Mumbai, Aug 21 (Ians) Acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi’s father Pandit Banaras Tiwari has died at the age of 99. The final rites will be taking place on Monday.

According to reports, Pankaj was shooting in Uttarakhand for a film, and is now on his way back to his village in Gopalganj, Bihar.

An official statement read: “It’s with a heavy heart to confirm that Pankaj Tripathi’s father, Pandit Banaras Tiwari is no more. He lived a wholesome life of 99 years.”

“His last rites will be performed today amongst his close family. Pankaj Tripathi is currently on his way to his village in Gopalganj,” the statement added.

Pankaj’s latest release is Omg 2 with Akshay Kumar and Yami Gautam. It has been performing well at the box office. The film on its tenth day has collected Rs. 113.67 crore at the box office.

"I was in a studio recording for 'Shaabaashiyaan' from 'Mission Mangal'. There was this track and Amit asked me, 'Can you just put down some idea whatever comes to you?' In one take, I just sang that part for the song 'Raavan'. It wasn't something that took a lot of time, it was a very spontaneous reaction of mine to the song and I think that's what worked," Shilpa said.

Producer Amit Khanna shared the news on his unverified Twitter account. "A friend of 5 decades filmmaker Johnny Bakshi passed away this morning. He will be missed by many whose life he touched. May his soul rest in peace," he wrote.

Johnny Bakshi had produced Mahesh Bhatt's debut directorial film "Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain", which released in 1974. Other films backed by him include "Meraa Dost Meraa Dushman" (1984) and "Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee" (1993). He had also directed and produced the 1984 film "Raavan". He has helmed two other films, "Daku Aur Police" (1992) and "Khudai" (1994). He has also acted in a few films.

The first trailer came out on March 2 at midnight, after it was pushed by a day because of the death of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswati. The second trailer begins with Nana Patekar promising to change poverty into 'light'. This is followed by a building that's up in flames. We see more of Nana Patekar in the trailer, as he clearly marks out Kaala to be 'Raavan' and stating that whoever opposes him will be killed. The song 'Patthu thala Ravana' plays appropriately in the background. Huma Qureshi is seen asking Kaala if he really likes her a lot, to which he replies in the affirmative. At nine, Dileep Shekar lost his father and had to don the mantle of the family’s breadwinner soon after. Renowned music directors like Dhanraj and M K Arjunan took him under their wing and young Dileep could by then play the synthesizer like a young pro. After the family embraced Islam, Dileep was re-christened as Alla Rakha Rahman and came to be known in the field of music as Ar Rahman. With music in his genes, he soon gained mastery over several instruments and with a group of friends, he formed a music band called. ‘Roots’. From there, he graduated to composing music for jingles. He also earned expertise in his craft by freelancing for music directors like Ms Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja and Raj Koti and also found opportunity to accompany stalwarts like Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and L Shankar. In 1992, veteran director Balachander produced Roja under his home banner with Mani Ratnam as director. The duo decided to introduce a new music director for their film and the opportunity came Rahman’s way. Until then, Ilaiyaraaja had been Mani’s favourite composer and his scores had embellished films like Mouna Ragam, Agni Nakshathiram and Nayagan among others. But the gamble paid off and Roja heralded the arrival of a new composer who would eventually conquer the world of film music in the years to come. With a baton like a magic wand, Rahman would regale audiences around the globe, working not just in Kollywood and Bollywood but in Hollywood films as well. Roja became a trendsetter for its music score and Rahman made bold by introducing singers like Minmini (Chinna Chinna Aasai) while relying on proven performers like Sp Balasubramanian, Chitra, Sujatha, Unni Menon and Hariharan. Vairamuthu’s lyrics set to Rahman’s music in Roja became a rage and the two of them would later work together in several movies, enthralling listeners of all ages. And logic supports this argument as Rahman has won two of his four National Awards for Mani’s films (Roja and Kannathil Muthamittaal) and their combination turned Bombay into one of the largest selling albums in Tamil cinema. Rahman has also been an integral part of Mani’s Hindi films like Dil Se, Yuva, Guru and Raavan. The soundtracks of other Mani films like Kadal, O Kadhal Kanmani and Kaatru Veliyedai too bore Rahman’s stamp. Apart from Mani, Rahman has also shared a great rapport with director Shankar who has repeated Rahman in all his films right from his debut film Gentleman. Their latest collaboration 2.0, starring Rajnikant which is slated to hit the screens next year, is eagerly awaited by the diehard fans of the actor, the director and the music director as well. While most of the films for which he composed the music were set against an urban backdrop, Rahman was not found wanting when working for films with pastoral themes either. Nikhil Dwivedi and Richa Chadda who have only been seen in supporting roles till date, will now be seen together as the lead roles in the upcoming film Tamanchey.

