Living life so far out of the fast lane she's just idling, ELAINE exists in a haze of cigarette smoke and booze. When an old flame surprises her with a Christmastime visit, Elaine is forced to re-examine her past--both her broken relationships and her destroyed career as a research virologist. But a brutal secret turns the holiday visit into a nightmare of blood and violence.

Planning to escape from her small town self-isolation, Elaine races to the record store where she works, hoping to get some much-needed money. There is something about her vehicle that seems to disturb Elaine. At work, she banters with actor wannabe and wise-ass co-worker Ben, before demanding a holiday bonus from her boss, Carl. Greasy and obnoxious, Carl calls out Elaine on her poor work. Elaine just asks for her pay, which Carl refuses. This leaves Elaine in desperate need of money. While Elaine worries over her escape, her home is searched by Alec, a menacing man in black. When Alec arrives at the record store, Elaine dashes out the back while Ben stalls. Alec is lured to the alley, giving Elaine a chance to escape. While driving away, Elaine is surprised to find Ben hiding in her back seat. When they stop for fuel, Ben grows curious about the strange sounds coming from what he thinks is the car. Before he can look in the trunk, Elaine is back in the car and ready to go. She knows that, with Alec on their tail, safety is unlikely. Elaine and Ben drive to her one hope for help. A secluded and self-sufficient cabin owned by her old research colleague, Mateo. Mateo is not happy to see Elaine, but eventually lets her in the cabin, when Elaine talks about the mysterious Birdcage and another friend, Charlie. Elaine recalls Charlie arriving the night before, and how a surprise reunion turned into a nightmare. Turns out, Charlie is the noisy thing in the trunk... and he's a zombie. Elaine asks Mateo to help her with a cure while Ben simply freaks out about zombies. Mateo and Elaine work in his home lab, hoping to cure the zombie Charlie. Before they complete it, Alec arrives. As Elaine hastens to cure zombie Charlie, Mateo and Ben face off with Alec. Mateo has a macho stand-off with Alec. Elaine injects Charlie, turning him back into a human. But before she and Charlie can escape, Alec arrives. There is a fight, and only Elaine escapes the lab as Charlie and Alec fight, both turning into zombies. Elaine is surprised when Ben is there for her. They walk away from the burning cabin and those who are dead and undead.
