Lets face it: you already know whether youre going to like this movie or not from the title alone, right? The Asylum Mega- franchise has garnered itself a fair number of fans over the past few years, with high-brow classics such as Mega Piranha and last years super-popular Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus doing the business for Syfy’s viewership by providing an ultra-cheap form of entertainment enjoyed more for its laughable acting and special effects than its stellar writing or innovative filmmaking.
The plot comes straight out of Piranha, with once-thought-extinct goblin sharks emerging from cracks left in the ocean floor after a number of earthquakes, resulting in a flash tsunami that covers the west coast of America with high water, including the titular Malibu. Someone at Warner Premiere, the now obsolete company behind Lost Boys: The Tribe and Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective, is responsible for depriving audiences of a Deep Blue Sea sequel. Not just any sequel, but an Aliens-esque sequel involving pirates, Navy Seals, and weaponized sharks. The movie, which Jack Perez (Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus) was hired to write […]

For those who stopped watching The Walking Dead after it turned into a soap opera in season 2, rejoice because we finally have a real alternative in Syfy's Z Nation. Not only does it have some great writing, it also has all the gore us hardcore fans love and the balls to kill off major characters mid season. I hate TV but I've been watching this steadily since it's premier and Quiet Earth highly recommends it.
Z Nation is made by The Asylum, the company famous for making cheap ripoffs of upcoming major films and getting them out on DVD before the major one sees a theatrical release. They're also behind the Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus style films and the even more ridiculous Sharknado. (Don't worry, there's a whole Znado episode of Z Nation, and yes, it's awesome.)

After seeing Cassie Scerbo’s fantastic performance in Sharknado I made it a point to track down and watch anything new movie she was in, which coupled with the ridiculous new re-titling (this film originally aired on Us television as Beasts of the Bering Sea), made Damn Sea Vampires! a must-watch. It doesn’t hurt that the film is also helmed by cinematographer Don E. FauntLeRoy – who cut his directorial teeth on two Anaconda sequels and a handful of Steven Seagal movies, including one of the star best post-2005 flicks, Renegade Justice (a personal fave).

Nope, you didn’t read that heading wrong. Despite sharing a similar title to That Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Shark is not a rip-roaring archaeological adventure, instead it’s the latest in a long line of creature-feature movies that have, for what seems like eons now, been a mainstay of the Syfy channel (see Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Sharknado, Swamp Shark et al).
Four friends set out by boat for an idyllic vacation on a private, remote island. But unknown to them, a weaponized shark has escaped from a top secret military lab nearby, a shark that was genetically engineered with hate in its blood, and programmed to hunt any human within range. Now, these friends must band together to battle an all new brand of predator who will stop at nothing to remain at the top of the food chain.

It's the bad-movie franchise that Twitter built. When Sharknado – the saga of a man, his chainsaw and a bunch of poorly CGI'd sharks flying through the air in L.A. – aired on Syfy last year, it became a surprise social-network sensation, racking up enough mentions to compete with the likes of Game of Thrones. Suddenly the Asylum, the production house known for direct-to-video knockoffs like Transmorphers and Syfy schlock like Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, had a hit on its hands. The sequel, which debuted tonight, had an expensive NYC setting,...

One of the biggest pieces of news from San Diego Comic-Con 2013 was that Man of Steel 2 will feature Batman. Not only that, but Batman fighting Superman. Two of the most iconic comic book characters ever. In the same movie. Fighting each other. This is marvellous! (Marvel-ous? This...Is...DC!)
The question is, what will the title be?
ComicBook.com reports screenwriter David S. Goyer saying that:
“...the next film we're making, we're already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015 and it's – we're actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it's – that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that's happening.”
Rather than going for the obvious choices, like:
Man of Steel 2: With Added Batman (variant: Man of Steel 2: With Added Bats)
or
Man of Steel 2: The Man of Steel Fights the Man...

