Egghead & Twinkie is what you'd get if you blend together Little Miss Sunshine, The Half of It and Japanese anime. While many of its tropes have been done countless times before, Egghead & Twinkie is a refreshing coming out film that crosses multiple genres: coming of age drama, comedy, and road trip. The lead characters are brilliant, and their friendship is one of the best parts of the film. Twinkie's journey - physically and metaphorically - is an absolute joy to watch, as are the flashback scenes and moments with Jess. While Egghead's confession that he has feelings for Twinkie, and her own coming out, could've ruined their relationship, it brings them even closer than ever.
I'm a middle aged Dad who likes movies but hates bad movies ha ha. I watched this film with my gay daughter. She had heard about it from a friend. Wasn't expecting much as she told me it was a low budget movie made by a student but right from the beginning it caught my attention - for all the right reasons. It is a rollercoaster of emotions as we follow our two leads on a road trip before Egghead heads to college. At times funny, sweet, sad and poignant it always rings true. Louis Tomeo excels in the part of Egghead which allows him to show his comic chops whilst having the depth of emotions to handle the heavier scenes. The actress who plays the quirky Jess does a great job of being awkward, funny and lovable - all at the same time! The script is tight, believable and clever (but not TOO clever!) and the writer/director Sarah Holland manages to tell a heartwarming story without descending into sappy. Oh, and the soundtrack is kick ass. We'd never heard any of the songs before but somehow they all fit the scenes they were applied to perfectly. This movie isn't just a good LGBT movie - it's a good movie PERIOD.

I'd been following along with the production of this movie for quite a while before it came out, and to be completely honest I was a little skeptical of just how good it could possibly be. The cast and crew all seemed relatable and down to earth, and for some reason that gave me the impression that the film would come out fairly amateur. I'm happy to say that I was 100% incorrect! About 15 minutes in, all of my doubts faded away as I was completely invested in the plot. There were so many unique and interesting elements that kept my attention throughout the entire movie. It was so lighthearted and fun, but there were also several heartfelt moments that I really resonated with. Things were a little cliche at times, but who doesn't love a cheesy romcom every now and then? Overall I have no complaints and I couldn't recommend it enough. If anyone from the cast or crew is seeing this, great job you guys. I'm so glad I stuck around long enough to see the final product!

"Egghead & Twinkie" leads viewers of all communities into a journey of lifelong friendship that resognates with a "coming of age" generation. The colorful cartoons throughout added character depth to their emotions and added a fun, comedic side to delivering the plot of the film. As Twinkie toys with the idea of being self-centered, off-course, and somewhat sneaky around her lifelong best friend, it's no surprise to see Egghead come out as the hero. But Twinkie regains respect as she realizes her ability to embrace her identity came with an emotional cost. This cost resignates with most viewers, no matter what their sexual identity, and this is where the film captures my 10 stars. This is a great film to even the most close-minded of viewers as it gracefully embraces individualism and identity at all levels of their comfort zone. It tastefully suggests viewers to respect others and simply find happiness in us being ourselves. I hope to see "Egghead & Twinkie" stream at some higher level in the future.

A sweet, poignant film dealing with real life issues!
"Egghead and Twinkie" (love that title!) provides an inspiring, supportive message for young adult viewers. (As a former high school teacher, this would be the type of movie I would have loved for students to have seen and discussed.) The movie is entertaining- lots of adventure along the way!- and the main characters are endearing. What great personalities and what a special relationship between the two!
...It is rare to see a movie that 1. Doesn't rely on sex scenes to draw in the attention of viewers, and 2. Leaves me hoping for a sequel!

I've been following this movie since 2019 when it was posted on TikTok. I am so happy with the results. There was great representation of the coming out experience. I came out my senior year of high school and I related to this story on a deep level. This movie takes you on an exciting, fun and cute coming of age adventure. I experienced so many emotions during this movie including excitement, anger, nostalgia and I laughed a bunch.
There aren't many gen z movies that depict our diologue correctly. I had a great time watching this movie and will be watching it again in the future. Great job, I'm am so proud of everyone involved! <3.

Absolutely my most favorite movie now. The way this movie moved me is beyond words. I related to Twinkie so much. This movie is beyond my expectations, even with my high expectations. I can easily see this as being THE lesbian movie. Im so proud of how good it was and how it touched so many spots that need to be touched. The quality of everything is so fantastic and this movie deserves theater screens! It deserves premieres beyond premieres. Everyone involved in the movie deserves awards on top of awards. This movie actually had me in full blown tears because of how much i could relate to everything involved.

