Deep River was writer/director Scott Kessler's first screenplay. It was written over an eight year period and originally featured a much different ending than that which made it to the screen.
Most of the characters in Deep River are based on real people and the stories told to Scott Kessler.
Deep River was made for just less than $10,000 dollars over an 18 month span.
The movie was shot on MiniDV tape and edited on table-top computers using readily available editing software. It was shot on a single 3CCD camera.
Merced, California-based Post-punk/Prog rock band Deriva (Carlos Pena, Craig Cofresi, Rick Stokes, George Kiliveros), who contributed the haunting score, are long-time friends of writer/director Scott Kessler. They agreed to contribute the score for free.
