What is a true crime series without truly outrageous casting?
On the heels of Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem portraying Mary Louise “Kitty” and José Menendez in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming “Monsters” installment, “The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” IndieWire can confirm that Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are taking on another devastating ’90s story: The death of JonBenét Ramsey.
McCarthy and Owen will star as Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, the parents of the six-year-old beauty queen tot who was found murdered in the basement of her family’s home. JonBenét was reported missing only hours before her body was found in 1996. The killer was never caught.
The official series description for the Paramount+ show, currently titled “JonBenét Ramsey,” reads: “The show centers on the Ramsey family, before and after the tragedy, as they go through the painful loss of a child while facing intense public scrutiny caused by...

Australia, already one of the world’s leading inbound production hubs, has increased its Location Offset for international film and TV productions shooting in the country to 30% from the current 16.5%, effective from July 1, 2023.
The news was announced as part of Australia’s 2023-24 national budget by federal treasurer Jim Chalmers.
In 2020 during the early days of the pandemic, Australia topped up its existing schemes with a $270M (A$400M) Location Incentive program, which will now be merged into the Location Offset, also effective July 1.
A recent study by UK-based consultancy Olsberg Spi, commissioned by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and the Australia New Zealand Screen Association (Anzsa), found that Australia’s film and television incentives contributed a total of $11.4Bn (A$16.5Bn) to the country’s economic output for the four years to the 20201/22 financial year.

Australia, already one of the world’s biggest hubs for international film and TV production, has increased and streamlined the ‘Location Offset’ scheme that is at the heart of its ability to attract runaway productions.
The Location Offset will be increased from its current 16.5% rebate of Australian qualifying production spend, to 30%. At the same time a discretionary 13.5% grant scheme will be merged into the offset system. Both changes are effective from July 1.
The moves were announced on Wednesday as part of the 2023-24 national budget by federal treasurer Jim Chalmers. His decision involves the injection of an additional A$112 million ($76.2 million) into the system over the next four years.
(Separately, A$286 million [$195 million] over five years will go to Creative Australia and on to four new arts bodies: a First Nations led body, Music Australia, Writers Australia and Creative Workplaces. A further A$535 million [$364 million] will go to nine museums and art...

Australia’s film and television incentives contributed a total of 11.4Bn (A16.5Bn) to the country’s economic output for the four years to the 20201/22 financial year, according to a study by UK-based consultancy Olsberg Spi.
The report also found that Australia’s offset programs underpin its standing as a major production hub. In 20201/22, total production expenditure in Australia grew to more than 1.5Bn (A2.2Bn), an increase of 91 over the four years studied.
Major productions to shoot in Australia over the past four years include Disney’s Thor: Love And Thunder, Universal’s Ticket To Paradise, Woody Woodpecker and Metropolis, Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla vs Kong 2 and Netflix shows Heartbreak High, Pieces Of Her and God’s Favorite Idiot.
Drilling down into the various incentives, the report found that Australia’s 16.5 Location Offset, geared towards offshore film and TV productions, resulted in a 4 (A5.89) return for every A1 invested through the program.

“Bad Behaviour” is a family affair in more ways than one. It centers on mother Lucy and daughter Dylan, both of whom work in the entertainment industry. Alice Englert (“Ginger & Rosa”), who wrote, directed, and stars as Dylan, would know a little something about that — she’s Jane Campion’s daughter. The “Power of the Dog” auteur even makes a cameo in the film.
Though “Bad Behaviour” is playfully meta, it’s not needlessly self-referential. Englert separates herself as a filmmaker with this screwy tale of modern narcissism (although she and her mother do both have a thing for guru characters). “Bad Behaviour” is bright and lively (not Campion’s wheelhouse) but, like its characters, it’s also aimless.
Englert clearly wants to say something meaningful about mothers, daughters, acting, female celebrity, social-media culture, spirituality, and mental health, but she’s not yet deft enough to tackle all of these things at once.

Melissa McCarthy revealed how the “birds and bees” talk with her teenage daughter took an awkward turn.
The “Bridesmaids” actress was a guest on Glennon Doyle’s podcast, “We Can Do Hard Things“, where she shared how she talks about sex and relationships with her daughters,15-year-old Vivian and 12-year-old Georgette.
“Like, we’ve had the talk, which I did incredibly awkwardly because I knew it was gonna come,” McCarthy explained. “I always thought, ‘I’m gonna do it so early because we’re open about anything and they can come to me for anything.’ But there is still a midwestern former Catholic person that’s like, ‘Talk about sex and a lightning bolt comes down.'”

After four record-breaking weeks, Stranger Things was dethroned from the No. 1 spot in Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
Another Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, took the lead for the week of June 20-26. Its third season premiered June 22, and the show racked up 2.45 billion minutes of viewing time for the week. That was just enough to push Stranger Things (2.33 billion minutes, down from 2.95 billion a week earlier) down to second place.
It may just be a one-week hiatus at No. 1 for Stranger Things, however, as the final two episodes of season four debuted on July 1 and will be included in the next set of Nielsen rankings.

