Zach Cregger's film "Barbarian" cause a minor stir when it was released in 2022. Made for a downright modest budget of $4.5 million, the film raked in $45 million at the box office, grabbing the attention of many enthused fright fans seeking new voices in the pop horror zeitgeist.
"Barbarian" was also one of many films in the emerging microgenre of Airbnb-related horror -- Fearbnb? -- wherein the protagonists check into a bed-and-breakfast, only to find something eerie or menacing about the house they've paid for. The genre also included films like "The Rental," "Superhost," "You Should Have Left," and "Room for Rent." Fearbnb movies were timely, tapping into the public's uneasiness with a total lack of regulation in the upstart self-rental business; if no one is overseeing your Airbnb, who is to say the homeowner isn't keeping a monster in their basement?

While cable and traditional TV aren't dead yet, they are certainly dying. Netflix ensured some time ago that streaming was going to be the future, but the pandemic accelerated that trend and consumers now have to choose between any number of streaming services any time they flip on their device of choice, including Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Peacock, Max, and even niche services like the horror-focused Shudder. Not only that, but viewers then have to navigate the seemingly endless sea of options within each service. It's become truly overwhelming. This is a core problem with streaming as it currently exists, and it simply must be addressed.
It used to be that one would flip on the TV, do a little channel surfing, and land on something that was already programmed by any number of channels already being paid for. Yes, there was still choice involved, but it wasn't starting from scratch.

About nine months months after the writers on MTV’s viral comedy clips show Ridiculousness launched their attempt to unionize, the group has reached a first labor contract with its employer.
The deal covering a group of 11 creative consultants who are unionized with the Writers Guild of America West was signed on Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The new deal provides these staffers with minimum wage rates consistent with the WGA’s minimum basic agreement, residuals in basic cable and other markets and pension and health benefits, with paid parental leave included. The contract also establishes protocols for grievances and arbitration, holiday pay, language on the use of AI and “full season employment guarantees,” per the union.
The deal is retroactive to October 23, 2023, and creative consultants are set to receive payments, health and pension contributions and residuals dating back to that time. The contract does not require a ratification vote to take effect.

Recently, Amazon Prime introduced a new series that promises to be full of laughs, drama, and adventures. In The Goat, previous relative stars from multiple shows will compete for the title of “Greatest Of All Time Reality TV Star.”
Goat Coming To Prime
Markedly, Prime Video is bringing a new series that will crown The Goat Reality TV star. Notably, it looks like the crossover that reality TV has been missing. Coupled with challenges and alliances, the host Daniel Tosh jokes the contestants will have to put their “strength and lack of life skills” to the test to face off for the title. Undeniably, the show is packed with a reality star-studded cast from The Bachelor, Love Is Blind, Big Brother, Real Housewives, and many more popular shows. Each of the fourteen contestants will compete to be named the best reality star and of course, walk away with a $200,000 prize.

Tosh.0, the satirical comedy show hosted by Daniel Tosh, ended in November 2020 after 12 successful seasons and 301 episodes. Comedy Central canceled Tosh.0 as they wanted to focus on adult animation series instead of live-action shows. After Tosh.0, Daniel Tosh started a podcast called Tosh Show, where he interviews people, shares opinions, and discusses his life. He has also done voice acting and is set to host a reality competition series on Amazon Freevee.
The comedy television show Tosh.0 premiered on June 4, 2009, but the series has not aired new episodes since November 24, 2020. Daniel Tosh, a comedian and filmmaker, co-created the Comedy Central television show with Mike Gibbons, and it was a hit following the premiere of the pilot episode. The satirical series went on to air for 12 seasons and 301 episodes on the network before coming to a complete stop at the end of 2020.

As thousands of its members remain on strike, the Writers Guild of America West is attempting to organize staffers at MTV’s long-running comedy show devoted to viral Internet videos, Ridiculousness.
On Wednesday, July 12, 11 full-time “creative consultants” (the WGA West did not offer specific job titles but said many had that phrase associated with their roles) on the Rob Dyrdek-hosted show filed a petition for a National Labor Relations Board election in an attempt to organize with the western branch of the writers’ union. According to the union, the staffers initially asked for voluntary recognition from management after a number signed union cards, a request that was denied.
The WGA West said in a statement that the staffers are seeking “parity with their peers in the industry and respect for their work” with the union drive. The union considers Ridiculousness comparable to pre-existing covered projects including America’s Funniest Home Videos and Tosh.0,...