The Golden Gate Bridge celebrated its opening on May 27, 1937, and it seems like Hollywood has been doing its damndest to close the thing down ever since. The nearly two-mile-long wonder that connects California's San Francisco to Marin County has been the target of many ruthless attacks throughout movie history, from the earthquakes that might one day actually destroy the bridge to your garden variety monsters.
There's plenty of the latter on display in Guillermo del Toro monster mash "Pacific Rim," which eschews the typical landmark stomping of Kaiju movies … with the notable exception of pointy-headed beast laying waste to the Golden Gate in the film's opening prologue. Guess the temptation was too hard to resist, eh, Guillermo?

Life of Pi; Bait; The Oranges
Even as Ang Lee's Life of Pi (2012, Fox, PG) picked up Oscars for direction, cinematography, music and, crucially, visual effects, there was disgruntlement among the VFX effects team that their work on the movie had not been sufficiently recognised. Certainly, the digital wizardry is extraordinary, making the audience believe that they have been cast adrift on an endless ocean with a man-eating tiger, putting us right there in the lifeboat with the story's titular hero. All the more tragic, then, that Rhythm & Hues, which provided so much of the film's computer graphic magic, had filed for bankruptcy just before the Oscars, the latest victim of a downward spiral that had seen VFX artists become the most important but least valued craftspeople in Hollywood.
The irony, of course, is that visual effects are often at their best when unnoticed, and the real triumph of Life of Pi...
Even as Ang Lee's Life of Pi (2012, Fox, PG) picked up Oscars for direction, cinematography, music and, crucially, visual effects, there was disgruntlement among the VFX effects team that their work on the movie had not been sufficiently recognised. Director: Jack Perez. Review: Adam Wing. When you’re presented with a movie called ‘Some Guy Who Kills People’, a film directed by Jack Perez, the man behind Wild Things 2 and Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, hopes (quite naturally) aren’t high. From executive producer John Landis (American Werewolf in London), Some Guy stars Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick and our very own Lucy Davis (The Office). Low expectations can be a blessing in disguise but I should’ve had more faith because Some Guy is a darkly comic, ever-so-slightly stupid horror comedy with emphasis very much on the ‘c’ word. Ken Boyd (Corrigan) is a small-town loner who likes to draw, making ends meet at the local ice-cream parlour. Fresh out the loony bin, where he spent several years recovering from the horrific torture he suffered at the hands of the high school basketball jocks, Ken just wants to be left alone.

It really goes without saying but the main event this week is of course the new Bond movie, Skyfall. There’s not even a crappy looking Rom-Com or third-rate animation out this week I can hilariously pretend is ‘the one we’ve all being waiting for’, like I have done so many times before.
The studios have quite wisely decided not to risk putting any other major releases up against Sam Mendes’ 007 and considering it’s one of the most hyped films of the year and is buoyed by universally glowing reviews, it looks set to be all-conquering at the box office over the weekend.
Of last week’s offerings it was, as expected, Madagascar 3 : Europe’s Most Wanted which stormed to the top of the pile, taking in a whopping £6million in its opening weekend. With half term approaching, it will likely experience another boost in sales...

Produced by John Landis, this low-budget semi-comic slasher flick provides a pair of likable veterans, Karen Black (star of Five Easy Pieces) and Barry Bostwick (Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show) with rough and unready roles as respectively the demented mother of a troubled man recently released from a state mental hospital and a county sheriff hunting a serial killer whose gruesomely dispatched victims are cluttering the neighbourhood. Black is poorly used, as she has been these past 25 years; Bostwick has his pawky moments. Wisely adopting the pseudonym "Ace Hannah", Perez directed the 2009 horror movie Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, a film only Ed Wood would have signed.

★★☆☆☆ From director Jack Perez (the man behind 2009 creature feature Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus) and executive producer John Landis comes Some Guy Who Kills People (2011), an evocative if slightly misguided attempt to explore mental illness via the medium slasher/comedy generic hybrid. Starring Kevin Corrigan and The Office's Lucy Davis, Perez's latest is likeable enough - and a vast improvement on his previous outing - yet still fails to do anything more than brush the surface of its difficult chosen subject matter.

