The Dark Universe was dead on arrival. So let’s look back at this bungled attempt at creating a cinematic universe and find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy.
The Mummy franchise started in 1932 with a film that starred the legendary Boris Karloff. He played Imhotep, an Ancient Egyptian high priest who was buried alive for attempting to resurrect the love of his life. Returned to life thousands of years later,...

Gary Sinise is opening up about how his political beliefs have impacted his career in Hollywood.
The actor, who is best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Lt. Dan in 1994’s Forrest Gump, spoke to Chris Wallace on Friday’s episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?.
Sinise has been publicly open about his political views, even starting Friends of Abe, a conservative group for Hollywood figures, in 2004. When asked if conservatives in the entertainment industry needed a support group, the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders actor laughed in response, saying it was formed “during the early days of the Iraq War.”
“I think so much was motivated by…what happened to our Vietnam veterans and the lack of support that they got and the way they were treated, and then we regretted it later on,” he added. “I didn’t want our Iraq War and Afghanistan veterans to fall...

If you see just one thriller this year in which a climactic car chase is followed by the director-star breaking character to deliver a five-minute sermon straight into the camera — followed by three more minutes of Mike Huckabee leading viewers in prayer to accept Jesus into their hearts, before the end credits roll — then make it “Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist,” the latest in a series of apocalyptic films based on the bestselling Christian book series.
Although “Rise” is the sixth feature derived from dozens of rapture-iffic novels and spinoff novellas published under the “Left Behind” banner in the mid-’90s through mid-2000s, it’s the first in the film series to have Kevin Sorbo as a leading man as well as director. Where past installments were relatively coy about their evangelistic purpose, Sorbo opts to add a literal come-to-Jesus epilogue. You may recall that the last actor...

A day after Sundance juror Marlee Matlin walked out of the premiere of “Magazine Dreams” in protest, along with the rest of the festival jury, the Oscar winner talked in-depth about the importance of open captions on film. Speaking at the Variety and Stacy’s Pita Chip Rise brunch, an event celebrating female creators on Jan. 21, Matlin passionately advocated for better inclusive storytelling.
When asked about her work on the 2022 best picture winner “Coda” (which swept the 2021 Sundance fest as well), Matlin stressed the lengths her film took to embrace all fans of cinema. “The film was open caption, the entire film, so you couldn’t just turn it off and on,” Matlin told Variety Senior Entertainment Writer Angelique Jackson. “For me, it made me feel very included, because I could sit and watch the film with everyone reacting the same way, the same time, feeling the same emotions. Being a character in an Evil Dead movie has never looked like a walk in the park. Either you’re getting possessed by spirits and returning as a bile-spewing Deadite, or you’re being taunted by your murdered loved ones and driven insane across the course of a seemingly-endless night. And yet, even by the standards of Sam Raimi presents a fresh take on the terrifying tome, taking the series out of the woods and relocating it to an LA apartment where evil forces wreak havoc on a family already facing metaphorical demons.
As its properly gnarly, chainsaw-revving, cheese-grater-wielding, glass-swallowing trailer makes clear, Cronin’s film is not holding back – and neither does the director as he breaks down the trailer’s delights in a brand new Empire interview. “The trailer is really indicative of what the experience of the movie is like,” he promises. “I can say that with quite a bit of confidence.

Amazon Prime Video‘s new dramedy TV series “As We See It,” which had its eight-episode debut season drop in January, follows three 20-something roommates on the autism spectrum as they strive to navigate the highs and lows of life in a world that eludes them. The series hits close to home for creator/showrunner Jason Katims, as he himself has a son in his twenties who is on the spectrum, living independently and going through some of the same struggles as the characters on the show. “There’s less that you hear, read and know about autism in adulthood than you do [about it] in childhood and adolescence,” Katims tells Gold Derby as he discusses the intention behind creating the series (watch the exclusive video interview above).

"When one person in the family scores, the whole family scores." Disney has revealed an official trailer for an inspirational true story basketball movie titled Rise, from Nigerian filmmaker Akin Omotoso. "Audiences have never seen a story like that of [this family]." Based on the real story about the family that produced the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions in the history of the league. Originally from Nigeria, their parents moved to Greece where they struggled to make ends meet on the streets of Athens - until three of their kids became basketball stars and eventually got drafted into the NBA. Rise stars Dayo Okeniyi & Yetide Badaki as the parents, Charles & Vera, with Uche Agada as Giannis, Ral Agada as Thanasis, and Jaden Osimuwa as Kostas.

Quality film trilogies are hard to come by. In the more than 10 years since the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was first released, spawning two nearly-perfect sequels in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “War for the Planet of the Apes,” it’s hard to think of other enduring franchises that have been able to pack in coherent storylines, with a satisfying ending to boot, as successfully as the sci-fi action series.
Apes fans will be happy to know that the entire trilogy in 4K Uhd is 44 off on Amazon right now, bringing down the price for all three films to only 25. The 4K upgrade, which was first introduced on Blu-ray in 2017, is particularly helpful in making up for the films’ famously dark lighting — in higher resolution,...

Early success can be a blessing and a curse. Most child actors hoping to transition to more mature roles face an uphill battle, and it can be hard to coax audiences out of the cognitive dissonance of seeing established baby-faced performers as fully fledged adults.
Fortunately, “Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the titular role in the mega-hit Disney musical, doesn’t have that problem — though she may need a little help reminding people who she is. She’s not worried, though. Still, fans of the fearless Hawaiian princess may be surprised by her latest big on-camera role: a scrappy tomboy who rides a skateboard in Hulu’s new queer rom-com “Crush.”
Led by an all LGBTQ creative team that consists of writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham and director Sammi Cohen, “Crush” is a charming queer rom-com for the Disney Channel generation. The movie stars “Girl Meets World” lead Rowan Blanchard as Paige,...

Exclusive: Will Peltz (Unfriended), Sarah Dumont (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and Sydelle Noel (Glow) have signed on to star alongside Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Katherine Hughes and Josh Plasse in the horror-thriller Man’s Son, with Voltage Pictures coming aboard to launch international sales ahead of the upcoming Marché du Film.
The XYZ Films title from director Remy Grillo centers on a young couple (Hughes and Plasse) hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. When they choose an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality, until they find themselves intertwined in an occult, sinister plot led by King and Grillo’s characters.
Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the script, which is inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert, with production to kick off in Yucca Valley, California this month.

Jamie xx is back with “Let’s Do It Again,” his first original solo release in two years – and he’s picking up right where he left off.
“I started making this tune last year, just as it felt like we might all be able to start doing the things we love again,” he shared in a statement. The track’s skittering tempo ricochets across a nearly four-minute run time as “Let’s Do It Again” builds around the hypnotic, euphoric sentiment of being high on love.
