The U.K.’s Vertigo Films and Germany’s SquareOne Productions are teaming on Young Adult focused supernatural drag drama “Vamping.”
Billed as a mix of “Pose” and “The Vampire Diaries,” the eight-part series is set against the backdrop of Berlin’s hedonistic, nocturnal LGBTQ+ club culture. It follows young British drag queen, Everett who, after a triumphant performance at Berlin’s hottest drag club, finds that he has unwittingly been turned into a vampire. He sets off to uncover the truth and finds himself the protagonist in an impending culture war between vampire tribes.
“Vamping” was created by the U.K.’s Matthew Jacobs Morgan (“The Rig”) and German-American multi-disciplinary artist and screenwriter Sophie-Yukiko Hasters. As a central figure of the Qtpoc (queer and trans people of colour) community in Berlin, on the series Sophie-Yukiko Hasters brings her experience of German Ballroom Culture; where she oversees the German faction...

Cinemas in many markets were closed in the first part of the year, and moviegoing came back in a big way in the second half, thanks to such tentpoles as Spider-Man: No Way Home, No Time To Die, F9, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Dune. Comparing results for the second half of 2019 with the same period in 2021, revenues for the markets where data is available were on average 35% below pre-pandemic levels including France (-22%), the UK (-26%), Russia (-29.5%) and Poland (-24.3%). Whatever your opinion of Argentinian director Gaspar Noé, you have to agree that you’re unlikely to forget one of his films in a hurry.
Despite having seen it only once at a retrospective in London’s BFI, that intensely disturbing and completely horrifying scene from Irreversible is likely to be burnt onto my frontal lobes for all of time. They’re hardly chilled out Sunday afternoon viewing, as Noé’s movies always make you sit up and pay attention, and that’s something that looks to be continued with his upcoming effort Psyché.
According to Government funding group Tax Shelter Belgium (via Google Translate), the film will be set in the mid 1990s and revolve around twenty urban dancers gathering to rehearse in a disused boarding school in the middle of a forest. So far, so StreetDance 3D, right?

BBC Films will receive the BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.
The film-making arm of the BBC will take home the honour during the awards ceremony on Sunday, February 8.
Chairman of BAFTA's Film Committee Nik Powell said: "I cannot think of a more deserving institution for this award than BBC Films, unbelievably in its 25th year and with more than 250 predominantly British films in its catalogue.
"With a wide range of films from populist British box office hits like Billy Elliot and Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie and an enviable collection of ground-breaking films, I hope that this award will be not simply a recognition of past and present achievements but also an affirmation of why BBC Films is so important for the film industry both here in the UK and further afield."

Let's get one thing out of the way from the off. Walking on Sunshine, a jukebox musical featuring all your favourite pop hits from the '80s, can in no way be recommended to anyone under the guise of being "a good movie". The story ticks off every rom-com cliché in the book, the characters have all the appeal of third-degree sunburn, the acting frequently hits pantomime levels and the production values on both the recorded tracks and song and dance numbers leave something to be desired.
Yes, Walking on Sunshine really does make Mamma Mia! look like Citizen Kane. And yet, despite all this, you can't take your eyes off it for a second. One thing you can't accuse this film of is lacking in car-crash entertainment value.

Britain's Got Talent returns to our small screen on Saturday (April 12), and we've already been treated to a sneak peek at some of the acts we can expect to see on stage during the show's premiere.
But whatever happened to some of the show's most memorable acts from years gone by? What have they gone on to do following their appearance on the ITV talent show, we hear you ponder? Wonder no more with some of Bgt's past performers - from stand-out stars to the plain strange:
Faryl Smith
Mezzo-soprano Faryl Smith - then aged just 12 - blew the judges away and probably made Amanda Holden break down and blub with her beautiful rendition of 'Ava Maria' on the show in 2008.

Exclusive: Protagonist exec named head of acquisitions and development at Pinewood Pictures.
Protagonist Pictures head of acquisitions Jeremy Baxter is to join UK production outfit Pinewood Pictures as head of acquisitions and development.
Baxter will join the production arm of the Pinewood Studios Group, run by Former CinemaNX chairman Steve Christian, in late April.
The addition of the executive is a coup for Pinewood, which to date has backed productions including Crispian Mills’ A Fantastic Fear Of Everything, Amma Asante’s period-drama Belle and Richard Shepard’s Dom Hemingway, and is now looking to ramp its production activities.
Parent company Pinewood Studios manages the multi-million pound Isle of Man Film Fund and was recently appointed as advisor to the Welsh government on their new film and TV investment pool.

