A documentary that quietly avoids Caribbean visual clichés, director Malaury Eloi Paisley, expanding on her short Chanzy Blues, produces a compelling ground-level view of life in the Guadeloupean city Point-a-Pitre.
Expressed through pointedly chosen, consistently memorable interviews with a handful of locals, Tales Of A City finds voices in a homeless drug addict, an ageing former political activist who reminisces on dreams of revolution, and another who recites texts by writer Joël Beuze and anti-colonialist Amílcar Cabral.
Behind them, Paisley captures a place in a state of flux, where once towering buildings are torn to the ground, and the machines reducing them to rubble resemble monstrous predators. Recalling recent docs such as Andrea Luka Zimmerman’s Estate, A Reverie, or at the other end of the accommodation spectrum, Dreaming Walls, L’Homme Vertige forces you to lament changing cityscapes and the fate of residents at the mercy of local authorities and property.

Celebration of the legendary New York hotel and haven for actors, artists and musicians that spills secrets of squalor, celebrity and death
Earlier this year saw the release of Dreaming Walls, an interesting if meanderingly vague film about New York’s legendary Hotel Chelsea; the place which is actually an apartment building and artist colony, famous for residents and habitués including Andy Warhol, Sid Vicious, Isadora Duncan, Dylan Thomas and Arthur Miller. That rather downbeat film emphasised the efforts of longterm residents to stay in the building after it was bought by new owners who allegedly wanted to sanitise and gentrify it. Here is a second documentary which is far more celebratory, with far more interviewees, far more sexy name-dropping and more uproarious anecdotes, especially about the friendly ghosts who allegedly roam its corridors.
Again, this film pays tribute to the building’s manager Stanley Bard, who cultivated its reputation...

Any day now the renovated Chelsea Hotel will fully reopen, capping a drawn out process that has seen the grand edifice on the west side of Manhattan shrouded in netting and defaced by scaffolding for over a decade.
Repeated construction delays, legal wrangling between residents and the building owners, as well as a dispute with the city agency devoted to historic properties all contributed to the endless postponements. But the magic of a place that has been home to the artistic and idiosyncratic for over a century seemingly cannot be obscured by clouds of construction dust.
The new documentary Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel invites viewers inside the red brick palace to spend time with long-term residents who contribute to, and perhaps are, the essence of the Chelsea’s charm.
“It’s a film of encounters and the people we met, we love them,” explains Maya Duverdier, who co-directed...

"There's energy in the building." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled in full: Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel. It is indeed about the iconic "Hotel Chelsea" in New York City's Manhattan on W 23rd Street (see Google Maps). The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, Cph Dox, and next is screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this month. The end of an long upmarket renovation of the legendary Chelsea Hotel is partly longed for and partly dreaded by the artists who still live there. The film grants us access to their apartments and interweaves the past with the present. "Famous as the preferred abode of New York’s bohemia from the 1950s to the 1980s. Here, bourgeois society’s misfits – sex workers, poets, queers and artists – were able to...

One of the details that might stick with you is an argument regarding provision of toilet cleaning. That the room had not previously contained a bathroom meant that it had never before had an attached responsibility to maintain that quantity of tile and glass and porcelain in a state of hygiene. As the room was to be amended during conversion to include such a facility, that need which had not previously been met by the occupant should continue to be met by forces external. Which is perhaps rational, but not reasonable.
This is the Chelsea Hotel. Irrational, unreasonable, infamous. Dreaming Walls is less a documentary than an attempt at a sense memory. It owes a debt to a 1981 BBC Arena documentary named for the hotel, but neither provides context the other lacks. They are instead frames of reference, anchors some four decades apart mooring a place adrift in culture into.

Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier’s documentary “Dreaming Walls,” about the legendary Chelsea Hotel in New York and its controversial renovation, has unveiled a trailer.
The film world premieres in the Panorama section of the Berlinale on Saturday.
The Chelsea Hotel, an icon of 1960s counterculture, was a haven for famous artists and intellectuals including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin and the superstars of Warhol’s Factory. However, the building’s lengthy renovation into a luxury hotel, which has spanned more than 10 years, has been a source of ongoing frustration for its tenants, as dozens of them, many in their later years, still live amid scaffolding and constant construction.
Against this chaotic backdrop, the film travels through the hotel’s storied halls, exploring the bohemian origins that contributed to the Chelsea’s mythical stature.
