, still a 10/10 for me. I can honestly say this game is pretty close to perfect for me.

Brilliant soundtrack, engaging and comedy gold. A vast contrast to Marvel Avengers. This game has heart and the fighting mechanics are easy to get to grips with.
Definitely recommend!

What a game. I had absolutely no interest during the run up as the trailers didn't make it look like much, (and the Avengers game went down as one of those epic gaming disasters). But every minute of this game was just pure fun.
I've never played a game where the characters just banter constantly every minute that you play! I'm sure there was never more than 30 seconds where there wasn't dialogue, even when you're just making your way through the levels. And the dialogue/writing is exceptional, I laughed out loud a whole bunch of times.
If you're into games for their stories and love you some comic book action then you just can't get better than this. The narrative is top tier, best I've seen in a comic book game. This version of the Guardians are actually more likeable than their movie counterparts too, imo. And I say that as a huge fan.
Graphics are gorgeous, really detailed, imaginative environments and the facial animation is some of the best I've ever seen in real time gameplay. It really helps to sell the performances and the humour.
Definitely don't sleep on this one. One of the most entertaining games I've ever played. Just stole GOTY for me.

If you like Guardians of the galaxy then play this game. Do not go into this game looking for it to be the avengers game because it isn't. I feel that the story was well done and the cast of characters was even better. It took me a minute to get used to the voice actors but after I did I feel that they did a really really good job. I did run into a few glitches here and there but nothing major nothing that took away from the fun that I was having. I definitely hope that there is a sequel. If you like this type of game and you like The Guardians of the galaxy then you definitely should check it out !!
I almost forgot I want to add there was nothing extra that you needed to buy no DLC nothing. When you purchase the game you get it all which is very rare these days!!

I'd give it a ten but the game is a bit messy. In reality, I'd give it about an 8.5 but I am rounding it up to a 9 for charm.
Story- Guardians of the Galaxy The Game is a fantastic adventure that makes it feel like you're watching a 30 hour long Marvel movie. Every voice actor killed it and it was a thrill from beginning to end. The biggest gripe I have is losing some of the jokes and deep plot points to interruptions from other characters.
Combat- It's not the worst, not the greatest. You play exactly how Starlord should play in a video game- providing almost nothing to the team in terms of battle. Instead, you must rely on staying elusive and setting up your stronger team members for massive damage. This combat system works, but it leaves a lot to be desired. When your teammates are on cool down, you realize how bad the combat can be.
Replayability- Game is replayable a time or two. The game offers choices that will change the story slightly. It will leave you dreaming about "What if?" when it came to the other options. Most likely you will play it a second time just to collect some costumes and see a dozen or so scenes that you wish you picked the other option for.
The issues- The biggest issue I have with this game is the interruption. They recorded thousands of hours of dialogue and wanted to make sure it was all inside their game. Countless times I've been dying to here the rest of what someone was trying to say but it was either interrupted by another character or I was forced to make a choice.
There are a lot of times in combat where things get a little too hectic. Heroes and villains flying around the level, falling into unreachable places, and teleporting to make sure they can land their blow. It was really annoying to see the final blow drop-kick animation of Peter Quill miss by ten feet, but the monster still reacts. There is a lot of missed connections in this game.
Lastly, the game was also notorious for going into "combat" mode and never leaving it. About 6 times through the game, my characters would enter diplomatic situations with all of their weapons drawn and I'd be like "Wait what? Is this part of the story?" I didn't realize it was a bug until Drax crossed his arms and put both of his knives into his chest mid-conversation. The bug would remain until you fully reset the game.
If I could sum up this game in as few words as possible, I would say that it normally wouldn't be worth buying but this title absolutely floats on it's own charisma. The amount of charm stuffed into this game makes it almost impossible not to forgive its failings.

+ really really cool dialogue!
The good: + awesome soundtrack + Good atmosphere + The chemistry of the team is awesome. Feels like playing a guardians movie + Nice humor + Story is ok + You get to know each character better which is cool
The bad:

The bad:
- okay grafics but not great
- save points are strange, if you die you often have to see cutscenes all over again
- often the gameplay is just all over the place, you can hardly figure out whats going on
- why can you just play starlord, he has the most boring abilities of the team, why can't you switch between the characters?
- i don't like the pathfinding / level design. I often got lost in a "non open world"!
- who still thinks that quick time events are a good gameplay idea? It jist s***! Also the dialogue quick time events s***!
- the "exploring and running/jumping" parts between the fight are just not fun. I didn't want to explore at all
- Often you have to use the visor and everything looks terrible with the visor
- for the puzzles I often needed mr google
- many game elements like exploring, climbing,... You saw better in other adventures before (tomb raider,. Last of us..)

I'm not fan of Marvel. Their movies are bland and generic. And despite James Gunn giving a new style and tone to the guardians, i didn't care. The guardians movies are too dumb and you can't take anything serious enough to care.
I had zero interest to play this game until I started seeing great reviews. I was so happy with this game. It has everything that I wanted. It feels familiar but different in a better way to the movies. In my opinion, this game is better as a story than the movies. Is full of heart and the characters are amazing. So in love with the game.

The game has a great story, charismatic characters, but the gameplay is regular and very bugs.
How Game works: -Great Story, but could have more classic Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy villains -Gameplay with lot of Bugs, the skills of guardians is cool but have moments of bored -Moments with too many villains(bored) -Metroidvania system is work but have places with bugs and repetitive -skins of characters is great -performaces is regular -the desing guardians is good -comedy,action and 80s classic songs(similar Guardian of the galaxy 2014 movie)

What an incredible piece of crap. I wouldn't have believed it was Square Enix. This retro game feel crap from lazy developers out to make quick $$$ has got to go. It's a shooter with an average plot and repetitive silly puzzles. The voice acting was great. But that's it. You guys follow up Lara Croft with a cartoon game for ages 12 and under? Wow how the mighty have fallen. Or in this case sold out.

After over a year owning the series X Xbox and still waiting for for a PS5 I was starting to get worried about this next gen thing. No game in the last 12 months has been a serious contender to be called or even showcase what this new generation can do. Until now sure you can play this on your Xbox one but you get a real snippet of what wonders are to come when playing in series X. This game would have been just as good without the GOTG it just is a true Marvel to play from start to finish.
