Dagdi Chawl 2 (2022) :
Brief Review -
The rocks of Chawl collapse due to the abstract structure of outdated gangster theories. Marathi cinema was having a gala time from 2014 to 2016, with many movies becoming box office hits and popular amongst the masses. Post Duniyadari, we had films like Timepass, Lai Bhari, Lokmanya, Timepass 2, Natsamrat, Classmates, and Sairat doing good business at the box office. Chandrakant Kanse's 'Dagdi Chawl' (2015) came as a surprise because Marathi cinema had not seen a massy gangster film on such a scale, and the box office success in this genre was rare too. Of course, the curiosity about Arun Gawli's story amongst audiences helped the film collect good numbers despite its average content. This time, we've lost our curiosity, and our average content and storytelling are stuck in the same frame of mind as in 2015. Kanse's gangster drama is a proper sequel, even though we know the fact that the fictional amount of writing is greater than the actual story and characters. The rocks of the chawl aren't concrete at all. It's a weak script already, but the excessive use of outdated gangster drama theories burys the entire wall even before it is built. Surya and Daddy's friendship was known to everybody, and even a KG student knows the enemity between these two will never make sense. How did Kanse even think that those 2 decades old tricks will work now? The days of Satya, Vaastav and the Shootout Series are gone. We can't call them contemporary films by any chance. Dagdi Chawl may have worked 10 years ago, in 2012, when Marathi cinema was missing hard-core action mass films. For 2022, it's a big mistake. Everything is a letdown, from the performances to the writing, screenplay, music, and direction. Only that background score works. SHAMBHO...!!! Arjun Rampal's "Daddy" was much better than this.