Typically, I’m a sucker for movies about sharks; ever since watching Steven Spielberg's Jaws (and its vastly inferior sequels) as a young kid, the concept of a natural menace with no malice or evil intent beyond feeding itself became something of a fascination. Since then, a number of great, horrible, and hilarious shark movies have surfaced in the vast ocean of cinema, and whether it’s the thriller Open Water, the so bad it’s funny The Deep Blue Sea, or the utterly ridiculous Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, one point remains: sharks make for terrific antagonists. Which is why whenever a film utterly wastes the potential to thrill that’s inherent in a film about sharks, like was done in Bait 3D, the people behind the disappointment deserve to be throttled and run out of town.

Director: Joseph J. Lawson. Review: Adam Wing. ‘The Asylum presents’ is a headline that sends shivers down the spine of film fans the world over. Responsible for cinematic atrocities (or mockbusters as they’ve come to be known) like Paranormal Entity and Snakes on a Train, The Asylum has been churning out direct-to-video masterpieces for the past 15 years. It’s probably best known (in my world at least) for giving 80s pop stars Debbie Gibson and Tiffany a new lease of life, and reminding me once and for all why nostalgia is best left in the past. But films like Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus are sure to stand the test of time – unless of course it’s quality entertainment you’re after. In which case, you might want to give War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave a wide berth. Joseph J. Lawson leads the charge on this one,...

If Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus taught us anything at all, it’s that the world’s scariest creatures are made infinitely more entertaining if they’re increased in size. How else do you explain our fascination with dinosaurs? They are basically enormous crocodiles, after all. Taking that logic and sprinting with it for a moment might help explain why a Chinese studio has taken the obvious next step of making Million Dollar Crocodile - a lavish CGI creature feature/horror-comedy that stars a gigantic croc which, somewhat ironically, must have cost more than a million dollars to bring to life.
For those of you who think a film with a massive reptile in it needs a story, here it is:
Xiao (10) befriends Amao, a 36 foot crocodile, who lives on his fathers croc sanctuary. Soon his father is forced to sell the crocodiles to a gangster who plans to use them for high priced meals.

Who isn't a fan of such greats as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train"? That is the kind of quality cinema that "The Asylum" continues to pump out and they have just announced their latest money making garuntee titled, "Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark." The Asylum, the company behind such awful rip-offs as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train," is continuing its "Mega Shark" franchise by moving forward with a third installment, called Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark. After battling its way through "Mega shark vs Giant Octopus" in 2009 and "Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus" in 2010, Mega Shark returns to take on Mecha Shark, which is a top-secret robotic government creation meant to destroy the monster. As always, the fierce battle will somehow threaten the planet. "The fan response to the Mega Shark franchise has been rabid," said The Asylum. "In addition to a very persuasive online petition, we found that Mega Shark has taken on a life of her own. We've received photos of Mega Shark cakes, toys and games on a near-daily basis, and we thought it was high time she did battle with an iconic Mecha monster."...

Adaptations of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novels haven’t fared well in the past, so can Andrew Stanton’s John Carter break the cycle? Terence finds out...
This Friday, one of science fiction and fantasy writer Edgar Rice Burroughs' most popular characters is finally making his big screen debut. And it’s not that yelling guy in the loin cloth who hangs out with apes. No, the movie is about Burroughs' other most popular character, John Carter of Mars.
Primarily known as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) wrote an estimated 70 novels featuring a wide array of different characters and their stories. Most of his books are still in print today (there are 539 Burroughs titles available from the Kindle store alone). 62 years after his death, Burroughs continues to be one of the genre's most venerated old-school pulp adventure writers.

It's not the best title, is it? Trying to sell the excellent Some Guy Who Kills People is a lot harder than it ought to be when the name makes it sound like a slacker's Film Studies final year project submitted at the last minute. Hearing it's the next film from the director behind Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus and Wild Things 2 is none too helpful, either. But despite the lack of any overt showmanship and the baggage that comes with that pedigree, Some Guy really is one to watch. An unlikely romantic comedy centring on some guy who, well, does seem to be notching up quite a few murders in a small American rural town, it's blackly, violently funny - yet also meltingly...