Well that was way more fun than I was expecting! "student film, micro budget, coming out movie, gen z" Potentially a disaster for a middle-aged white guy who typically leans into action adventure stuff right?
BUT, I do appreciate a good story, well-told. And I also appreciate it when the passion for a project really comes across on the screen. And this project does not disappoint. At all.
First the story. It always starts with the script, and this one is well written. I had a little difficulty with the timeline from time to time but I found the dialog and authenticity of the performances super-engaging. And the overall honesty in capturing the time and place was touching and enlightening all at once.
Stylistically I was also impressed. The use of animation to support the story, add an element of humor, color transitions and generally provide some relief from what could otherwise feel really awkward at times was terrific. It was an effect that surprised me at first and then I came to look forward to as the story progressed. Really well-done.
A little Napoleon Dynamite, a little Juno all wrapped up in a sweet movie. Odd ball at times, very engaging performances and a ton of pay-off for any and all investment in the image on the screen. (It was well-shot too.)
Great job y'all.

Every generation has the quintessential coming of age film that captures that defining time in their life. Egghead and Twinkie has all the elements to be that film for GenZ. Sarah Kambe Holland's screenplay and direction seamlessly take you through the gamut of emotions with just the right amount of comic relief. You quickly find yourself invested in the characters and their journey. That combined with the interludes of animation, text bubbles, and the overall bright and colorful look of this movie, sets it apart from the others in it's genre. From what ever perspective you see the conflicts of coming out, this movie is heart-warming, funny, and most of all, enlightening. A must see for all!

I don't usually write reviews but I feel like people need to see this movie. I watched it on day 1 when it premiered at Cinequest and I was blown away. The Morris, the writing, the performances were absolutely stellar and it's telling a really important story for kids and adults to see.
There were a lot of really impressive visual effects and animations that added to the charm, but the best part was the dynamic between the two titular characters, Egghead and Twinkie. Their relationship is so genuine and full of ups and downs, it's impossible not to fall in love with them.
I laughed, I cried, I was carried away by the movie's magical visuals and heartwarming characters. Genuinely one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I loved it! The director's voice is clear and unique in this coming of age film. I particularly loved its super stylized feel, everything from its clever art direction and production design to its energetic editing and charming animated graphics.
The entire cast gives a great performance and helps breathe both life and color into the already lively and colorful story. Particularly the titular characters Egghead and Twinkie, whose on-screen chemistry make it easy to believe that they're lifelong friends.
Definitely a job well done, especially for a feature film debut for the director. I'm anxious to see where she goes with future projects.

Sarah Holland created a multi-layered story that is enjoyable to watch and provokes reflection over the days after viewing. The film provides thoughtful insight into the challenges faced by today's youth, some of it novel as historic societal norms are fast-changing, others reminiscent of historic coming of age struggles felt by every generation in some form. In that way, the film is relatable to any audience. Holland does a masterful job exploring human interaction and basic emotions. At no point does the viewer feel that a particular agenda or message is being promoted. Rather, the viewer is really brought into experiencing each character's perspective with grace. Parallels to a film such as "The Whale" could be drawn: the level of emotional intensity, the brightness of youth, the complexity of relationships, and the darkness of emotional struggle. The production is masterfully executed, which is testament to the producer, director, and actors but it's really the well-crafted storyline that carries the film because there was so much depth of material for the team to leverage.

What a fun and creative road trip film! A wonderful blend of heart, comedy, and relatable quirkiness while addressing the weighty issues of finding one's identity, becoming comfortable and confident with it, teenage friendships, and family relationships. Portrayed with just the right blend of humor to take the edge off the seriousness, this modern-day coming-of-age and coming out story was a blast to watch.
A delightful debut feature from the extremely talented Sarah Kambe Holland! While clearly not a member of the represented audience (unless you count Twinkie's parents), her story and character development made it so easy to relate to and appreciate Twinkie as she and Egghead undertook their adventure of self-discovery.

This movie is honestly a breath of fresh air! It's a true indie darling that warms your heart nonstop. The pacing is incredible, and it handles a non-linear timeline extremely well. In the coming of age category it's hard to stand out. Egghead & Twinkie discusses topics about LGTBQIA+ identity and being mixed race / Asian in America as a teenager in today's world. And it does it in a cute, funny, and light-hearted way! The art direction and style is reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim but with out the film bro energy. Egghead and Twinkie's chemistry is so cute and I love how their friendship is portrayed.
So, if you're looking for a sweet, feel-good movie to make your week, please watch Egghead & Twinkie!

I heard about this movie from Tiktok years ago and made a small contribution. Tbh, I wasn't sure it would be made- given Covid, etc. I was so happy to see that it not only got made, but it's a great movie with a fresh script, amazing acting and lots of cool animation. I didn't know any of the music in the soundtrack , but I thought the songs really added to the mood. I heard that Egghead and Twinkie was made by college students, and I am so impressed, as it looks as good as any movie streaming today- even better in some ways! I really hope this gets a lot of views because it has a positive, uplifting theme, and we can all use more of that.
I am so impressed with this film! It was well written, well acted and well shot. The animation is so fun and the editing is incredible. I am thrilled to see an independent film this impressive. The story flows well and feels very timely. I was invested in the characters and really wanted to see how things were going to play out. I loved the friendship between Egghead and Twinkie. In fact, all of the relationships were very realistic. This movie was super cute, fun the whole way through and gives the audience that heart warming feeling we need these days. I highly recommend this film. Now, go watch it! You will be glad you did.

