A shy and mousy little school teacher, Irene Ellliot, is persuaded to marry a wealthy senator to cover up his secret romance with another woman. Irene soon blossoms into a charming and intelligent hostess. The senator falls in love with her and also develops an admiration for her talents as a shrewd backstage politician.