Head of BBC Films Christine Langan explains why the end of the awards season is a good thing, and how she 'nurtures' winners like The Queen and Philomena
The Oscars inspire various emotions in film producers: suspense, elation, deflation … and relief. Whatever the outcome, award season is finally over. "They are very exciting, but it's got to the point where they take up a big chunk of the year," observes Christine Langan, head of BBC Films. "You're barely through the summer when the pundits are coming up with a programme of what to watch."
Still, she grants, for those outside the major studios, gongs can be a film's best friend. "Working in the independent sector, you're in the lunatic gang anyway, hoping for some magic – a really unusual story or a really knockout performance – so of course awards are important. They can prolong the life of your film, get it noticed,...

New figures from the British Film Institute suggest a "breakthrough" over the past three years for female screenwriters, while the number of women directing UK independent films remains low. How well are women represented in this industry?
• Get the data
Under-representation of women in key creative and production roles in the film industry has been well-documented for many years. The latest figures from the British Film Institute (BFI), looking at female screenwriters and directors of UK independent films, provide a varied set of results.
According to the BFI, there has been something of a "breakthrough" over the past three years with the representation of female screenwriters in the top 20 UK independent films reaching 37%.
The BFI also break this figure down by profitable films, with profitability estimated from an indicator developed by the BFI research and statistics unit. Of the profitable UK independent films over the same period, 30% had a female screenwriter.

I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.
Gimme The Loot (15)
(Adam Leon, 2012, Us) Tashiana Washington,...

Brit dance movie All Stars provides some decent choreography but little in the way of originality, Caroline writes...
Three years since Streetdance 3D hit British audiences as a superior dance movie encouraged by the Britain’s Got Talent-inspired streetdance explosion, here's a version of the movie for artsy youngsters which, though wrapped up as a political statement of sorts, adds absolutely nothing inspiring or different to the dance movie genre.
A lot the problem isn’t with this film in particular, as the sheer number of dance movies released every year borders on the ludicrous when you realise how similar all of them are. That said, this is depressingly haphazard and seems like a wasted opportunity to address certain real-life issues.
All Stars boasts a talented young cast but, unfortunately, that talent lies mainly in their dancing rather than acting abilities. The premise is...

Here’s the first trailer released for Vertigo’s new movie All Stars. Following on from their largely successful Streetdance series of movies (although not a sequel), this movie aims to explore a child’s imagination with the use of dance, karate and much more all in 3d.
All Stars cast includes Theo Stevenson (Horrid Henry: The Movie), Akai (StreetDance), Ashley Jensen (Extras, Gnomeo & Juliette), Kimberley Walsh (Girls Aloud), John Barrowman (Torchwood), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) Ashley Walters, is directed by Ben Gregor and it’ll be with us Summer 2013.
Shy kid Jaden (Akai) teams up with loudmouth Ethan (Theo Stevenson) to raise money to save a youth club doomed in the cutbacks. Their plan- put on a super-ambitious dance show. Trouble is, Jaden’s been banned from dancing by his parents and Ethan can’t dance one bit. And the other members of their new crew turn out to be total misfits.

We asked you to send in your questions for the doyenne of British film. This lunchtime, she responds …
It was Barry Norman who first coined the verb "to rample" (def: "an ability to reduce a man to helplessness though a chilly sensuality"). Now, here's your chance to have your own words virtually rampled: Charlotte Rampling is in town this week to promote I, Anna, a new noir thriller told from the point of view of Rampling's femme fatale, who falls for the detective (Gabriel Byrne) in charge of a murder case. The film – the directorial debut of Rampling's son, Barnaby Southcombe – boasts a sterling cast including Eddie Marsan, Honor Blackman and Hayley Atwell. The film opens in the UK on 7 December and you can watch a trailer for it here.
Perhaps you'd like to quiz Rampling on her immaculate back catalogue, from her two early movies with Dirk Bogarde (Visconti's The Damned,...

It has been an interesting, arthouse-driven year for both pop star Kylie Minogue and actress Gemma Arterton. The former features in the lesbian werewolf drama "Jack and Diane" (opening today) and in one of the most talked about movies of the year, Leos Carax's "Holy Motors." As for Arterton, she's been busy on the festival circuit helping to get the word out for Neil Jordan's vampire flick "Byzantium" and the feel-good Brit comedy "Song for Marion." But the two are set to team up in something a bit more multiplex-ready. Minogue and Arterton will star in "Walking On Sunshine," which is not a biopic on Katrina & The Waves. Instead, it tells the story of a mother and daughter who fall in love with the same man in Spain, all powered by songs of the '80s for some reason. And oh yeah, there will be dancing! The film...

