I went to this movie with absolutely no expectations, Arya isn't that big an actor,The director hasn't made any exceptional movies, and so on.
But the movie was really good.It showed a great deal of teamwork and effort, and more importantly it was all well used and portrayed.
Chennai portrayed to the best as in the year 1947. The heroine - Amy Jackson is beautiful and has done a really wonderful job.Her eyes show lots of experience, for a girl of her age.
The story line is similar to that of Lagaan, and many scenes remind you of both lagaan and Rang de basanti, yet the movie has its own originality and inspiration.
Arya isn't portrayed as a hero who fights for freedom,he is portrayed as one who fights for Love.
Editing was awesome, Direction was good. The only negative point of the movie is the songs and BGM. songs don't get in sync with the movie too well. BGM isn't much original and doesn't give the full effect at various scenes.
Still overall the movie is watchable. The reason i rated it 8 was because of the good acting, direction, screenplay,no unwanted comedy or action or songs, and mainly because there was some originality/reality in showing a historic adventure.( something that Ayirathil oruvan lacked ).
The movie may seem a bit lengthy, but don't worry cause it wont bore you out.
Overall - Good movie( don't miss it)

To me, it's definitely one of the best romantic period flicks in Tamil that I have seen till now. Acting of Arya, Emy Jackson, MS Baskar & Nasser was a highlight and it caught the attention. Moreover it's definitely the best movie that AL Vijay has got to direct till now! Some of the romantic scenes were too good and it made me cry in multiple scenes. Background Music and Songs from GV Prakash were also very good. I really enjoyed watching this movie and it will be in my heart for a very long time.

This movie has everything to be enjoyed, especially wen i saw the movie for first time i was surprised to see that even Tamil cinema has the talent to make movies like this. The background scenes of old madras and costumes designing and many more things are outstanding in this movie. Its a great family entertainment and a movie which has to be really appreciated. This movie is just a new milestone in Tamil cinema. Amy Jackson steals the show with great performance of Arya. The movie has everything, patriotism, Romance, Comedy and of course Action- the wrestling. It gives you an essence of old madras and present Chennai in a very beautiful way. Well, this movie is something which will always have its impact for the movie lovers in Tamil cinema. Watch this movie without missing a single scene and this will be the best movie of the season.
Very very expectant movie. enthusiastic. marvelous love story. songs are very superb & awesome. asking to hear more and more. lyrics also breaking point. after a long time good love story among mega superstars. stunning performance. i have refer nearly more than 50 persons to view the movie. even me too take it 10 times. also need more to taste.
Indian titanic especially south Indian. after "uyire" movie this film made sensation. don't miss .
i don't have any other words to say...
Madharasapattinam-True that the love and emotions we hold for someone when in the presence of him/her is an extra ordinary sense that GOD has created in us.But something which is more divine is the feeling which we have towards them in the same magnitude or even greater when our mind and heart knows the fact that they are away or even out of our lives.A Sweet romantic story well told and well captured in the backdrop of Indian independence.Amy Jackson is cute lovely and beautiful and has shown good acting talents.Einstein's theory proved yet again by by making you feel the otherwise lengthy first half not so lengthy at all (Let his soul rest in peace). has done a decent job.the movie is well supported by almost all the one in the acting crew.the end was great and emotional.the movie would have been awesome if director had taken bit more care on the graphical end and with the replacement of the horrible background score...and also the the portrayal of Chennai in 1940s was a disappointment....anyways Madharasapattinam is worth a watch

Fabulous Love Movie Of All Time A Must Watch Flim To Everyone Atleast Once In Our Lifetime a Finest Love Flim Of The Century.
Madrasapattinam is the good product of director Vijay. The director along with the art director & CG ppl has done a great work on recreating old madras which does not feel odd in any scene in the movie..
period movies are very rare in Tamil movie industry. The director & the producer has got the guts to take up a period movie genre to show the love story. yes..though the movie is set in pre-independence era, this has got nothing to do with the independence & freedom fights..its a pure love story..
Arya is at his best..U can believe that he is a wrestler in this movie..no six-packs syndrome.. :) he is good at delivering subtle comedy also..Heroine Amy emotes well in the screen..she looks gorgeous and suits her role good..
the next best thing in the movie is casting..Nasser, bala singh, MS baskar, Jeeva, Balaji and last but best haneefa..everybody done their part well..
This movie is more of a musical flick than love..Composer GV has done a great job in songs and RR..One can feel that this movie lacks dialogue and RR fills it most of the time..
Its a great meal to Nirav shah, the cinematographer of this movie..he has already proved himself with his great work in the movies like Sarvam, Oram po etc..He has done a fantastic job throughout the movie..
The art direction plays a major role in the movie..Madrasapattinam is not a fantasy..one could not cheat the audience by showing some imaginary places...every old place in chennai has got proof..and the art dept did not cheat us.. :) This is the only movie in which the audience were still at theater for the end credits..thanks to the old-new madras fotos..
Verdict : Good , big & rich attempt by Vijay..and a must watch movie..

