Filmmaker Fanny Veliz talks about her film Homebound and the struggle to find a place in Hollywood.

Once upon a time, independent filmmaking consisted largely of unestablished filmmakers and actors who struggled to get their cinematic vision in front of the viewing public. Not any more. Today, independent filmmaking has been hijacked by A-list stars who use crowdfunding to raise millions for their movie. Even the Spirit Awards, originally founded to recognize independent filmmaking, are now obsessed with celebrities and films released by big-studio subsidiaries that enjoy mainstream success.

However, there are still true independent filmmakers out there, who still endure the challenges of filmmaking outside of the Hollywood machine. Filmmakers who offer something other than the usual mainstream fare. Filmmakers like Fanny Veliz.

Veliz is an actress whose filmography includes roles in the film Wassup Rockers and the TNT series Southland, but she found her calling behind the camera.

Update: Deadline says that Benjamin Bratt (Blood In, Blood Out, Miss Congeniality) has replaced Al Pacino as the villain Eduardo in Despicable Me 2.

Deadline reports that Al Pacino has exited Despicable Me 2, due to creative differences. The film is slated to be released July 3rd which would spell doom for any live-action film, however thanks to the flexibility of animation, a new actor can easily step in and replace Pacino.

Pacino was set to play the villain Eduardo in the film.

AnnaLynne McCord appeared to have forgotten to wear her pants on Tuesday, February 28. The former flame of Kellan Lutz was spotted walking down the streets of Santa Monica without her trousers while keeping herself warm in a dark-colored plaid coat.

During the morning outing, McCord donned a pair of furry winter boots and gray socks. The Anya depicter on "Blood Out", who's reportedly heading out to grab breakfast, was pictured holding an orange wallet while hiding her eyes behind sunglasses.

A day earlier on the set of "90210", McCord looked glamorous in a green one-shoulder dress with high-slit. The 24-year-old star completed her look with a horned necklace, a pair of earrings and sunglasses while wearing her blonde locks in a tight ponytail. She was seen carrying a black hooded jacket between takes of filming the TV series.

A woman at a club leaves after receiving a text message, bumping into another woman along the way. She's shot, (that was a woman's hand holding the gun so not much room for a slew of suspects). Patrick (Simon Baker) comments Lisbon (Robin Tunney) looks rested. Chief Henderson (Dean Norris) called for help. Patrick notices two shots were fired to her head. Her name is Yolanda (Natalia Costellanos) and she has a stamp on her wrist from Club Luxure. He also notices her polish was 'sloppily' applied... She was also wearing a sports bra with which Lisbon agrees. Patrick wonders why she was wearing a disguise, which was the key word for this episode, as will be revealed later. Henderson knew her, she was an undercover cop, working narcotics. Known as Yoli, her ID must be kept secret. Henderson leaves after insulting Patrick and telling Lisbon to keep the "circus act under control.

Oscar-nominated production designer Bruno Rubeo, who was a frequent collaborator with Taylor Hackford and Oliver Stone, died November 3rd in Trevi, Italy of complications from pneumonia. He was 65. According to his official bio, Rubeo was born in Rome and served in the Italian Navy before immigrating to Canada where he worked as an Art Director on several TV and independent film projects. His big break came in 1986 when Stone tapped him to design Salvador. Stone and Rubeo collaborated on three more films: Best Picture Oscar winner Platoon as well as Talk Radio and Born On The Fourth Of July. In 1989, Rubeo served as Production Designer on Bruce Beresford’s Academy Award winner Driving Miss Daisy and received an Academy Award nomination. In 1992, Rubeo began working with Hackford on the Chicano gang epic Blood In, Blood Out. Luke Goss’ new movie Blood Out is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on September 26. Goss plays small-town sheriff who must infiltrate a vicious Baltimore gang to avenge the murder of his brother in the action-thriller which also stars Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Vinnie Jones, Tamer Hassan and Val Kilmer. Goss was adored by millions of teenage girls as one half of Bros in the 1980s, before re-inventing himself as an action movie star in the 2000s.

Sometimes a movie comes along that rises above others. It hits all the right notes and earns itself a very special place in the film world. Unfortunately, Blood Out is not one of these movies. This action/thriller is of very poor quality. The acting, direction and writing are all subpar. It’s almost embarrassing how bad this movie is.

Meet Michael Savion (Luke Goss), a tough small town sheriff whose methods, while harsh, get the job done. He has a younger brother, David (Ryan Donowho) who is a member of a gang. There are films that stick with you long after the end credits roll because they are so amazing they feel like the hands of God touching your soul. And then there are films that stick with you because they are so awful that you treat them like major natural disasters. (Remember where you were when Jonah Hex came out?) Blood Out most definitely belongs in the latter category.

