The original budget for The Hopeful was $150,000 to follow Cody Keith for his senior year in high school. When Cody decided to do an extra year of prep school, director Brendan Kirsch had to personally finance an extra year of shooting for $100,000 and shoot most of the football himself. The move paid off as the additional year of filming saw Cody Keith break six national passing records in Connecticut.
