Romanian Communist since 1965, he was the last President of the Socialist Republic of Romania as President of the Council of State from 9 December 1967 to 29 April 1974 and President from 29 April 1974 to 22 December 1989, the year in which he was deposed and tried with charges of crimes against the state, genocide and "destruction of the national economy".