Channel-surfing may be a nostalgic pastime these days, but those who experienced the mindless boredom of finding “nothing on TV” will probably recall the most compellingly boring show ever: “The Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. With his signature curly brown afro and soothing voice, Ross was a fixture on PBS and of many a rainy afternoon. Though new episodes stopped airing in 1994, the late painter reached sustained notoriety through international reruns, Twitch streams, a Netflix deal, and a YouTube channel. In 2021, Netflix released a documentary about his life, “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.”
A new fictional film plays on Ross’ pop culture icon status without using his name or any particular details of his life, instead trading on his distinctive look and the public television painting show setting. Written and directed by Brit McAdams (“Tosh.0”), “Paint” stars Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a revered painter with a...

IFC has dropped the trailer and art for its upcoming comedy “Paint,” and leading man Owen Wilson goes full-on Bob Ross mode in it.
The film stars Wilson as Carl Nagyl, Vermont’s top TV painter who has everything going for him, from a fanbase to a van and even a perm, until a younger artist takes his spotlight. Nagyl is reminiscent of beloved TV icon Bob Ross, who led PBS’ instructional TV program “The Joy of Painting” from 1983 to 1994. He passed away in 1995 at 52 years old.
Wilson leads the film, having been previously featured in “Zoolander,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Bottle Rocket,” “Loki” and “The French Dispatch.” The actor also has the upcoming film “Haunted Mansion” on his docket with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto and Winona Ryder.
Joining the Oscar-nominated star, the “Paint” cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root and newcomer Lucy Freyer.

Stand-up comedians have a unique way of branding their own humor while making strides in the business. Most are totally fine with performing on stage, but it is common to see successful comedians try their hand at film, television, and even podcasts. The ones making the most money, like Joe Rogan, are the ones that reach huge audiences often.

Paramount Plus is taking a page from ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV streaming service with the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through always-on themed collections of shows — just like old-fashioned television.
On Thursday, Paramount Plus launched Live Channels, a new feature that curates popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, pulled from ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources.
The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises such as “Star Trek,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.”
Paramount Plus is adopting the linear TV-style model pioneered by Pluto TV, which Viacom acquired in early 2019. Tom Ryan, founder of Pluto TV, was elevated to president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming a year ago.

Comedy Central's Tosh.0 became one of the network's most successful and well-renowned series. Daniel Tosh's brand of snarky humor turned out to be a perfect way to introduce wide audiences to people and places in the world that otherwise wouldn't get much attention.

Singer-songwriter David Archuleta revealed on Saturday that he is part of the Lgbtqia+ community, talking about how he’s grappled with his sexual identity, in relation to his Mormon faith.
“I’ve been open to myself and my close family for some years now that I am not sure about my own sexuality,” the former American Idol finalist said in a message shared on Instagram. “I came out in 2014 as gay to my family. But then I had similar feelings for both genders so maybe a spectrum of bisexual.”
Archuleta subsequently said that he also identifies, in some ways, with people who identify as asexual, asking for “more understanding” and compassion, on the part of those who haven’t had to reconcile their sexuality and faith. “There are people experiencing the same feelings of being Lgbtqia+…who are wrestling to follow their beliefs that are so important to them, just as I have,...

The showrunner of “Key & Peele” filed a class action lawsuit on Thursday accusing the Writers Guild of America of agreeing to a secret deal that shorted him out of streaming residuals from the show.
Shortly after the show ended its five-year run in 2015, Comedy Central made the entire series — more than 300 sketches — available on its website.
In the lawsuit, showrunner Jay Martel alleges that Viacom systematically underpaid residuals — or paid nothing at all — from those streams, and from streams on other ad-supported platforms. The complaint alleges that the company did the same thing with other Comedy Central shows, including “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” and “Tosh.0.”