“Stranger Things” continues to rule in its third week of availability, as Nielsen’s latest Top 10 streaming rankings — for the week of June 13 through June 19 — showed it on top of the charts with nearly 3 billion minutes of viewing.
As the binge subsides, that’s a dip from the previous week’s 4.2 billion minutes (and week one’s 7.2 billion minutes broke Nielsen’s record for the most-viewed title in a single week). It’s sure to continue to come back down to earth — until measurement begins to include viewership of the show’s final two episodes, which dropped on July 1. That’s likely to rocket the show back up — thanks to Volume 2’s combined four hours.
As previously noted, included in Nielsen’s measurement of the week are the nine hours that make up Season 4 Volume 1, which debuted May 27 on Netflix, as well as all three previous seasons.
Meanwhile, rocketing to No.

Netflix juggernaut Stranger Things could not be dislodged from the top spot in Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming rankings.
Powered by the premiere of the first seven Season 4 episodes on May 27, the series collected 2.95 billion minutes of viewing for the week of June 13 to 19, its fourth outing with billions of minutes of streaming. Peaky Blinders ascended to the No. 2 slot following the release of its final season on Netflix (it’s a BBC show in the U.K. but a Netflix original in the United States). Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy” has surpassed “Stranger Things” as the globally most-viewed English-language series on Netflix this week. The Emmy-nominated series starring Elliot Page and Tom Hopper took the top spot ahead of the release of “Stranger Things” Season 4, Vol. 2 this Friday.
Since its Season 3 premiere on June 22, “The Umbrella Academy” has racked up 124,530,000 viewing hours, while “Stranger Things” Season 4 had 76,910,000 hours viewed this week. “The Umbrella Academy” topped the U.S. charts, as well, pushing the final season of the Mille Bobby Brown–led thriller to second place.
One thing is clear: Audiences want more of “The Umbrella Academy.” But despite the series’ growing fandom, showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap that it’s possible the series comes to its conclusion at the end of the next season.
“I think if we got to Season 4, it would be a great ending for the run of the show,” Blackman revealed.

According to data newly released by Netflix, Season 4 “Stranger Things” was viewed for 883.3 million hours between its May 27 debut and June 19. It became the streamer’s most popular English-language season of all time last week, breaking the record previously set by “Bridgerton” Season 2, but has not yet usurped South Korean drama “Squid Game” to become the most popular season overall. Netflix calculates its Most Popular list based on hours viewed during a title’s first 28 days of availability, and “Squid Game” sits in the No. 1 position with over 1.6 billion hours viewed. Given that the most recent numbers account for 24 days of viewing, it’s presumable that “Stranger Things” Season 4 won’t be able to beat “Squid Game” just yet.
But the show is still running up that hill. The two episodes that make up Volume 2 of “Stranger Things” Season 4 will debut on July 1, resetting the clock so that the season...

It's good to be bad sometimes. Leslie Bibb knows that to be true after stepping into Satan's shoes for Netflix's new series, God's Favorite Idiot. And, in an interview with E! News, Bibb revealed that she felt "lucky" to land the role, as "villains are fun." "I was like, 'Wait, are you punking me?'" Bibb said when she learned that she could possibly play the ruler of Hell in a Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy-led apocalyptic workplace comedy. "'I don't think I even have to read it.'" She did ultimately read the scripts, resulting in her "laughing so hard" and panicking that the casting directors would go in a different direction....

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone's love story is one for the ages. The friends turned lovers share a swoon-worthy meet-cute that would make for an epic rom-com. The talented pair of actors have taken their real-life spark into reel life and lit up many Hollywood projects, having shared screens in titles like "Bridesmaids," "Spy," and Netflix's latest unique rom-com, "God's Favorite Idiot." In fact, the two love working together so much that you can almost always count on a Falcone cameo in the actress's work, much like spotting a brief appearance by the beloved comic book writer Stan Lee in the MCU.

In a nondescript house on a nondescript block in Burbank, California, a “pathologically honest” man named Clark (Ben Falcone) feeds his cats dinner. One won’t come inside, so he heads to his backyard to retrieve it. Instead of finding his cat, he’s struck by lightning from what appears to be a magic cloud. Little does he know that the cloud was sent directly from Heaven and that he has been chosen as a messenger for God.

Comedy mogul Jerry Seinfeld has taken a crack at directing at least four times in his career, from an episode of his beloved “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” to specials for comedian Colin Quinn.
Now, Seinfeld is getting back into the director’s chair to direct his very first narrative feature, and it’s about the history of how, of all things, one of America’s favorite sugary breakfast snacks came to be.
“Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” is directed by Seinfeld, who also co-wrote the film with Spike Feresten, Andy Robin, and Barry Marder. It’s set in Michigan 1963, when Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen — according to Netflix — “Unfrosted” stars Seinfeld as well along with a stacked ensemble of comedy favorites.

