Steve gets hit with snot bombs on three occasions. Unfortunately for Steve, this was the hardest part to catch on film. The crew made four devices and tried several methods to get it to work. Each time you see him sneezed on, it's using a different method though the last shot which was the first sneeze was everyone's favorite. The device used was dubbed the 'snot gun' and it was used again for the explosion in Hildegard's scene.
Steve's entrance is dramatically lit with a hint of smoke rising from behind. The lighting was planned but the smoke came from Shiva's cigarette. She was holding the light at the time and they decided to keep it in because it added to the desired effect.
The producer, Garith Pettibone, plays all the extra vampires in this film just as in their previous films. The director plays a chap named Van Helsing, and he has also played other Van Helsing family members in previous films.
This was filmed on the coldest night Florida has seen in a long time. During the head explosion, which also involved a finicky sneeze effect, Steve gets hit with a bucket of entrails and blood. After dozens of bad sneezes, they get one good one and the bucket is thrown, but all the blood froze in it forcing another round of dousing for a cold and bewildered Steve.