No big speculation,no big cast, not a great technical crew, not an intelligent director..but the product is simply superb. It was delightful to see the movie Madharasapattinam, directed by Vijay. Its was Romance/History genre, for a change. The highlight of the movie are the stars Arya and Amy.The former came up and decent acting..and the other had a delightful smile and looks which you won't forget for a week.... The other important aspect of the movie was the music by G.V.Prakash..Both the Bgm and songs was tremendous..Pookal Pookum and Kaatrile was awesome number...... The dialogues of the movie was also quite good, like "400 Varusathukapram Thirupi Adikirom!"-MS.Bhaskar..the comedies was also good and came with the track of the movie... The disappointing factor is the impacts of the moovie Titanic in it.The Question is are we guys gone out of brains to have some originality in our movies!!! Otherwise its good movie to watch, and i highly recommend to watch it on screens, especially for GV and Amy!!!

I have watched it 4 times in the last week, and I still feel to watch it again. I don't know why! Lovely Amy, Bold acting of Arya, talented direction of Vijay, amazing background sounds, all the well-played supporting roles- which is the main point to mention in particular?!
A great Love tragedy, 1945! If a person having a bit of love in his heart, he must feel how tragic the full love story is! Love, fight for love, fight, fight, fight, and then finally a bold sacrifice for the sake of love! It's always meant to be ended with some tears in your eyes, may be a burst if you are alone!
However, Amy Jackson did exceptionally well throughout the movie. I am amazed not only with her beauty but also with her acting. But, to be honest, I must say, what a pretty Lady she is!
Arya as the lead actor played so well that you will easily realize it. All the supporting casts did very very well I bet. In short, this is a superb movie based on a touchy love story. I loved it.

Period films have been sporadic in Tamil cinema for the past two decades and not many directors are daring enough to give a fling at such genres. But the young director Vijay breaks the mould and comes up with an artistic portrayal of pre-independence Madras. In fact, he succeeds in his attempt with utmost ease.
The plot of "Madarasapattanam" is quite simple. It deals with the romance between a brawny Madarasi wrestler and an aristocratic English belle at a time when the Freedom Movement was at its pinnacle. Arya, as the young wrestler (Parithi) is impeccable. His penchant for offbeat roles is evident from his choice of movies. Amy Jackson, as the royal damsel (Amy) allures you with her innocent and snowy charm. The way she has acclimatized to the Indian pattern of film making is quite amazing. Kochi Haneefa, who plays Amy's interpreter, manages to tickle you in his typical style. All the actors including Nasser (Parithi's father), M.S.Bhaskar, RJ Balaji (tourist guide), Jeeva (of Lollu Sabha fame), Kumaravel (taxi-driver) and the actors who play Parithi's friends make their presence felt.
The narration smoothly swaps between the modern day Chennai and the 1940's Madras. Thanks to some crisp editing by Antony. Cinematographer Nirav Shah guides us through a virtual tour through the streets of vintage Madras. It is fascinating to see the Madras of the yore adorned by trams, bullock-carts, the crystal-clear Cooum, the dhobi ghats of Washermanpet, and a busy Buckingham Canal! Art Director Selva has to be commended for recreating the yesteryear Spencer's and the Central Station. But at times the back-drops seem to be like wallpapers, which could have been avoided. G.V.Prakash Kumar seems to have inherited a lot from his uncle (A.R.Rahman) which is very much evident in his "Pookal Pookum" number. And his background score blends well with the period flavour of the movie. Vijay's dialogues are note-worthy.
Traces of "Lagaan" and "Titanic" can be felt here and there. Especially, the wrestling match between Parithi and the Englishman, and the aged Amy searching her love with the necklace ('thaali') reminds you of the yesteryear classics. Nevertheless, Vijay manages to trigger the spirit of Madras by showcasing the rich cultural and historical heritage of our city in this poignant love story. He leaves us yearning for the glorious Madras of the past.
A must-watch for all Chennaiites. Come, and cherish the vintage Madras.- Deepak Kumaar Manoharan.

"Madrasapattinam" suffers a lot by comparison with the original 2005 Hindi movie "Kisna: The Warrior Poet", and for someone who has watched the original Hindi movie, it is hard to not make comparisons. It is difficult to understand why does Amy love the hero and what does the hero find in her, except their physical attributes: in the case of Kisna, that's beautifully shown in the form of poetry, playful humour (which is completely absent here) and a true tension with not only the independence of India but the violence that is unleashed as a result. More importantly, it's a local landlord who's behind the girl there, not an English officer, which seems over the top here.
The Tamil movie also suffers from too much melodrama, too many long songs, too epic a scale for something not deserving that, and too stilted acting performances: while the Hindi movie also didn't have great acting except from Oberoi, here the cast is terrible uniformly. There are too many dialogues of us (Indians) vs. them (Britishers): the film forgets that nationalism is its background and romance ought to be to the fore. The only place where this movie scores over its original is its ending: I wouldn't reveal what it is, but it is much better than Kisna's contrived ending which had the audience in splits (and one of the main reasons that Kisna failed at the box office).
I wonder what this movie could have been with an actor like Dhanush and with fewer songs, less action and less nationalism: it would have been as good as Kisna, which was a very good film.

Madrasapattinam is a movie which expresses the innocent unconditional love between the main characters along with some good comedy and with a lot of love.
And its not just love there are fun and serious parts too in this film The pacing is good in this movie and the story is just amazing, it makes the viewers to emphasize the pain of love and its really painful to see the things they have to do to save each other
GV prakash gave one of his best albums to this movie, great background score.
And this movie make me realize that madrasapattinam (Now, its called as chennai) was better looking and beautiful place than chennai
every single actors from main characters to the supporting characters did their part well
and every single time the ending of this film leaves me with tears..
