The title came from a random title generator.
This was the 3rd attempt at making this film. The first attempt was back in the spring of 2006. The "Jason" on that attempt was very difficult to work with and halfway through production Jason W. Schaver fired him. The role was recast with Ken Gayton and reshot in the fall of 2006. That attempt was completed, but the lighting and sound (and some of the acting) were very bad. So in the summer of 2007 Ken and Jason rewrote the script and filmed it in the spring of 2008.
The original title was "Anything Goes", but was changed after Jason W. Schaver found out it was the name of a very popular musical. The title was changed to "How a 5 Got a 9" in 2007. Then it was changed again after filming was completed to "The Truth About Average Guys".
Jason Schaver's former fiancé, Katie Meardon, can be seen in the film as "office worker #1" (aka - the one sliding down the door in the slow motion walking through the office scenes). She also did the makeup for the film.
Erika Walter loved the script so much that she flew down from Canada (on her dime) to live in Chicago for two months while filming. She was paid $1100 to play the role of "Katie Banks", but easily spent more than that while living in The Windy City.