Last week saw the release of Mark Wahlberg-starrer Contraband to our shelves, and this week brings with it a rather different line-up, with the lovely Marilyn Monroe getting the HD treatment, alongside Robert Pattinson amongst highly impressive company in Bel Ami, and the anticipated Shanghai, with John Cusack leading a fantastic cast.
With that in mind,
My picks of the week:
Mikael Håfström’s Shanghai.
And the Blu-ray release of Marilyn Monroe’s Forever Marilyn.

In commissioning a quartet of short films for London 2012, the BBC and Film4 probably hoped that each piece would act like one of a track relay team, wherein the four filmmakers make Olympic contributions to a cohesive and dynamic whole. But there are times during the collective 106 minutes of these films when the squad – Mike Leigh, Lynne Ramsay, Asif Kapadia and Streetdance 3D directors Max and Dania – flirts with dropping the baton. On this form, running together, they would struggle to scrape a bronze medal.

We're slightly over a month from the kick-off of the 2012 Olympics, and here in London, you can certainly tell: the locals are battening down the hatches, the facilities are desperately getting their last of lick of paint, and it's already virtually impossible to leave the house without some kind of reminder of the bonanza of track and field events that'll be taking place from July 27th. But what does the event hold for those who could give a shit about sport? For all the talk of a Cultural Olympiad to take place alongside the games, it mostly seems to involve international poetry slams and Scissor Sisters concerts by the Thames, and we'd rather go see the equestrian events than see either of those.
However, there are a couple of treats in store for film fans. Firstly, Oscar-winner Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") is responsible for the opening ceremony, unveiling his plans...

Justin Bieber made millions from his 3D film last year so now One Direction and Simon Cowell want a slice of the 3D pie. How can we salvage an undoubtedly awful movie?
Say what you like about Simon Cowell, you can't deny he has an appalling taste in movies. Nine years ago he had a hand in the dreadful From Justin to Kelly, a cheap, cynical and transparent money-making exercise in which the winner and runner-up of the first American Idol series sang songs and ran around on a beach, failing to conjure any chemistry together. It was horrible, but Cowell wasn't deterred.
Two years ago, he made StreetDance 3D: a cheap, cynical and transparent money-making exercise in which all the contestants from Britain's Got Talent who Cowell didn't know what to do with were flung together and apparently told to re-enact the plot of Step Up from memory.

With Sam Mendes helming his first James Bond movie as we speak with Skyfall, Danny Boyle is already getting a head start as he completed production on his own film with the spy character. And you’ll get to see it even sooner. It’s not a feature film as one might expect, rather an opening short for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
With the ceremonies directed by Boyle, The Sun reports that the Queen invited Daniel Craig in character to the Buckingham Palace for the crew to film this short film. There is rumors that she’ll actually be featured, but for now the only plot details are that Bond gets a special assignment to kick-off the activities. Shot in her Majesty’s private rooms, Craig as Bond will then jump on a helicopter and parachute down in East London’s Stratford Olympic stadium.
I can’t imagine the entire extravaganza...

In case it wasn’t blandly ineffective enough the first time round, the inexplicable British hit Streetdance 3D now has a three-dimensional follow-up, one which layers on the very sexiest Salsa dancing, but still struggles with insufferably bad acting and a thin, shopworn script.
After American streetdancer Ash (Falk Hentschel) loses an important dance-off for his team against rival crew Invincible, he finds himself globe-trotting in order to build a team that can beat them at an upcoming dance competition. When Ash chances upon stunning Salsa dancer Eva (Sofia Boutella), he may have his answer, if he can find a way to successfully meld the streetdance style with Eva’s contrasting one.
While few people are going to expect robust narrative craft from a 3D dance film, there’s such a stupefying lack of effort put into the characters and the story here that it makes...

The veteran Scottish actor has always been a smoothie, and now he's showing off his moves in Streetdance 2. He talks to us about salsa, stardom – and being the oldest person on set
In the middle of Streetdance 2, a breakdance crew storms a Parisian bar to show off their moves. They flex and writhe as the music thumps. On the edge of the circle, away from the sweat and the fury, Tom Conti leads a partner through a gentle spot of salsa.
"It really wasn't about dancing," says the 71-year-old of his awkward turn on the boards. "It was about the connection between man and woman. The streetdancers don't connect with each other, they just do phenomenal acrobatics. There's no sex, really."
Conti doesn't like to dance. He has trouble with the tango, spurns the quickstep. He turned down Strictly Come Dancing ("I'd make a total arse of myself"), but he likes music,...

