“I went into television because I hated it so,” the late Fred Rogers famously told CNN in 1999. “I thought there was some way of using this fabulous instrument to be of nurture to those who would watch and listen.”
Twenty-five years after the creator of the groundbreaking “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” said those words, the production company that bears his name is embracing technology to make children’s content easier to watch for a wider swath of young viewers.
In the American Sign Language (Asl) space, for example, Fred Rogers Productions currently offers episodes from “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Donkey Hodie” and “Alma’s Way” that have been fully translated on screen by an Asl interpreter so that hard of hearing or deaf children too young to read can still follow along. These special episodes can be found on YouTube and the PBS Kids app, which streamed them 8.5 million times from July to October.

There won’t be a strike at PBS after all. WGA-represented writers for the public network reached an agreement ahead of their cutoff time midnight on Thursday, TheWrap has learned.
“Thirteen, GBH and PBS SoCal are pleased to have reached an agreement with WGA East,” the stations said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing our work to deliver trusted public media to our audiences.”
The specifics of this agreement were not released.
There are currently 150 freelance writers who work at the three top PBS affiliates. WGA members were asking for fair compensation for writer-producers as well as for made-for-new-media programs be given WGA coverage and for there to be “reasonable residual payments for reuse on streaming services.” However, the biggest story in this particular standoff has to do with animation writers.
The guild asked for animation writers to have full union protections, which would be the first deal of its kind.

Exclusive: Writers at PBS member stations are still hoping to secure a new union contract before the clock strikes midnight on Friday, and the 94-member bargaining unit strengthened its plea ahead of a potential strike with a pledge from more than 200 PBS animation writers who have agreed not to cross their potential picket line.
The WGA East negotiating committee delivered the pledge to PBS management during Wednesday’s talks, just one day before a strike could be called, Deadline has learned.
It is signed by 222 writers across more than 20 animated series that are not currently covered by the Writers Guild of America Public Television Freelance Agreement as a show of solidarity.

When Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson put together the first version of “Minecraft” over a weekend more than a decade ago, he couldn’t have predicted where it would lead.
The game allows players to build, craft, fight and destroy landscapes in their own pixelated worlds. Since its release in 2011, “Minecraft” has become the bestselling video game of all time, selling over 300 million copies and scoring a $2.5 billion acquisition from Microsoft in 2014. It’s spawned an interactive series available on Netflix as well as a live-action movie set for 2025.
As of 2024, roughly 21% of the game’s 170 million monthly active users are aged 15 years or younger — and YouTube videos about “Minecraft” have been streamed on the Alphabet-owned platform more than 1 trillion times.

The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.
The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.
All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.
The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.
Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.
Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.
The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.
Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.

When Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted in 1968, they didn’t just usher in a golden age of puppetry on TV. They also set standards for inclusion and education in children’s programming that the industry is still trying to live up to, decades later. Especially at the studios that launched them.
Developed for Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop), Sesame Street paired producers with educators to create programming designed to support and empower young viewers from lower income and underrepresented backgrounds, and populated its Manhattan-inspired set not only with a colorful menagerie of Jim Henson’s Muppets but also a racially diverse human cast.
Meanwhile, Henson’s friend Fred Rogers, the eponymous creator, host, head writer, lead musical composer and chief puppeteer of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, leaned on the expertise of child psychologists like his own mentor, Margaret McFarland, to help children navigate their feelings, relationships, self-image and curiosities.

Julian Lerner has quite an impressive career for a young teenager. In March of 2021, he was seen in the Netflix family film Yes Day. He’s in the animated series Alma’s Way for PBS, and he’s filming a new movie.
Lerner is currently starring as Brad Hitman on the ABC reboot of The Wonder Years. Brad is 12-year-old Dean’s best friend, who is intelligent and humorous.
On Wonder Years Season 1 Episode 11, Lerner had a major Brad-centric episode, called “Brad Mitzvah,” where Brad grew nervous about his Bar Mitzvah speech.
TV Fanatic chatted with Lerner about this special episode, working with Fred Savage, and the sequel of Netflix’s Yes Day.

Sonia Manzano played Maria on “Sesame Street” for over 40 years, becoming a household name in the U.S. and a trailblazing Latina in the burgeoning public television landscape. Now, Manzano is trading Muppets for the mofongo-loving Alma Rivera, a six-year-old animated Puerto Rican girl of her own invention (and heavily based on her own experience), who lives in the Bronx with her parents, brother and a host of colorful neighbors.
“Alma’s Way” engages directly with viewers as its optimistic and confident protagonist works through challenges and spends time with her diverse friend group, showcasing various aspects of Latin culture, food and music along each episode’s 11-minute trajectory. Co-executive produced by Manzano and Ellen Doherty, chief creative officer of Fred Rogers Productions, and animated by Pipeline Studios, the series hopes to teach children social awareness through the characters’ modeling of empathetic decision-making processes and “Think-Through” moments.
