The fifth short in the series, Magnum Opus, is the very first Marvel Studios production to ever receive a G rating from the MPA.
I Am Groot premiered with five shorts on Disney+ on August 10, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. An additional five shorts are in development.
James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, stated that despite his being an executive producer in the series, it would not contradict or cross over into his Guardians of the Galaxy movies. This was seen in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 (2023) where Groot is shown to be an adolescent while season 2 of I Am Groot still shows an infant Groot.
