Netflix, the world’s leading streaming platform, has secured the digital rights of two upcoming Tamil films starring the iconic actor Kamal Haasan. According to a tweet by @cinemawithab, a popular cinema news account on Twitter, Netflix has shelled out a massive 220 crores for the digital rights of Indian 2, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian, directed by Shankar. The tweet also revealed that Netflix has bought the digital rights of KH233, another Kamal Haasan film directed by H. Vinoth, for 125 crores.
These deals are a clear indication of Netflix’s ambitious plan to dominate the Tamil Nadu streaming market, which has a huge potential for growth and loyal fan base. ReviewIf life is an unpredictable occurrence, so is death, says the unified chant of the five filmmakers, even as each presents their case in their unique tone and sensibility.Pentagon / ScreengrabAnthology films managed to find a second lease of life following the advent of streaming platforms. In India, the resurgence of the format could be attributed to the star-studded four-part feature Bombay Talkies (2013) which, as a grand attempt to mark the centenary year of Indian cinema, brought together the four noted filmmakers Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Anurag Kashyap. Since then, one has seen several engaging themes and topics being moulded into anthologies and, in turn, helping the short film format thrive in parallel. Lust Stories, Paava Kathaigal, the Modern Love franchise, Navarasa, Anger Tales, and Kannada's own Katha Sangama (both 1975 & 2019) are some of the noteworthy endeavours in this format. In Guru Deshpande's five-film anthology Pentagon, the...

Netflix India’s director, films and licensing, Pratiksha Rao, has welcomed the competition in the country’s crowded streaming space.
Speaking at the Asia Video Industry Association’s Future of Video India conference on Friday, Rao was asked about competition, especially with rival Amazon Prime Video India announcing a massive 40-strong slate on Thursday and other players catering to the country’s heartlands.
“Competition is always great, it pushes us to do better. It also widens the market, widens the supply. It’s great for the creative community,” said Rao. “If you look at our slate right now, there is something for everyone. There are more and more films and series that we’re doing, which actually focus on lives across India. Not just the urban centers, but also the heartlands. And even on the regional language front, specifically the South Indian language front, we’ve already started some of our original slate.

KollywoodCasting directors in the Tamil film industry tell Tnm how actors have broken the ‘ideal hero’ bubble over the years, if up-and-coming actors deal with the same level of scrutiny with regard to their looks, and more.Saradha UTwitter/ Boney Kapoor, Screengrabs/ YouTubePopular Kollywood actor Ajith’s long-awaited actioner Valimai, which hit the big screens earlier this year, had opened to mixed responses from audiences and critics alike. Surprisingly, however, what seemed to trigger a bigger discussion surrounding the film was a review by a popular YouTuber, who had resorted to body shaming Ajith for his look in the movie. While the actor’s dedicated fanbase steadfastly condemned the tone and language used by the critic in question, the incident also caused movie buffs and fitness enthusiasts to turn to social media to ponder – what can we expect from a ‘quintessential hero’? Film CommentaryFor Kollywood, it’s become par for the course to mock Yogi Babu for his looks with slurs like “panni munji vaaya” (pig-face). Such pejoratives have their roots in the casteist dehumanising of dark-skinned, wiry-haired people.Bharathy SingaravelCourtesy/SonyMusicSouthVEVOMainstream Tamil cinema has in the last few years, particularly since the films of Pa Ranjith, witnessed a significant shift in how Dalit, Adivasi or Bahujan people are represented on screen. A generation of younger filmmakers, many supported by Ranjith’s Neelam Productions, have registered a strong, anti-caste, Ambedkarite stance coupled with compelling storytelling. While the industry at large seems to have recognised the ‘marketability’ of such films, it still has a long way to go in exorcising casteism from within its own ranks of scriptwriting, lyrics and characterization. Take the recently released Mahaan. The lacklustre plotline aside, Vikram’s sort-of-intro song brazenly equates a self-absorbed, irresponsible con-man, roaming the city...

According to reports, Netflix added 2.6 million paying subscribers in the Asia Pacific region in the last quarter, showing good growth in Japan and India. This article contains spoilers for Brooklyn Nine-nine season 8 episodes 9 and 10.
There reaches a point where every sitcom needs to say goodbye. While many fans would be content to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine play the hits forever — watch Jake uncover a triple cross yet again, cringe when Boyle drops another unintentional innuendo, laugh when Holt robotically delivers the newest slang term — at some point, cast and crew run out of creative steam and must move on. Brooklyn Nine-Nine attempted to stretch itself in Season 8, admirable for a series this far into its run itself, and especially given the context and intentions, but not every comedy is meant for a serious reinvention. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was gloriously silly with just the right amount of pulp and heart, a rare comedy almost fully formed from episode one. It was here for a good time, and despite Fox’s best efforts, stayed for a long time.

With little by way of competition, Disney’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings easily held the no. 1 position at the box office last weekend.
The first Marvel title to feature an Asian lead and an predominantly Asian cast, Shang-Chi mustered $1.4 million in its second frame, a drop of 28 per cent, moving to $4 million.
It is a good result for the title given how heavily disrupted the marketplace is, and the Simu Liu and Awkwafina-starrer will likely get a boost this Thursday when it in released in the cinemas previously closed in parts of regional Victoria and Nsw.
Cinemas in regional Victoria (except Greater Shepparton) were able to reopen last Thursday, however under severe restrictions; 20 people per cinema. In certain parts of regional Nsw, theatres were back online Saturday morning at one person per 4 square metres or 75 per cent of seating capacity. Masks are compulsory indoors in both states.