It is an ineptly directed, poorly written, and badly acted direct-to-dvd schlock about a small town deputy sheriff named Michael Savion (played woodenly and uncharismatically by Luke Goss) who travels to the big mean city and goes undercover as “Snake” to infiltrated the gang that murdered his drug addict brother. (I guess “Spike” or “Killer” weren’t too generic enough.)

It's an absolute wasteland out there on store shelves this week, as studios are offering virtually no major releases to speak of and instead we are left to sort through a pile of pathetic-looking direct-to-dvd titles. Believe it or not, South Park: Season 14 is probably the only high profile release out today, but if that's not your bag, you can always check out Sniper: Reloaded starring Billy Zane, Blood Out starring Val Kilmer and 50 Cent, or Sacrifice starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater! A couple of potential hidden gems include British comedy Bunny and the Bull from the makers of The Mighty Boosh and the lottery winner doc Lucky from director Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound). Fortunately, Criterion also has Brian De Palma's Blow Out and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on Blu, while Anchor Bay is releasing high-def versions of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain and El Topo.

Blow Out (Criterion Collection) I will hopefully have my review of this one finished tomorrow around noon -- before my screening of Hobo with a Shotgun -- but I will say right now this is a title worthy of your consideration. The best and obvious comparisons are Antonioni's Blow Up and Coppola's The Conversation, at least in terms of genre. It looks like badass action star Jason Statham is going to star in a new action thriller called Parker. He is currently in negotiations to join the film project, which is set to be directed by Taylor Hackford. Hackford has made a few films you may have heard of such as Against All Odds, Blood In Blood Out, Dolores Claiborne, The Devil's Advocate, Ray, and most recently he directed Love Ranch. It’s good to know that Val Kilmer has someone in his corner, a newfound hetero companion that will help him find decent work when all he can get is “The Traveler”. After starring together in both “Streets of Blood” and “Gun”, best friends forever Val Kilmer and 50 Cent are back in the cinematic saddle once again. Writer/director Jason Hewitt’s crime drama “Blood Out” finds the duo delivering some direct-to-video thrills alongside such Stv veterans as Luke Goss and Vinnie Jones. And while many are quick to piss all over their flicks, I happen to enjoy both Goss and Jones as actors, even when the films they choose to appear in are just this side of absolutely worthless. That may sound harsh, but even those guys know that their films are, at times, nearly unwatchable. “Blood Out” should hit DVD and Blu-ray on April 26th, 2011. In the meantime,...

Here’s the trailer for yet another 50 Cent straight-to-dvd movie - Blood Out, coming out in April 26th with Fiddy, Vinne Jones and Val Kilmer. This one looks like it was made for a much smaller budget than usual, along with drawn in cartoon gunfire blasts, and shot with someone’s borrowed video camera; but onward and upwards with the arts as they say!

"When you got a producer that has that kind of production track record, you even have to credit both Eminem's success and my success to Dr. Dre as a producer. My first single off of Get Rich or Die Tryin' — people constantly tell me it was a classic — was produced by Dr. Dre, 'In Da Club.' Without that momentum from that song, I'm not sure they would have taken to 'P.I.M.P.' the same way or '21 Questions' or any of the other hit records I released following that."

The film tells the story of when big city detectives refuse to further investigate his kid brother's gang related murder, small town Sheriff Michael Spencer drops the badge and goes undercover to find his brother's killer and avenge his death. 

The action/thriller will hit theaters in limited release in April.

Received a press release this morning alerting me to a scheduled press conference Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his Cheetah Vision Films will hold at the Sundance Film Festival later this week.

Why? Well, the press release says that Fiddy will talk about the 6 feature films he recently wrapped production on (some that we’ve profiled on this blog) under the 10 picture/$200 million deal that was announced last year.

But, of more interest to me is an announcement of his upcoming “huge” line-up of projects “that have been kept under wraps.” Specifically, 6 movies (on top of the previous 6 already complete) that are either in post-production, in production or pre-production, including Jekyll and Hyde, Vengeance, Morning Glory, Things Fall Apart, Blood Out, and Gun.

We already know about Things Fall Apart (Mario Van Peebles is directing), Gun (another pairing with Val Kilmer, which was actually released on DVD earlier this month), and Blood Out.

2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane co-star.

These 2 (50 Cent and Val Kilmer) must love working together so much, they paired up for the 3rd time (at least) since 2009, to co-star in another actioner, this one titled Blood Out. Neither plays the lead in this one however, though they both get top billing.

