Exclusive: Peacock has scored another drama project from Julie Plec and her Vampire Academy co-exec producer Adam Starks as its development strategy kicks into second gear.
The NBCU streamer is developing Freeman, a mystery drama series set in a small, picturesque town in Georgia, from Plec and Starks. Peacock is understood to have won the project in a highly competitive battle and has set up a mini writers’ room.
Freeman comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Plec is under an overall deal.
It follows a family, which moves to a small, picturesque town in Georgia after acquiring a lucrative inheritance, including the mysterious house known as Freeman Manor. It’s soon discovered that there are mysteries and darkness hidden within the walls, and the town at large, that go back generations.

Being able to tell when people are lying is different from a power I would want. White lies can be harmless, but some truths are devastating, and the repairs necessary to move on come at a high mental price. No, thank you. In Peacock‘s Poker Face trailer, Natasha Lyonne is Charlie Cale, a person who can see through people’s bullshit and extract truth no matter the circumstances. Created by Rian Johnson, Poker Face finds Charlie hitting the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and, with every stop, encountering a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.
As you can tell from the Poker Face trailer, the cast is jam-packed with seasoned players, including Adrien Brody, Angel Desai, Audrey Corsa, Benjamin Bratt, Brandon Michael Hall, Charles Melton, Chelsea Frei, Cherry Jones, Chloë Sevigny, Clea DuVall, Colton Ryan, Danielle MacDonald, Dascha Polanco, Ellen Barkin, Hong Chau,...

A new murder-mystery every episode on a weekly basis? What a concept!
Rian Johnson is currently enjoying an impossibly hot hand, turning everything he touches into gold (if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor) between his three-film run that includes "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," 2019's "Knives Out," and the highly-anticipated follow-up "Glass Onion." In all honesty, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that the Daniel Craig-starring Benoit Blanc franchise has singlehandedly invigorated audience interest in murder-mysteries in general. While the rest of the industry is still working on making up for lost time, Johnson continues to spearhead these efforts with yet another story ripped from the classic genre. This time, he's taking his talents from the big screen back to television -- which, lest we forget, is where he found such great success directing two of the most acclaimed episodes of "Breaking Bad."

Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale knows when people are lying, senses there has been a murder and is determined to find out what happened in Poker Face.
Peacock’s 10-part mystery series from Rian Johnson has dropped its full trailer, providing a 2 minute-plus look at the highly anticipated project from the Knives Out director and Russian Doll star. The official preview for Johnson’s TV debut — and streaming follow-up to Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery — follows up on the previously released teaser that first introduced Lyonne as the series’ scrappy protagonist.
Now, the trailer spends more time with “human lie detector” Charlie and provides glimpses at some of the A-list ensemble, a “rogue’s gallery of characters,” she will encounter along the way.
Billed as a mystery-of-the-week drama, the 10 hour-long episodes launch Jan. 26 with four episodes, followed by a weekly release on Thursdays.

Natasha Lyonne has an uncanny ability to tell when people are lying in the upcoming Peacock series, Poker Face.
The series hails from Knives Out and The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson. Throughout the 10-episode series, Lyonne’s Charlie shows off that preternatural ability by using it to solve crimes.
Among those crimes is a mysterious murder involving a host of characters, including Lil Rel Howery as a town sheriff who insists there was no foul play. In a new trailer released Thursday Lyonne explains “there’s nothing mystical” about her lie detecting abilities, adding: “I can just tell.”
After someone seeks her out to use her abilities (likely for nefarious purposes), Charlie goes on the run — but she continues to solve crimes along the way. The new trailer is linked below.

