Netflix has ordered a new six-part supernatural drama limited series set to be filmed in Newfoundland in Canada.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the new limited series today with a quote from Netflix Canada’s content directors, Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. They said, “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience, and adaptability.”

Plot details are scarce, but the trades state that the series will be set in a remote town in Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province. That town is “terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, and a hard-bitten fisherman must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.”

The series has yet to be titled but is being helmed by Jesse McKeown.

Netflix has greenlit an untitled supernatural creature series from Jesse McKeown, a veteran screenwriter on hit TV series like The Umbrella Academy and 19-2.

Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, directors of content for Netflix Canada, said of the commission on Thursday: “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.

But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.

The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Loki is one of those shows that can’t quite fit into one genre. Yes, it’s a Disney Plus series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is so much more than that.

The TV series includes time travel, alternate worlds, saving universes, and so much character development that it’s hard to find something just as good. This is a story where the villain becomes the hero, continuing a journey started before his death.

Thirteen years after Mummy Is Coming, filmmaker Cheryl Dunye is moving forward with a new feature film, Black Is Blue. Based on her 2014 short film of the same name, the project is being developed under her production company, Jingletown Films. It has been selected for CineMart at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where Dunye is looking for international co-producers.

She came up with the idea for this ‘sci-fi trans erotic thriller‘ during the pandemic while rewatching classic films. Her love for noir, especially Billy Wilder’s ‘Sunset Boulevard,’ played a big role in shaping the story. While I eventually came around to it, Resident Evil 4 felt like a turning point in the series that took it down a path I wasn’t really interested in. It moved into something more action-oriented, taking me away from the classic drama of “Umbrella Academy” zombies with gameplay that focuses more on thrills than chills.

To me, the end of the era that I loved was Resident Evil – Code: Veronica on the Sega Dreamcast. I was a day one Dreamcast guy, so Code Veronica was a no-brainer for me, showing off what a new console generation could do with the zombie franchise that I loved. Even though it ended up being one of my favorites in the series, I haven’t played it since it came out.

Now, 25 years later, I fired it up again for its quarter century anniversary to see how it holds up against the rest of the series.

Christopher Nolan has is taking four more actors on his hero’s journey — and most are familiar faces to his world.

Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton round out the supporting cast of The Odyssey, Nolan’s adaptation of the epic poem by Homer that he is making for Universal.

Page is a Nolan veteran, having the memorable role of architecture grad student Ariadne in 2010’s Inception. Patel too is a Nolan alum, with a role in 2020’s Tenet, while Irwin had the memorable voice role of Tars the robot in Interstellar.

Universal had no comment on the castings. The quartet of actors join a cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie.

The studio describes the project as a “mythic action epic shot across the world across the world using brand new Imax film technology.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.

The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”

On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.

The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

Gravitas Ventures has picked up the U.S. and Canadian rights from Visit Films for Delaney Buffett’s upcoming movie “Adult Best Friends.”

“Adult Best Friends,” which premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, tells the story of a woman who goes on a weekend trip with her co-dependent best friend, where she intends to break the news that she is getting married. The two friends find their paths diverging in their 30s and the trip takes some unexpected turns, including a chance encounter with a classmate and a bachelor party.

Buffett co-wrote “Adult Best Friends” with her real-life best friend Katie Corwin. The two also star in the film alongside Zachary Quinto (“Brilliant Minds”), Mason Gooding (“Scream”) and Cazzie David (“The Umbrella Academy”).

A feature film based on the acclaimed Sony PlayStation video game “Horizon Zero Dawn” is in “early stages” of development as a joint project between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions.

Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, announced the news as part of Sony’s presentation Monday night at CES 2025.

If you’re not a gamer but the project still sounds familiar, it’s because “Horizon Zero Dawn” was previously announced — back in 2022 — as a Netflix series developed by “The Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman in partnership with Michelle Lovretta (“Killjoys”). At some point since then however, the show was quietly shelved.