Luke Goss stars as good cop Michael Savion (who also happens to be a martial arts master), who is visited by his estranged, gang-banging younger brother David. David seeks Michael’s help in escaping the gang world; Michael reluctantly agrees, but when David is brutally murdered by his own gang, Michael is stonewalled by Detective Hardwick (50 Cent), who dismisses the crime as gang-on-gang violence, forcing Michael to infiltrate the gang and seek justice for his dead brother.

Intrigued? No? Well, maybe the below trailer will change your mind… or maybe not

It’s currently in post-production, according to IMDb, with a 2011 release planned.

On 90210, 23-year-old AnnaLynne McCord plays queen bee super snob Naomi Clark. We’ve seen some steamy make-outs between her and her TV co-stars, but that’s nothing compared to her sizzling sex scene in next year’s film, Blood Out!

In the movie, AnnaLynne plays a girl named Anya, who ends stripping down and getting hot and heavy with the character Hardwick, played by 35-year-old rapper, 50 Cent.

Val Kilmer is facing financial woes amid reports he owes nearly $500,000 in unpaid U.S. federal taxes. According to DetNews.com, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) filed a $498,165 lien against Kilmer on November 30 in New Mexico, where he owns a multi-million dollar ranch he put up for sale last year.

It's not the first time the "Top Gun" star has had issues with taxes. The IRS filed a lien against him for $538,000 in 2009. He reportedly settled that debt earlier this year. Kilmer's publicist has failed to respond to requests for a comment.

Despite the tax, the actor is still actively taking roles in a lot of movies such as "5 Days of August" and "Blood Out". The latter in which he stars opposite 50 Cent will be released April next year.

AnnaLynne McCord might have ended her romance with "Twilight Saga" actor Kellan Lutz and moved on with another man. Sparking rumor she is no longer with the actor, the actress known for her Naomi Clark portrayal on "90210" was spotted showing off intimacy with model Aaron O'Connell at a Halloween party in Palazzo's Lavo Las Vegas on Saturday, October 30.

During the bash for which she dressed up as the White Queen from "Alice in Wonderland", the 23-year-old reportedly was "far from shy" with Aaron. Words are, she walked into the spot holding hands with the model and was later seen "flirting" with him in a VIP section as the two were spotted "taking pictures together" and "drinking Veuve Clicquot champagne".

An observer further informed People magazine that the "Blood Out" actress was also spotted sitting on the model's lap in addition to wearing his pilot hat. The onlooker said, "They were all over each other.

Los Angeles-based sales company Cinema Management Group has completed 30 sales for titles it took to last month's Cannes Film Market, including ten pre-sales for the action thriller “Blood Out,” starring Luke Goss, Vinnie Jones, Val Kilmer and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, which completed principal photography last week in Louisiana.

Distributors purchasing the film include: Eagle Pictures for Australia and New Zealand, Ipa Asia Pacific for Thailand and Vietnam, Pratama for Indonesia, Videx for all pay TV in Latin America, Vision Film in Poland, Film Pop for Turkey, Cinetel in Hungary, North Film Distributors for the Czech and Slovak Republics, Svensk Filmindustri for Scandinavia and Front Row Entertainment for the Middle East.

Cmg said it is still in talks with distributors from Italy and Brazil for the title, which will be delivered by Cmg during the fourth quarter of this year.

Lionsgate/Grindstone acquired all distribution rights for U.S./Canada and Lionsgate U.

The two men have reportedly been embroiled in a long-running feud, which was sparked by an argument between the pair late last year. And the incident has disrupted filming for new picture "Blood Out", which stars both actors - because Jones "doesn't want to work with Tamer" anymore, according to Britain's Daily Mirror.

A source tells the publication. "Vinnie and Tamer have never had an easy relationship. They bickered over New Year and things have gone downhill since then. Now it's all-out war. Vinnie doesn't want to work with Tamer and the feeling is mutual. Both...

"Both men are so integral to the movie, though, so executives are pulling their hair out, trying to come up with a solution.

"At present they have rearranged two days of filming, and postponed shooting the opening scenes where Vinnie and Tamer have lines together. It is far from ideal. They are also offering to further separate the pair's on-set trailers to ensure they are kept at opposite ends of the park."

Filming for Blood Out, which also stars Val Kilmer, is due to start on Friday.

English movie heavyweights Vinnie Jones and Tamer Hassan have had a very public punch-up. The two actors, obviously not fearing the possibility of being typecast, were found brawling in a popular La celebrity hangout. Jones, 45, who has crafted a successful movie career as a traditionally thuggish supporting man (Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, X-Men: The Last Stand) has been friends with Hassan for some time, and the two are now working together on a new movie Blood Out.