The finale of “Tosh.0” on Tuesday marks the end of an era for Comedy Central, one that was dominated by talent-driven variety series that helped to launch the careers of Amy Schumer and Jordan Peele. But as the long-running clip show hosted by Daniel Tosh ends its 12-year run, Comedy Central finds itself in a much different world. When “Tosh.O” premiered in June 2009, President-elect Joe Biden was a few months into his tenure as vice president, Netflix was the company that mailed you DVDs and the cable bundle was thriving. Now the cable bundle is leaking like a sieve and streaming dominates the entertainment landscape, as individual networks lose some of their independence. Tuesday was initially not supposed to be the end of “Tosh.0’s” run. In January, Comedy Central ordered an additional four seasons, spanning 80 episodes, of “Tosh.0” and signed the comedian to a first-look deal. But amid...

On Wednesday morning, Mike Catherwood spent an hour on a call with Quibi executives for his new animated project, “Rudy.” Then, he went to pick up his daughter from school. By the time he got home, Quibi was dead.
“I have to assume that those executives didn’t know,” Catherwood told Variety. “Otherwise they’re really good actors. Because we had an hourlong conversation about moving forward in scripts, like what’s working on script number three and what’s not. To then read the news, I was completely blown away.”
Catherwood, whose project had been greenlighted, but not yet officially announced, is one of presumably dozens of series creators and showrunners who find themselves — and their shows — in limbo now that Quibi has called it quits.

With Hollywood production sideswiped by the coronavirus pandemic for five months, TV networks and streamers’ pipeline is starting to dry up. There are promising signs, with a handful of series already back in production and a couple of dozen more on track to start filming in the next couple of weeks.
While the situation remains fluid as we swing into the fall season, here are the fall premiere dates for new series and new seasons of returning shows that have been set so far. Another Comedy Central staple is saying goodbye a little sooner than expected: The pop culture clip show Tosh.0 will end with Season 12, reversing the network’s previous decision to renew the show.
Back in January, Comedy Central picked up Tosh.0 for four more seasons, ensuring it would stay on the air through at least Season 16. But this new development will bring the show to an end this fall, though ViacomCBS reportedly plans to shop Tosh.0 to other outlets.

To promote the launch of One Day At a Time on Pop TV, ViacomCBS made the Season 4 premiere simulcast across three networks from the Entertainment & Youth Group, Pop, TV Land and Logo. It was envisioned as a one-time thing to eventize the debut and put the series in front of more viewers. But in light of the ratings results for the premiere, which showed that almost four times more people watched it on TV Land than on the primary channel, Pop, the simulcast on TV Land is being extended.
Tomorrow’s (March 31) Odatt episode, “Penny Pitching,” will air on Pop TV and TV Land at 9:30 Pm. Reps for Pop would not say if the Pop/TV Land simulcast would be made permanent. On Saturday, 64-year-old “Mad” Mike Hughes was killed when a rocket he was attached to crashed in the desert in San Bernardino County, California. Hughes was a member of the Flat Earth community, a subculture consisting of people who (despite all scientific evidence pointing squarely to the contrary) believe that the Earth is not round, but flat. In numerous interviews, he had stated that the goal of his rocket launches was to prove that the planet was not spherical (as, again, all scientific evidence indicates), but “Frisbee-shaped.”

Viacom’s cable portfolio was once a shining example to the rest of the industry, but the company has been struggling to revitalize its most important brands for years. With the merger between Viacom and CBS now officially underway, the health of those brands is more important than ever.
When Bob Bakish took over as president and CEO in late 2016, he specifically called out six core networks — MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Bet and Paramount Network — as the keys to Viacom’s success. The Emmys’ variety and reality categories are in many ways the timeliest categories, and yet also the most unchanging. In the variety field, you’ll find late-night comedians like Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, John Oliver and Jimmy Kimmel, whose political humor is television’s most current and most barbed. Apart from perhaps MSNBC, this is the center of the anti-Trump resistance on TV.
But these are also categories in which Television Academy members find shows they like and continue to vote for them year after year, leading to long winning streaks for David Letterman, Jon Stewart, “The Kennedy Center Honors” and Jeff Probst in the past, and for Stephen Colbert, “The Amazing Race,” John Oliver and “The Voice” more recently.
Still, a few formidable newcomers are hoping to break in this year, from “Desus and Mero” to “Tosh.0” to “The Masked Singer” to Bruce Springsteen and Beyonce.