Daniel Craig plays Detective Benoit Blanc in the mystery films, with Grant making his debut as Blanc’s husband.
“It is true, I’m married to James Bond,” Grant told Collider about his role in the Netflix film. “It’s the tiniest little moment. I don’t really know why they wanted to do it but anyway, I thought ‘Knives Out 1’ was brilliant, and so yeah, I thought why not? I turn up for a few hours…”

We've just run down the best (and worst) of 2022. So, what's got us excited for 2023?
There is so much good TV waiting in the wings, not to mention some movies we've been aching to see.
Here's a list of everything we're excited about in the entertainment world.
Teen Wolf: The Movie (Paramount+)
MTV's biggest scripted hit returns with a movie, and we are so here for it.
Enemies were plentiful in Beacon Hills, and they're mounting once again, forcing Alpha Scott McCall to gather a trusted band of allies to ward off evil with their many respective (supernatural) talents.
What has us the most worried is Allison Argent's return from the dead, bow in hand, hunting the man she once loved.
This is going to be good, so plan on catching it on release day, January 26.

A Russian teen figure skater’s move-for-move re-creation of Jenna Ortega’s viral “Wednesday” dance at the 2023 Russian Figure Staking Championships is having a viral moment of its own.
Kamila Valieva‘s routine began with just the 16-year-old’s hand peeking out from the stands as Thing, then she climbed onto the ice clad in a frilled black dress like the one Wednesday Addams wore to a school dance in episode 4 of the Netflix series. She also copied Ortega’s braids, pale makeup and blank facial expression.
The opening moments were skated to Danny Elfman’s theme music for the show, and then switched to The Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck,” where Valieva channeled Ortega’s now iconic dance moves.

It's (another) Rian Johnson whodunnit! The news that Johnson was teaming up with Natasha Lyonne for a puzzle-of-the-week series for Peacock called "Poker Face" was exciting enough when we only had the success of his mysteries "Brick" and "Knives Out" to go off of, but after the hilarious delights of "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," Johnson may have carved himself a little niche as Hollywood's go-to director for stories of mystery and intrigue. "Poker Face" marks Johnson's return to the small screen, after having directed some all-time great episodes of "Breaking Bad," but this is his first project where he's got full creative control.
Lyonne plays an accidental detective named Charlie Cale, who has been gifted with the innate ability to tell if someone is lying. A sleuth with the ability to sniff out fibbing is one hell of an advantage in the line of duty but poses a...

Glass Onion, the sequel to Rian Johnson’s hit 2019 murder mystery film Knives Out, has finally arrived on Netflix.
Glass Onion has been warmly received by critics, with The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey describing it as “populist entertainment with its head screwed on right”.
It’s fair to say not everyone agrees, however.
The film sees Daniel Craig return as the ace sleuth Benoit Blanc, surrounded by a host of new characters played by Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline.
In addition to the core cast, however, Glass Onion also featured a number of high-profile celebrity cameos.
While most of these were hard to miss, there was one secret cameo that only came to light after the filmmakers gave it away.
Here’s a rundown of all the celebrity cameos in the film...

When you watch “Glass Onion,” Rian Johnson’s sequel to his popular whodunnit “Knives Out,” the title card reads just, well, “Glass Onion.” But in marketing materials, the film was given the subtitle “A Knives Out Mystery” to emphasize its connection to the 2019 box office smash. It’s a move that Johnson is not a fan of, as he revealed in an interview with The Atlantic.
“I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained,” Johnson said about the “Knives Out” films, which follow Daniel Craig’s dandy detective Benoit Blanc as he solves different complex mysteries with new casts of characters. “Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ in the title. You know? I want it to just be called ‘Glass Onion.’ I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the...

Rian Johnson landed a truly star-studded cast for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” — but there’s one celeb you might have missed!
Et’s Ash Crossan sat down with the director to discuss Daniel Craig’s latest foray as Detective Benoit Blanc, but also got all the scoop on the film’s “hourly dong” jingle, which was voiced by none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In the first year following its July 2020 launch, Peacock debuted comedies Saved By the Bell, Punky Brewster, Rutherford Falls and Girls5eva, along with drama Brave New World, which had been originally produced for USA Network.
None of these shows are still on the platform. And as the NBCUniversal streamer is headed into 2023 with the first full slate of originals developed by Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, and her team, it also is adjusting its development strategy for the next stage of its evolution, with a stronger emphasis on drama, led by eventized series, a focus on bingeable comedies as well as more true crime limited docu series and celebrity-driven shows on the unscripted side.

