The film plays as a Prequel/ Spin-off of sorts. In the original series, there is a 2 Year time jump after the players of SAO are trapped in the game and they've already cleared around 60 or more floors of Aincrad. The Progressive Series follows Kirito & Asuna's adventures In-between that time.