A partnership with Melissa McCarthy — one of the defining comic talents of the past 10-plus years — might seem like the sort of thing a streamer would want to spotlight and celebrate. So it’s surprising that “God’s Favorite Idiot,” a new comedy series on Netflix, dropped without ever been having made available to critics in advance.
Surprising, that is, to those without familiarity with the breadth of McCarthy’s oeuvre. In addition to highs like “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” the performer has made an escalatingly disastrous series of movies directed by her husband Ben Falcone, including “The Boss,” “Life of the Party,” and “Superintelligence.” Falcone and McCarthy’s creative partnership makes a crystalline case for allowing someone from outside the family into the making of art; together, their work is slackly paced and meagerly plotted. “God’s Favorite Idiot,” created by Falcone (with both spouses credited as...

What if the fate of the world depended on a mid-level tech support employee? That’s the question of Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone’s new Netflix comedy, God’s Favorite Idiot. Falcone’s Clark realizes that God has bigger plans for him once he starts glowing. Along with his crush Amily (McCarthy), their coworkers, and angelic allies, he must outwit Satan herself (Leslie Bibb). The series also serves as a Gilmore Girls reunion of sorts as Yanic Truesdale (Michel Gerard!) stars alongside his former Dragonfly Inn coworker McCarthy, playing of those angels, Chamuel. Here, he introduces his character and talks about that reunion. I love your character’s entrance. Talk about reading that in the script. Yanic Truesdale: I have to say, my manager, when he saw the thing, said, “I believe this is one of the greatest entrances in Hollywood history.” [Laughs] It is a good one. I cannot lie.

"I can feel you flowing through!!" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a new comedy series titled God's Favorite Idiot, the latest creation from the husband-wife comedy duo Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone. Usually Falcone directs McCarthy in Hollywood comedies but this time he stars as the main character in this workplace comedy about what would happen if he suddenly started glowing after being struck by lightning. In God's Favorite Idiot, Mid level Tech support employee Clark Thompson finds love with co-worker Amily Luck at exactly the same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God. There's also roller skating, a lake of fire and an apocalypse, too. This looks like they went all out with the religious imagery. What could be a “reasonable explanation” for a person to glow? That’s one of the questions posed in the God’s Favorite Idiot trailer. Netflix has unveiled a new look at its upcoming comedy starring Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy, and the world’s least likely hero is about to become God’s Favorite Idiot. “I saw something crazy last night, and I do want to just be completely open and honest: Yes, I did cocaine twice last week, but I did zero cocaine preceding the event I’m about to describe,” Amily (McCarthy) says when she walks into work. Clark (Falcone) was glowing, she reveals, adding, “I also accidentally roofied myself last night, too, but I don’t know if that’s really relevant.” Watch the trailer below for more, including the Gilmore Girls reunion with McCarthy and Yanic Truesdale and the four horsemen — or rather, horsepeople — of the apocalypse.

A higher power is calling upon Ben Falcone to do some good in God’s Favorite Idiot, the latest comedy from the actor-creator and Melissa McCarthy that drops June 15 on Netflix. The streamer has unveiled the first trailer for the series (see above).
Here’s the logline for the comedy: “Clark Thompson (Falcone) is a mid-level tech support employee, who takes saunas with his dad, Gene (Kevin Dunn), pines after his co-worker Amily (McCarthy), and loves his cats. When he starts to glow, he begins to realize this isn’t an average day at the office and God has bigger plans for him. Ben Falcone is the Chosen One. On Friday, Netflix released the trailer for its upcoming comedy series “God’s Favorite Idiot,” in which Falcone stars alongside his wife Melissa McCarthy.
The series follows Falcone’s Clark Thompson, a mid-level tech support employee, who takes saunas with his dad, Gene (Kevin Dunn), pines after his co-worker Amily (McCarthy), and loves his cats. When he starts to glow, he begins to realize this isn’t an average day at the office and God has bigger plans for him.
In the trailer, which you can watch above, Clark is struck by lightning — and Amily witnesses it. The next day, she races to work to tell their co-workers what happened.
“I saw something crazy last night, and I do want to just be completely open and honest,” she says. “Yes, I did cocaine twice last week, but I did zero cocaine preceding the event I’m about to describe.

The Illuminati? So out of fashion. Comedian Mike Myers turns his focus on farcical secret society the Pentaverate in a new Netflix series of the same name. The series premieres May 5.

The six-episode series also stars Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar, Lydia West, and Richard McCabe. Jennifer Saunders will also do double duty as a brother and sister duo. Rob Lowe and Maria Menounos will also make special appearances, and Jeremy Irons serves as narrator.