The streamer is also adding a slate of “signature channels” which hone in on popular programming from Viacom’s networks – spinning them into dedicated, themed channels. Those include a Paramount Movie Channel, MTV Guy Code, Spike Outdoors, and Comedy Central Standup among several others.
“We are thrilled to expand the Pluto TV offering with the addition of Viacom’s world-class channel brands and iconic programming. This is a major step forward in our mission of entertaining the planet,” said Tom Ryan,...

Lauren Corrao has been named executive vice president of original programming and development for Freeform.
Corrao takes over the role from Karey Burke, who was named the head of ABC Entertainment in November following the departure of Channing Dungey. Corrao will report directly to Freeform president Tom Ascheim.
In her new position, Corrao will oversee all scripted and unscripted development and current original programming, in addition to the casting and talent development.
“Lauren’s wealth of experience coupled with her incredible creative instinct as well as close working relationships with many talented writers and producers will be invaluable to Freeform,” Ascheim said. “In collaboration with the programming team, she will undoubtedly grow our slate of successful series and continue to build an environment for the talent community to tell powerful stories that become a lasting part of the cultural zeitgeist.”

Last Year’s Winner: “Saturday Night Live”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: “Saturday Night Live” has won two years running, meaning it’s won exactly half of the awards ever handed out for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. However, despite Lorne Michaels’ landmark NBC series’ Emmy dominance over the last few years, it didn’t fare all that well before the Best Variety Series category was split in two: Sketch and Talk. “SNL” only won two awards in 38 years prior to the separation and hadn’t taken home the top prize since 1993.
Fun Fact: Unlike other actors, when “SNL” performers are nominated for Emmys they’re not credited for each character they’ve played. For instance, last year Tatiana Maslany was nominated for playing “Sarah Manning, Helena, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Rachel Duncan, Krystal Goderitch, Elizabeth (Beth) Childs, Jennifer Fitzsimmons, Katja Obinger, Tony Sawicki, Veera Suominen (M.K.), Camilla Torres and Unnamed Clone” in “Orphan Black.

Prominent Los Angeles comedian Brody Stevens died Friday in Los Angeles, Variety has confirmed. He was 48.
“Brody was an inspiring voice who was a friend to many in the comedy community,” Stevens’ reps said in a statement. “He pushed creative boundaries and his passion for his work and his love of baseball were contagious. He was beloved by many and will be greatly missed. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”
According to TMZ, Stevens was found in his L.A. home in an apparent suicide.
A regular at Los Angeles comedy clubs like the Comedy Store, Stevens was known for sets with a positive spin. In 2013, he was featured in his own Comedy Central special called “Brody Stevens: Enjoy It!” and was frequently a warm-up act on comedy TV shows like “Why? With Hannibal Buress,” “Chelsea Lately,” “Who Gets The Last Laugh?,” and “The Best Damn Sports Show Period.

Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider were on hand during one of the most memorable seasons in the recent history of “Saturday Night Live.” They are hoping for a repeat of sorts at Comedy Central.
When “The Other Two” debuts on Comedy Central on January 24, it won’t have impressions of President Trump or clever music videos featuring the entire female cast of “SNL,” but it will carry equally funny and bizarre elements. The comedy, the first project from the duo since they left “SNL” after serving as co-head writers during its landmark 42nd season, tells the story of a brother and sister whose dysfunction comes into crisp focus after their younger sibling becomes a YouTube sensation.
“Could you imagine if that were your brother?” asks Schneider, in a recent interview. “It all comes from there, basically.” And the siblings’ relationship mirrors some of their own friendship.

Last Year’s Winner: “Saturday Night Live”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: Since the TV Academy split the Outstanding Variety Series category into two sections in 2015 (Sketch and Talk), no one show has won twice. Last year’s winner was “SNL,” which led the entire field in nominations.
Fun Fact: “Saturday Night Live,” “Portlandia,” and “Drunk History” have been been nominated every year since the category was created, and all three are eligible in 2018.
“Saturday Night Live” found success far beyond this category last year, and that helped solidify the win here. The long-running NBC sketch series isn’t quite as buzzy as it was a year ago, but few competitors have captured the public awareness like “SNL.” It’s primed to snag its fourth nomination in a row (and is already looking toward a win).
“Drunk History” and “Portlandia” haven’t added any gold to their trophy cases just yet,...
