The are two related and interwoven stories in this documentary. One is of Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane. They met, performed together, and built a modern dance company. After Zane's death of AIDS, Jones managed to recover from the loss of his life and choreographic partner, to create D-Man in the Waters, in collaboration with the company. The other story is the rehearsals for D-Man in the Waters by a college dance team, advised by Jones. Moving back and forth meant that the film avoided the "talking head" disease of many documentaries, and gives us more of a view of the dance piece itself.