No reason for the shift from TV series to feature film was given during Qizilbash’s announcement, but it’s notable that in June of 2024, Rolling Stone published an exposé in which Blackman was accused of bullying and other toxic behavior by staff members. Blackman has denied all accusations.

Exclusive: Actress Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) has boarded The Runt, an Oscar-qualified live-action short film written, directed and produced by Emmy-nominated TV veteran Christy Stratton (Modern Family), as executive producer.

In 2024, Netflix ended many fan-favorite series, like The Umbrella Academy, Elite, and Vikings: Valhalla, and kicked off the final season of Cobra Kai. There were new seasons of beloved hit such as Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, and Outer Banks. And to top it all off, Netflix managed to release handfuls upon handfuls of new shows the world couldn't stop binge-watching.

For a certain generation of kids who grew up in the early 2000s, Orlando Brown was an essential part of their upbringing. He played one of the core characters in the series "That's So Raven," which is regarded as one of the best Disney Channel original shows ever. Brown starred as Eddie Thomas alongside Raven-Symoné's Raven and Anneliese van der Pol's Chelsea in all 100 episodes of the series. The series also spawned a spin-off in the form of "Cory in the House."

Not long after the show went off the air in 2007, Brown ostensibly disappeared from Hollywood. NBCUniversal vice chair Bonnie Hammer is set to exit her role at the end of the year following the expiration of her current contract, an individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap.

The decision to depart is hers, the individual said, and is unrelated to parent company Comcast’s recent announcement that it will spin off its cable network portfolio.

Hammer, who has over 40 years of experience in the television business, has had a hand in shows including “Suits,” “Umbrella Academy,” “Taken,” “Psych,” “Monk,” “Mr. Robot,” “The Sinner,” “Homecoming,” “The Act,” “Dirty John” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

Netflix’s The Night Agent is looking to boost its ranks.

Genesis Rodriguez (Lioness) is in talks to join the espionage drama for its third season. Netflix has already greenlit a third installment of one of its most popular shows, which stars Gabriel Basso as a low-level FBI agent who’s thrust into a far-reaching conspiracy.

Rodriguez is set to be a regular on season three, which is set to begin filming soon in Istanbul and continue in New York early next year. Details on her role are being kept quiet for now.

Netflix declined comment.

Season two of The Night Agent, meanwhile, is scheduled to premiere Jan. 23. It will find Peter Sutherland (Basso) getting a chance to work as a Night Agent after his actions in season one. But working in the secretive organization of Night Action propels him into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply.

Ahead of the premiere of “The Night Agent” Season 2, Genesis Rodriguez could soon be joining Season 3.

Variety has learned from sources that Rodriguez is currently in talks for a role in Season 3, which was formally ordered at Netflix back in October. Exact character details are currently under wraps.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

This would be the latest spy thriller show in which Rodriguez will star. She currently appears in Season 2 of the Paramount+ series “Lioness” and recently starred in the Kevin Smith feature “The 4:30 Movie.” Her other recent credits include the shows “Neon,” “The Umbrella Academy,” “Time After Time,” and “Big Hero 6: The Series,” while her film credits include “Tusk,” “Casa de mi Padre,” “Man on a Ledge,” and “Run All Night.”

Ahead of The Night Agent Season 2’s January 23 premiere, Genesis Rodriguez (Lioness) has entered negotiations for a role in the hit conspiracy thriller’s third season, Deadline can reveal.

Reps for Netflix declined comment. While specifics as to Rodriguez’s part are under wraps, we hear that she’ll be a series regular. As Deadline previously reported, production on S3 is set to kick off in Istanbul at the end of this year, with a New York shoot to follow in 2025. Netflix announced the show’s Season 3 renewal in October.

There isn’t quite something that will check every single box at the same time, but there are some great shows out there that work for many.

Every once in a while, the stars will align to make for some truly fascinating television, not because of anything going on in the script but because of the context of the actors involved. The short-lived 2000 TV series "Freaks and Geeks," for instance, is fascinating not just because it's good TV but because so many of the actors in it were just a few years away from becoming massive stars.