I watched Egghead and Twinkie at Tiff Next Wave yesterday and absolutely loved the film. It really captured the complexity of coming out, feelings as a teenager and navigating friendships. This film explores queer and ethnic identity very well while keeping the story line light. The experience of Twinkie is one that is very relatable on different levels. Everyone watching this film can see some of themselves in these characters whether its the emotional ups and downs of a being a teenager or a story of queerness and finding oneself. The graphics/animation, soundtrack and editing was unique, playful and added to the uplifting and hopeful feel of the film. Watching this film as I'm personally navigating my queerness was heartwarming and validating. A must see for sure!

This is a very entertaining, creative, humorous coming of age movie with a twist! It involved a really great mix of animation and live action. The animation was really extraordinary! Twinkie and Egghead have such good chemistry :) Egghead is so very charming and sweet - if only there were more people like him in this world! Twinkie is truly lucky to have a friend like Egghead at her side. Jess the Boba Girl is also darling and brightens up the screen. The supporting characters are all quite funny. Great little adventure story based on friendship. Well done! Kudos! I would definitely recommend this movie to my friends!
This movie was really awesome! It is extremely artistic and the mixture of animation and live action is pretty cool! The story line is fun and the characters are fun to follow! The writing is very funny and enjoyable. I totally recommend this movie for anybody! I liked the way that, during the first half of the film while Egghead and Twinkie are telling their stories to each other, egghead pokes in and makes a comment that brings us back to the present. The use of color was also very cool! Very vibrant colors, like yellow and blue, added to the theme of this movie. I am very excited to see what these upcoming cast/crew members are capable of in the future!
Started following the creation of this movie in it's early days on TikTok a couple of years ago, and boy was it worth the wait. This movie was so cute, colorful, funny and heartwarming.
The pacing was great and I loved all the characters. The film really made sure you cared about Twinkie's personal journey, as well as Eggheads.
It was such a fun watch and I would highly suggest it. The cast was so talented and I hope to see them in future projects. The animation was a great touch that really tugged on the "coming-of-age" genre heartstrings. Overall, it was an awesome movie and I hope it receives the recognition that it deserves.

We just saw this and hope others will get a chance to see it too while it is still on Creatics for another day or so! This was a fun and funny movie and the actors felt like real teenagers! I really appreciated the creativity that ran through the whole film - not just the story line and writing, but also the little bits of animation at just the right emotional moments, the funky scribbles, and my favorite was the book with the drawings! The friendship theme was really heartwarming and a reminder of the support we all need on our big personal journeys in life, and need to give others, too. It was the right mix of serious themes and comedy and that's a big part of the genius of it.

For a lot of people, the journey to understanding your own identity and becoming comfortable with it can come with many challenges. This movie brings up those challenges but with a beautiful tone of optimism and hope; focusing on the important people in your life that are there to support you through those moments.
The characters are relatable and make you invested in their relationship, through both the highs and lows. The pacing is very upbeat and feels perfectly timed. The accompanying animations are so well done and help add to the movie's consistent energetic tone. The movie in general just feels so genuine in every aspect. I cried, laughed, I loved.
I feel stories like this are really important. For people who are growing up, and are asking themselves some of these questions, whats my sexuality, my culture, and the things that I really care about? It's a wonderful thing to be able to watch a movie like this, and to know there are other people who are figuring out the same stuff, and that there are people who care about you that will be there for you.

Egghead & Twinkie has a lot going for it. A talented cast and crew, fast pacing, creative transitions, a lighthearted tone - I could go on. But what really sets this film apart is how authentically honest it feels. Despite the awkward new reality our leads find themselves facing after years of friendship, it's never in doubt that they care about each other. Growing up can mean facing new hardships (just ask Twinkie) and disappointments (just ask Egghead), but in life's most difficult moments the right friend can lift us up and remind us that the world hasn't ended. With so much going on nowadays, we need positive stories like this now more than ever.
Thank you, Egghead & Twinkie, for the reminder of what a good friendship can mean.

This movie was so funny, I loved it. The humor and the editing style really made this movie. I found the animation style to be somewhat of a Lizzie McGuire inspired and I really thought that was great. The music also played a major role in how the message was conveyed which was also great. It really captures teenage love and sense of confusion in one-self accurately which is what I think really makes this movie. The actors also reminded me of actual teenagers and I think that really added to the immersion. The main actors really did great especially the lead female. I watched with a few of my friends and we all loved it 10/10 on my book!!!

Saw this at the Austin Film Festival! Kept meaning to leave a review because I want others to know how awesome this movie is.
Short version: Endearing characters and laugh out loud moments-- very adorable and relatable <3
Longer version: The storytelling flashback mechanic coupled with cute graphics help us get into Twinkie's head. There is a good balance of comedy and vulnerability within the story. Characters feel real and flawed (everyone is a weirdo in their own way) and the film captures the heightened emotions that come with being a teen. Definitely a new favorite of the genre (DVD release???)