Hulu’s upcoming six-part limited docu-series “The 1619 Project” will launch Jan. 26, Disney’s Onyx Collective announced on Thursday. The series is an expansion of the project of the same name from journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and The New York Times Magazine.
Hosted by Hannah-Jones, “The 1619 Project” seeks to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative. The episodes — “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear” and “Justice” — are adapted from essays of Hannah-Jones “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story” and examine how the legacy of slavery shapes different aspects of contemporary American life.
“1619” is a Lionsgate Production in association with One Story Up Productions, Harpo Films and The New York Times. It was executive produced by Hannah-Jones, director Roger Ross Williams, editor Caitlin Roper, Kathleen Lingo, The New York Times’ editorial director for film and television and Oprah Winfrey.

Rian Johnson will be honored by Variety with the Creative Impact in Screenwriting Award at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival.
“The promise of Rian Johnson’s breakthrough neo-noir thriller ‘Brick’ was realized with Johnson’s wickedly smart sci-fi hit ‘Looper’ and breakthrough mainstream success followed with his joining the hallowed ‘Star Wars’ franchise team,” Steven Gaydos, Variety’s executive vice president of content, said in an announcement. “But it’s Johnson’s creation and direction of the sensational ‘Knives Out’ comic crime film series that makes him one of world cinema’s most elegantly accomplished cinema stylists and a worthy heir to Agatha Christie and all the other greats of the ‘whodunit’ genre.”
Johnson is currently promoting his new sequel, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” a follow-up to his 2019 breakout hit “Knives Out” that features the return of his leading man, Daniel Craig, as the Southern sleuth Benoit Blanc.

To call Damon Lindelof ambitious feels a bit like saying James Cameron has a soft spot for the ocean. Shows like "Lost," "The Leftovers," and "Watchmen" have seen the writer and producer wrestling with all manner of daunting topics, from America's legacy of white supremacy to the very meaning of existence and the effects of collective trauma. On the film side, Lindelof has even dared to try his hand at reinventing franchises as legendary as "Star Trek" and "Alien," with polarizing yet undeniably interesting results (to say nothing of his efforts on big swings like "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Tomorrowland").

Many great songs have won Record of the Year at the Grammys and gone on to become substantial classics. Songs like Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars‘s “Uptown Funk!,” Billie Eilish‘s “Bad Guy,” and Adele‘s “Rolling in the Deep” are still very much relevant in our culture today. However, I’d argue that one of the most underrated wins in recent years was that of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” which took home the important prize at the 2010 Grammys. “Use Somebody” was certainly not the biggest hit out of its class, which makes its victory even more impressive and interesting. So in a year with bona fide classics from The Black Eyed Peas, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga, how did the alt rock band manage to win?

Don’t let the #1 slot on iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu fool you: There’s lots more going on beyond “Black Adam” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99). In a landscape packed with franchise fare and Christmas contenders, “Bullet Train” (Sony/5.99) placed on all three charts and #1 as a new availability at Netflix.
The success of “Bullet Train” also speaks to the value of a film first enjoying a major theatrical presence. Its #1 slot Netflix comes after a 100 million+ domestic gross, followed by multiple weeks of VOD success. It replicates the platform’s immediate interest in Sony’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” which spent more than a week at #1 (and is still #10).

Lyonne directs an episode of the series and also executive produces the show, which features guest stars Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cherry Jones, Tim Meadows, Nick Nolte, Rhea Perlman, Ron Perlman, Jameela Jamil, Judith Light, Chloë Sevigny, Hong Chau, Lil Rey Howery, Stephanie Hsu, Tim Blake Nelson, Charles Melton, Luis Guzmán,...