This article contains spoilers for Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 episode 5.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 Episode 5
NBC is hellbent on burning through the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine for some reason. Each week the show has aired one traditional season 8 episode mixed with another peppered with political commentary. It’s an odd move, creating a disorienting tone and making certain episodes feel like filler. That perception is held at bay this week at least with a curtain call for the Pontiac Bandit.
Oddly, the move may be just as polarizing as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s recent policing-focused episodes. While Craig Robinson’s appearances as Doug Judy a.k.a. The Pontiac Bandit delights many, some have complained that the schtick grew stale ages ago. While I’ve always been a sucker for a Pb+J team-up in the past, this time around I’m seeing the seams that many have complained about in the past.

Leos Carax’s tragic romance “Annette” is a movie musical like no other. The songs, written by Sparks brothers Ron and Russell Mael, are detached and ironic, and the characters are for the most part deeply unhappy amid the trappings of contemporary fame. As the glamorous soprano Ann Desfranoux, Cotillard reminds audiences of her already lovely singing voice as established in films like her Oscar-winning “La Vie en Rose” and the Fellini-inspired musical “Nine.”
She also has a music career of her own, having written and performed songs for a number of other films. But “Annette” marked something of a shift for how she performed vocally: all of the singing is done live in-camera, and the characters are often asked to sing during moments where one wouldn’t exactly think to burst out in song and dance. Cotillard manages to sing while swimming, having a cigarette, going to the bathroom,...

This Star Trek: Lower Decks review contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1.
With very few exceptions, each new season of any given Star Trek series always feels like a moment for the specific show to change things up. Riker grew a beard in Next Generation Season 2. Worf crashed Deep Space Nine in season 4. Archer started unbuttoning his collar and mussing up his hair in Season 3 of Enterprise. Discovery has literally had a different captain and premise every season. Even in The Original Series, the crew got themselves some Chekov. after their first year. You get it. A new season of Trek usually means one question: What’s new? What’s the same?
But, with the debut Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2, that question doesn’t work. The show doesn’t feel remotely different, retooled, or radically changed from Season 1. If anything is different it’s simply that it’s even funnier...

Film Commentary'Guitar Kambi' has the same signature style of romance that we have seen in almost all Gvm films, with the leads perpetually stuck in the honeymoon phase of love. Shakti SwaminathanImagine you are sitting in a restaurant and waiting for a friend. You spot a couple sitting at the same restaurant, against the backdrop of stone cladding, wooden furniture and lissom plants writhing in between. The guy sips coffee from a blue pottery cup while making intense eye contact with the woman across and you hear snatches of their staccato conversation that almost sounds like whispers. She sits daintily, in a boho ethnic attire, a cotton sari thrown casually but perfectly over her shoulder and matched with chunky silver jewellery. Her hair billows in the wind, and the glint of her nose stud and dark kohl rimmed eyes grab your attention. As you sit admiring the visceral perfection of the scene,...

Film COMMENTARYMuch like what happened in Jim Crow-era America, popular culture here, especially the movies, are rife with casteist caricatures and profit from it.Bharathy SingaravelImage courtesy: NetflixGoogle the history of “sambo” and “coon” jokes, the products of Jim Crow-era America and you will find the historic overlap between racism, white supremacy, segregation and slavery. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, many American states, especially in the south, had Jim Crow laws. These laws were put in place to enforce racial segregation. Black people were considered second class citizens and these laws legitimised anti-black racism. In America, during that time, everything from childrens’ books to Hollywood movies profited of this caricature, that propagated a crude portrayal of black people as slow-witted, ugly, bestial-looking, monstrous, lazy, inhuman. Popular culture serves both to defy social injustices and to cast bigotry in iron-clad armour—and in this case it...

KollywoodWith 'Navarasa' all set to release in a few hours on Netflix, we look back at what the anthology format has done from 30 years ago to the current Covid-age.Bharathy SingaravelWith the much-hyped Navarasa all set to premiere on Netflix on August 6, it really seems to be raining Tamil anthologies in the Covid-era. The format isn’t recent but neither was it common. Suhasini Mani Ratnam’s Penn (1991) or Revathy’s Chinna Chinna Aasai (mid-'90s) are remembered fondly by many. Though they’d be better categorised purely on technical grounds as mini-series rather than anthologies (a collection of works by various directors), they no doubt prepared the audience for this form of storytelling. Watching Penn now, I’m grappling with how to judge a work from 30 years ago. A female director told stories centering women. The stories addressed love, romance and streaks of individuality, but also were perhaps predictable.

Brand New Cherry Flavor looks like one of the wildest shows of the year -- and that's a good thing.
Netflix on Friday dropped the full-length trailer.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down because of how out there it was, but it looks exciting.
"Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie," reads the logline.
"But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways, and a dream project turns into a nightmare," it continues.
"This particular nightmare has zombies, hit men, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people."
"And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive."
