Charter Communications is shutting down Spectrum Originals, the home of shows such as L.A.’s Finest and Joe Pickett, as the media company moves away from its original programming plans. As first reported by Deadline, the decision to shut down the premium cable channel comes as Charter’s former Head of Original Content, Katherine Pope, is leaving to become President of Sony Pictures Television Studios. A Spectrum representative told Deadline that it will be a gradual process as the company explores options for its various series in the coming weeks and months. Spectrum Originals launched in 2019 with the Bad Boys spinoff L.A.’s Finest starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, which NBC had passed on. Since then, the network has picked up shows such as the Mad About You revival, Paradise Lost, The Bite, and the neo-Western Joe Pickett, which has become Spectrum’s top-rated series and was recently renewed for a second season.

The TV landscape is losing another source of original content: Spectrum Originals, which produced series like L.A.’s Finest and the Mad About You revival for Spectrum cable subscribers, is shutting down, according to our sister site Deadline, with parent company Charter Communications scrapping all of its original programming plans.
The move leaves several current Spectrum series in limbo, including neo-Western Joe Pickett, which is billed as Spectrum’s top-rated series ever and was renewed for Season 2 in February, and sci-fi thriller Beacon 23, starring Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, which has already been renewed ahead of its series premiere.

Charter is phasing out Spectrum Originals as the cable provider moves out of the original scripted series space, Variety has confirmed.
The move comes after it was reported that Spectrum Originals head Katherine Pope would be leaving the company to take over Sony Pictures Television from Jeff Frost. Pope is due to begin her new role in the coming weeks, at which time Charter will begin to phase out the Originals division.

Paramount+ will continue to be Evil.
The Paramount Global-backed streamer has handed out a speedy season four renewal for Robert and Michelle King’s former CBS drama Evil. The news arrives mere weeks after season three of the series starring Katja Herbers and Mike Colter launched its third season on the platform.
“Evil continues to expand its fanbase of both critics and viewers alike; season three currently has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it is a consistent top five most-watched original series and acquisition driver for the service,” said Nicole Clemens, president, Paramount+ original scripted series. “We couldn’t be more excited to be terrified by what Robert and Michelle create for season four with our outstanding cast bringing it to life.”
Originally developed for CBS, Evil aired its first season on the broadcast network before moving to the streamer for its sophomore debut.

“Evil” is so much more than its one-word title suggests, but it almost defies description. It’s a creepy-as-hell, addictive blend of supernatural horror, character study, outrageous humor and subversive satire, with some raunchiness and profanity thrown in, presented with the trademark acerbic wit that we’ve come to expect from top-of-their-game hubby and wife creators Robert King and Michelle King.

The genre-bending drama is led by Katja Herbers as the skeptical Dr. Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as priest-in-training David Acosta and Aasif Mandvi as sardonic every-man Ben Shakir, who examine the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. The dysfunctional trio investigate the Catholic Church’s backlog of unexplained mysteries, including supposed miracles, demonic possessions and hauntings. Their job is to assess if there is a logical explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work, often coming up against the devious Dr.

When Audra McDonald was nine, she was offered to play “the little Black servant girl” in a production of William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker.”
McDonald desperately wanted the part, but her parents stepped in and refused.
“They said no, it’s a demeaning role, you don’t have to do that, there are other roles you can do. You may not be happy with this now, but one day you’ll understand that you don’t have to perpetuate that stereotype. I was furious at the time, but boy do I understand it now,” McDonald said.
The legendary Broadway actor recounted the anecdote (one she’s previously shared) and revealed how her parents’ decision has “played into a lot of my role choices” during a wide-ranging keynote conversation at Series Mania.

“Evil” is here to stay. Accompanying the announcement Thursday that Robert and Michelle King have extended their five-year overall producing deal with CBS Studios for their King Size Productions, the company has renewed “Evil” for a third season at Paramount Plus.
In May, ViacomCBS announced that the second season of “Evil” would move from CBS to Paramount Plus, which ViacomCBS relaunched in March (it was previously CBS All Access). The show revolves around the investigations into demonic activities (or are they?) by Catholic Church assessor David (Mike Colter), forensic psychologist Kristen (Katja Herbers) and tech-guy skeptic Ben (Aasif Mandvi) — and the evildoing of their gleefully nasty foe, Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson).
With the first three episodes of “Evil’s” second season available to stream, “This season is already one of the service’s top acquisition drivers, with viewership growing week over week compared to the first season,” stated a CBS Studios press release.

The Good Fight and Evil creators Robert and Michelle King are staying at their longtime studio home, CBS Studios. But this was not a straight-forward overall deal renewal. The big new five-year pact, said to be in the high eight figures with a potential to cross the nine-figure mark in success, came after months of negotiations.
It was touch and go for awhile with multiple suitors pursuing the prolific duo, including Universal Television, I hear. In the end, CBS Studios stepped up to keep two of their top creators in the fold, extending their tenure to 17 years.
Under the new agreement, CBS Studios will continue to have exclusive rights to produce content created by the Kings through their King Size Productions banner across all platforms. Liz Glotzer remains president of King Size Productions.
The Kings have successfully juggled multiple series for most of their 12 years to date at CBS Studios.

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 133 shows for Best Drama Series. On the bright side, the amount of entrants is down by 66 from last year, and members no longer have to winnow their choices down to just 10 favorites. As with the last several years, they are being told to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “Succession,” will not return to defend its title, as no new episodes of the HBO series have aired since its second season finale in October 2019. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have been felt far and wide, with the latest being on the nominations-round ballots for the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
The total number of submissions are down significantly across most categories. The drama series race sees 133 contenders, while the comedy series race sees 68 titles on the ballot and the limited series/anthology category has 37 programs on the ballot. Last year, drama series came in at a whopping 197, while comedy had a strong showing at 111 and limited series came in at 41. A category where submissions are up for the first time in a long time is TV movie, which sees 41 nominees this year (compared to last year’s 28).
Interestingly, Spectrum Originals “The Bite,” from creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King, ended up submitting in the drama series category, despite originally being developed as a limited series. The Kings did recently tell Variety that...

First they conquered Broadway, now they’re trying to take over television too. Several of the stars of the Tony-winning musical “Hamilton” currently spend their days moonlighting on your TV screens as aeronauts from the country of Texas in fantasy shows on HBO and former girl group members in new comedies on Peacock. This means that, with the filmed version of “Hamilton” is also eligible for this year’s Emmys, many of the musical’s stars now have multiple opportunities to earn recognition.
However, we’re not concerned with whether or not they will be nominated for “Hamilton” right now. Rather, we want to know which of these talented actors and actresses could earn bids for their other work. So we’ve taken a look at all of the odds and ranked the “Hamilton” stars from those most likely to receive an Emmy nomination to least likely, based on their new TV roles.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Bite,” available now on Spectrum on Demand platforms.
Five years ago, Michelle and Robert King created and executive produced a political satire entitled “BrainDead,” in which extraterrestrial insects began to crawl inside the ears of government officials and begin to take control of their words and actions. Since then, the prolific television scribes watched as science became politicized, especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and despite already having two ongoing drama series (“Evil” and “The Good Fight” for Paramount Plus) to run, they were inspired to step back into the world of satire with “The Bite.”
Written, produced and set during the pandemic, “The Bite” is centered on New York neighbors Rachel (Audra McDonald) and Lily (Taylor Schilling) who end up tasked with saving the world when a zombie virus emerges. That’s right, zombies. In addition to a global pandemic.