Nikhil made his debut in 2008’s My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, and has been part of several films like Raavan, Shor in the City and Hate Story since then.

Mumbai, April 15: Actor-producer Abhishek Bachchan, who has worked with Mani Ratnam in "Raavan", says the veteran filmmaker is like family to him.

Abhishek's actress-wife Aishwarya Rai is said to be featuring in a Mani Ratnam film again.

Asked if he too has a role in it, Abhishek said: "For me, Mani is not a director, he is a family to me. He just has to tell me where to come and where to stand and I will be there. I will never ask Mani what is my role."

Though nothing seems to be final in that regard, Abhishek says Mani Ratnam is still figuring out details about the movie.

Chennai Express is the upcoming commercial caper from Rohit Shetty, his first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chillies Entertainment. The film also marks Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan’s second film together, since Padukone’s debut with Khan in Om Shanti Om 6 years ago.

Mumbai, Feb 7: Tamil superstar Vikram has lost substantial weight for Shankar's "I" in which he has three different looks and even fell ill a couple of times while preparing himself for the role.

Vikram has been on a gruelling diet to get into physical shape for "I".

Mumbai, Feb 6: The film has been released, but southern superstar Vikram is still in awe of "David" director Bejoy Nambiar and has praised him saying he gives enough freedom to his actors.

Vikram too featured in Nambiar's recently released "David", his second Bollywood film after "Raavan".

"Bejoy's strong point is the freedom he gives to an actor, especially me. He let me do whatever I wanted - whether it was my costume, or the way I looked in the scenes," the 46-year-old said here in an interview.

Mumbai, Nov 25: Actor Abhishek Bachchan describes Mani Ratnam as a "cinematic genius" and urges movie lovers to grab a copy of film critic Baradwaj Rangan's book "Conversations With Mani Ratnam" and read it.

"I have just finished reading 'Conversations With Mani Ratnam' by Baradwaj Rangan. If you enjoy cinema, then you must try and get a copy of the book. A great insight into the mind of someone I consider a cinematic genius," tweeted Abhishek.

Abhishek has been part of three of his films − "Yuva" (2004), "Guru" (2007) and 2010 film "Raavan".

Ratnam, 56, is known for his landmark Tamil movies like "Mouna Raagam".

Here is a little disappointing news for all the Aishwarya Rai fans out there. The reports doing the rounds about Aish starring in Mani Ratnam’s adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s famous 1938 novel Rebecca have been rubbished by Mani’s wife Suhasini.

Suhasini denied the reports and said that right now Mani is caught up with completing his shoot for Kadal, which has a 7 day schedule left after which he needs a good 8 months to write his next script. “He is not focussing on new releases for quite some time now, so any news until his next script is ready will be false,” she stated.

Another close source of Mani Ratnam told us that he is busy with the post production work of Kadal and has no time to think about the next film for now. “All stories about his next film with Aish are just rumours,” he confirmed.

Chennai, Sep 19: Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's upcoming Tamil film "Kadal" will be dubbed in Telugu as "Kadali".

The makers of the movie have confirmed it will be titled "Kadali" in Telugu, and will be dubbed for simultaneous release.

"Kadal", which is set on a coastal village of Tamil Nadu, stars debutants Gautham Karthik, son of yesteryear actor Karthik, and Thulasi Nair, daughter of actress Radha, in lead roles.

Actors Arjun and Aravind Swamy will be seen in important roles.

Technicians such as editor Sreekar Prasad, cinematographer Rajiv Menon have also been roped in to be part of the film, while the music will be composed by A.R. Rahman.
