Jack Soo was the first Asian actor to play an American-born Asian character in a regular television series, Valentine's Day (1964).
His portrayal of Sgt. Nick Yemana in the popular sitcom of the 70's, Barney Miller (1975), set a new standard of hip, witty, deadpan humor, giving world-wide prominence to the Japanese-American wise-cracking detective.
Jack Soo got his first big break when he teamed up with Joey Bishop, playing Bishop's straight man in 1949 for a year and a half, and the duo played Chez Paree in Chicago.