“Black Adam” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99) swept the #1 positions on all VOD charts this week. The Dwayne Johnson-starring DC Comics hit (still #6 in theaters over the weekend) is the fall’s second 100 million+ domestic release to reach home availability. The other is “Smile” (Paramount/19.99). Now in its second week, it fell from #1 to #6 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), is #10 at Google Play, and not listed at all at iTunes (both calculate by transactions).
The difference: “Black Adam” is not streaming on HBO Max. “Smile” is on Paramount +.
We’ve seen some past releases thrive with that parallel play, but studios are beginning to realize the gold in the PVOD hills justifies delaying streaming for subscribers. Hit films boosts subscriptions, but they don’t offer the immediate rush of a lengthy VOD run. It also suggests consumers are beginning to catch on — how many people have rented a VOD...

Plot: Tech billionaire and gambler Jake Foley (Crowe) hosts a high-stakes poker game between childhood friends, offering them the chance to win more money than they’ve ever dreamed of. The evening takes a turn when he unveils his elaborate plan seeking revenge for their betrayals and to play, they’ll have to give up the one thing they’ve spent their lives trying to keep…their secrets. As the game unfolds, thieves break in and they must band together to survive a night of terror.
Review: Russell Crowe is a movie star. There is no question about the actor’s abilities on screen whether it be in marquee dramas like A Beautiful Mind, action epics like Gladiator, or period pieces like Cinderella Man. In recent years, Crowe has performed in projects that appeal to him ranging from pulpy flicks like Unhinged or superhero fare including Man of Steel and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Rian Johnson's next "Knives Out" mystery, "Glass Onion," is in theaters for just one week starting on November 23, and the 139-minute movie, as /Film's review of the film points out, is a bigger, funnier, and twistier whodunnit than Johnson's last foray into the genre.
Leading up to the movie's brief theatrical run, I talked with "Glass Onion" producer Ram Bergman, who shared that Johnson had the entire conceit of the movie laid out before he even wrote the script. We also talked about what it was like to shoot such a massive film with such a large ensemble cast in the middle of the pandemic, and also moved beyond "Knives Out" to talk about his next Rian Johnson collaboration: the mystery-of-the-week series on Peacock, "Poker Face," which stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman on the run who has an uncanny ability to tell when someone is lying.

Writer-director Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, his producing partner of two decades, are improbably modest for a pair who made one of the biggest film deals in recent memory — a 469 million two-picture pact with Netflix to have their T-Street production shingle make two sequels to their 2019 whodunit Knives Out.
It’s not just that the two got Netflix to loosen the purse strings; they’ve pushed the company beyond its well-established comfort zone. The streamer’s first Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, opens Nov. 23 in 600-plus theaters for a weeklong run before a Dec. 23 shift to digital. The film’s performance in both arenas will be a litmus test for how streamer-backed films may roll out in the future. Speaking over Zoom in early November, Johnson and Bergman seemed well aware of these stakes — though they also maintained that seismic industry shifts are not their priority.

Russell Crowe is telling the behind-the-scenes story about his new film.
The actor took over directing duties for “Poker Face” under the condition that he could do “whatever the f**k I want.”
“It tested my f***ing patience like you wouldn’t believe but art is never made in a perfect environment,” the 58-year-old told The Courier Mail.
Gary Fleder was originally slated to direct the film with a script by Stephen M. Coates, but has since been replaced by the actor.

It's never too surprising when filmmakers get big payouts for sequels, but when writer and director Rian Johnson purportedly got paid 100 million to direct two "Knives Out" sequels for Netflix, some folks were shocked. That's a pretty hefty payday, even if "Knives Out" was a surprise box office hit that cost around 40 million to make but grossed more than 300 million worldwide. In a new interview with The New Yorker, Johnson explained some of the reasoning behind that massive payout and why he decided to go with Netflix instead of one of the big traditional movie studios.
"Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" hits theaters nationwide on November 23, 2022, and will be headed to Netflix worldwide in December. Johnson's follow-up to the Agatha Christie-inspired "Knives Out" is a hilarious whodunnit that skewers pop culture while also serving as a great mystery (read our review!), so it wouldn't be too much of...