It takes a twisted creative genius to produce a compellingly bad film. It doesn't sound like Madonna's W.E. makes the cut
Like the vast majority of you, I presume, I'll probably give W.E. a miss. I did have momentary hopes for Madonna's biopic of Wallis Simpson; by the time the house lights had risen on the Venice film festival, the vultures of Twitter were already circling. This looked like it could be special. Then came Xan Brooks's review offering tantalising promises of something "jaw-dropping" and "risible", including a scene where Wallis dances with a Masai tribesman to the strains of the Sex Pistols' Pretty Vacant. Hello, is that the ticket office?
Then came the crushing disappointment. Further exploration unearthed critics on the Telegraph, the Mail, the Independent, the Hollywood Reporter and beyond using dreaded phrases like "redeeming features"; "breath of fresh air" and "lovely frocks". The critics, alas,...

Did anybody see this coming? Apparently SyFy is showing a disturbing lack of faith in Sci Fi, the genre it purportedly champions, yet again.
According to AOL TV, Blood and Chrome, the two-hour pilot for a possible series recounting the early days of William Adama and the first Cylon War is nearly complete and has been screened for SyFy execs. But instead of rallying behind the prequel to their critically-acclaimed Battlestar Galactica, word is that they are considering releasing the show on the web instead.
Although it was originally designed to be a series of webisodes to be shot on greenscreen, the production was upgraded to TV movie/pilot status when Syfy’s other BSG-related show, Caprica, was cancelled.
Word is that the script was quite good and there is certainly a lot of interest from the fan community in Blood and Chrome, yet it baffles us that the network...

What happened to low standards? John Patterson wishes Hollywood would make B-movies the way they were meant to be made – badly
Nothing makes me happier than stumbling upon a hitherto undetected genre of movies. Not like the western, screwball comedy or film noir – these genres are different. For instance, I believe you can count the entire career of Harry Dean Stanton, or Robert Ryan, as a coherent genre unto itself, built around an actor's exquisite taste in roles. A few years ago there appeared a facetious book of academic essays about Alan Smithee – the catch-all DGA pseudonym under which movies are released if their real directors have removed their names in shame or horror – as if the alias were a directorial signature as recognisable as Hitchcock's or John Ford's. Me? Well, I just happened upon the rich and glorious inheritance of the "Versus" movie.

DVD & Blu-ray, 20th Century Fox
Movies are great at pitting one element against another, from Cowboys & Aliens to Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus. But there's no surprise who comes out on top in Danny Boyle's movie about Man v Rock. Rock wins, every time. Based on the story of outdoors man Aron Ralston, who had to sever his right arm to free himself from a boulder that was pinning him down, this is – as the title suggests – an account of the period during which Ralton's hopes of rescue and escape vanish and he's left with only one painful, inevitable option to get out alive. Actor James Franco has been tipped as one to watch for almost a dozen years since his breakthrough role in TV's Freaks And Geeks, and here he gets plenty of screen time to showcase his talent. But it's not quite a one-man (or even one-rock) show.

August 2012 will see a former Us president take on supernatural monsters in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter while the same month this year offers Wild West settlers battling spaceships in the comic book adaptation Cowboys & Aliens, also set in the 19th century.
But let's go back further for another unlikely showdown. Way back, before there were humans at all.
Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld is teaming up with Scottish comic book scribe Grant Morrison to develop a graphic novel, and then a film adaptation, called Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens.
Sounding like one of those cheesy TV movies (such as Komodo vs Cobra, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus), the project has made waves across the internet as "amazing" or "dumbest idea ever."
What seems to give it a greater credibility is the involvement of highly-regarded Morrison who - along with Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and others - was part of...

Barry Sonnenfeld's newly announced project "Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens" sounds like a Topps trading card mash-up, or the ultimate Steven Spielberg movie. Or, it's just the latest in a title-as-pitch kind of production mentality that's so far given us "Snakes on a Plane," "Dragon Wars," "Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus," and numerous silly SyFy Films and The Asylum knock-off releases. But this time it's not technically a B-movie. And though the trend is already reaching the majors big time this summer with "Cowboys & Aliens" and somewhat "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," people seem stunned by this news.…...