There wasn’t a whole lot on offer last week with Hunger Games unequivocally eclipsing all the other releases. It’s received fairly unanimously positive reviews and looks like being the first box-office smash of the summer. Meanwhile both The Kid With a Bike and Wild Bill have received their own fair share of plaudits and would appear to be well worth seeking out.
This time out though there’s a wide range of releases hitting the screens ranging from big-budget mythological blockbuster and animated piracy adventure to hard-hitting prison documentary and a ghastly looking vampire spoof.
If you want to check to see if any of these films are playing near you, you can visit Find Any Film and they’ll be able to help.

Those who know me could have some trouble taking this at face value, but I “understand” the Olympics. I fully respect what they signify on a global and cultural level, and, make no bones about it, the acts of physicality on display are often stunning. And they don’t interest me. In the slightest.
Almost as if those in charge were trying to catch my attention (not really), it’s reported that BBC Films and Film4 are are backing four shorts that, as part of this summer’s London 2012 Festival, will display “U.K. filmmaking talent during the 12 week Britain-wide cultural celebration.” I’d be mildly intrigued on those grounds alone, but I get quite hopeful when looking at the list of filmmakers: Mike Leigh, Lynne Ramsay, Asif Kapadia (Senna), and Max Giwa & Dania Pasquini (StreetDance 3D). [THR]
Maybe those last two don’t carry the same weight.

Why put up one poster when you can put up 11 right?! Vertigo Films have sent us a brand new quad poster and 10 other character posters for their new movie, Street Dance 2. The first movie turned out to be one of the most successful independent British movies of all time bringing in £6.6m at the UK Box office. This new offering brings more awesome dance moves but time will tell if the sequel can be as successful as it’s predecessor. Streetdance 3D was released at the height of all things dance as Britain’s Got Talent was sweeping the nation with new and exciting moves and the likes of Flawless and eventual winners of that season being Susan Boyle in the process, Diversity. That was a fair while ago now and I’m, not sure the movies ill have the longevity that it’s makers hope it does but I...

Not too sure what to make of this but Vertigo have just announced via a press release that they’ll be bringing ‘Top Cat: The Movie’ to the big screen. I can still remember to this day my dad doing impressions of Top Cat saying hello to Office Dibble in the tradition Top Cat voice but I am struggling to work out how they’ll transition the cartoon to the big screen. But hey, they’re doing it with Postman Pat so why not Top Cat too!

A new tech-savvy police chief joins the force and not only threatens to retire bumbling Officer Dibble, but stop the feline antics in Hoagy’s Alley, once and for all.

Check out the official Teaser Trailer for StreetDance 2, which will be in cinemas in March 2012.
StreetDance 2 sees the return of a few favourites from the first film, including George Sampson, who won over audiences with his portrayal of cheeky chappie Eddie, and dance troupe Flawless reprise their role as dance crew The Surge. Falk Hentschel and Sofia Boutella star in the lead roles of Ash and Eva.
When top street dancer Ash (Hentschel) is humiliated and laughed off stage by American crew Invincible, he sets off to gather the best dancers from around the world to take them on – with a dance style they weren’t expecting. With landmark locations, a spectacular fusion of dance styles and an unparalleled vibrancy, the sequel to StreetDance sees our hero fall in love with a beautiful salsa dancer as he discovers the magic, power and passion of dancing for the ultimate global dance off.

The original Streetdance movie was a surprise UK box office hit so, of course, a sequel was swiftly ordered. Directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini, Streetdance 2 3D sees a lot of the cast of the original movie returning for the sequel including the girls favourite George Sampson, and the folks at Heat got the scoop on the first trailer for the film, which looks a lot like a UK version of Step Up 3D…

The first StreetDance 3D movie surprised pretty much everyone when it shot to the top of the UK box office. The first movie was timed perfectly to coincide with hype that was Britain’s Got Talent giving winning acts like George Sampson and Diversity and runners up like Flawless to showcase some of their amazing dance moves. Vertigo Films obviously loving the success that the first brought, have now got a second movie out with the catch title StreetDance 2 3D which is scheduled for release March 2012.
StreetDance 2 3D is directed by Max Giwa & Dania Pasquini and features many of the acts that you got to see wow you in the first movie.