The God of Thunder had quite a busy weekend. Last Friday, he showed up in multiplexes around the country, courtesy of Marvel/Paramount's blockbuster Thor. Then on Saturday night, thanks to those lunatics running The Asylum, he materialized on television in a made-for-Syfy mockbuster called Almighty Thor.
If nothing else, this weekend proved there definitely is a Thor for every budget — Marvel's version cost about $150 million, and I'm willing to bet The Asylum made their film for an amount equal to the catering costs on Marvel's flick. Actually, what these two films really prove is that you get what you pay for.
Let's play contrast and compare. Marvel's film is filled with fine award-winning actors; is loaded with jaw-dropping special effects; and was directed by Kenneth Branagh, noted interpreter of Shakespeare. Almighty Thor...

So if you were following my test last week to release the Disc 2 before the main episode, you’ll notice that this week I quickly reverted to our old way of doing things. I just found that putting out a Disc 2 before the Disc 1 caused a minor tear in the space time continuum, and I can’t have that on my conscience again. This week we continue our preview of this week’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases, including things like Tron, Taxi Driver, and Batman Beyond The Return Of The Joker, as well as a look at what else has been on our screens.
Disc 2 episodes are bonus/supplement episodes of The CriterionCast. Ryan Gallagher, James McCormick, and Travis George chat about movies and movie experiences. “On The Screen” is where they discuss anything and everything that has been on their screens in the week. From the cable network that brought you such small screen gems as Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, Alien Apocalypse, and Mega Piranha comes the latest Syfy Original CGI-fest Mongolian Death Worm.
Although not a masterpiece, it's not as bad as you think. Sean Patrick Flanery brings a certain level of sweaty charm and the resident hot chick, Victoria Pratt, turns in a decent performance and certainly looks good doing it, but I wouldn't go so far as to recommend this. If you're at home alone on a Saturday night and it happens to come on SyFy channel and nothing else better is on then, by all means, tune in. I wouldn't miss a rerun of the Simpsons for it though.

Welcome to the second installment of Blogomatic3000′s soundtrack round-up, this time focusing on the scores of Chris Ridenhour and in particular his work with mockbuster kings The Asylum.
Chris Ridenhour moved to Los Angeles in the late 90’s to work for film composer/orchestrator Todd Hayen and his wife Janice. During his tenure with the Hayens, Chris worked on the scores of Mark Isham, Lalo Schifrin, Gary Chang, John Debney, Shirley Walker, and many others.
in 2007 Ridenhour began composing for the production company The Asylum — with things taking off after he composed the music for Journey to the Center of the Earth in 2008. Since that time he has worked on about twenty of their films, including the widely popular Megashark vs Giant Octopus, Princess of Mars, Mega Piranha, Dragonquest,The Hitchhiker, and Transmorphers.

The Jack Perez directed Some Guy Who Kills People dropped a trailer today and it looks bloody hilarious. Not surprising when you've got John Landis executive producing the film. The script, from Ryan Levin, follows Ken Boyd (Kevin Corrigan), a man just released from the loony bin, who decides to kill the people he thinks are responsible for his miserable life....
The cast also includes Karen black, Barry Bostwick, Lucy Davis, Ariel Gade and Leo Fitzpatrick. Black comedy is the theme of this one so don't let the first bit of the trailer fool you. The blood and the body parts start flying and it seems to fit into that same tone as the Landis directed American Werewolf In London.
Perez previously directed Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (which is a good or bad thing depending on who you ask) and Some Guy Who Kills People looks like it's taking black comedy to its heights.

The fine folks running The Asylum have done it again. Purveyor of mockbusters and Syfy mega-features such as Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Mega Piranha and, of course, Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus, The Asylum has now delivered unto us Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, and it's safe to say that this low-budget delight delivers everything you might desire from a film bearing such a title.
Although the flick's big battle is ostensibly between the titular creatures, in truth the main event features '80s pop tarts Tiffany and Debbie Gibson playing strong women at odds who, by movie's end, are united in more ways than one by a common mega-enemy.
Gibson stars as Nikki, a fervent animal rights activist whose zeal borders on the sociopathic. Tiffany plays Terry, a park ranger whose beat is the Florida Everglades.
