Plot details are scarce, but the trades state that the series will be set in a remote town in Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province. Netflix has greenlit an untitled supernatural creature series from Jesse McKeown, a veteran screenwriter on hit TV series like The Umbrella Academy and 19-2.
Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, directors of content for Netflix Canada, said of the commission on Thursday: “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability.”
McKeown’s TV writing credits include The Big Charade, Robson Arms, Rogue, Republic of Doyle and DaVinci’s Inquest. The Canadian limited series will be set and be shot in Newfoundland, on the country’s Atlantic coast as the six-parter will center on a mysterious sea creature terrorizing a remote town, with a hard-bitten fisherman having to fight to protect his family, his community and his vanishing way of life.

You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.
But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.
The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.
What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.
Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Loki is one of those shows that can’t quite fit into one genre. Yes, it’s a Disney Plus series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is so much more than that.
The TV series includes time travel, alternate worlds, saving universes, and so much character development that it’s hard to find something just as good. This is a story where the villain becomes the hero, continuing a journey started before his death.
With the series now seemingly at an end, there’s no doubt that you want to find something else to watch. Here are five great shows to check out next, and not all of them are Marvel!

Thirteen years after Mummy Is Coming, filmmaker Cheryl Dunye is moving forward with a new feature film, Black Is Blue. Based on her 2014 short film of the same name, the project is being developed under her production company, Jingletown Films. It has been selected for CineMart at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where Dunye is looking for international co-producers.
She came up with the idea for this ‘sci-fi trans erotic thriller‘ during the pandemic while rewatching classic films. Her love for noir, especially Billy Wilder’s ‘Sunset Boulevard,’ played a big role in shaping the story. The film follows a Black trans couple brought together by AI: Blue, a former tech executive in her 40s, and Black, a struggling AI programmer in his 30s.

Thirteen years after “Mummy Is Coming,” American filmmaker Cheryl Dunye (“The Watermelon Woman”) is gearing up to produce a new feature film with “Black Is Blue” through her production company Jingletown Films. The film, loosely based on her eponymous 2014 short, is one of the projects selected at this year’s CineMart, the co-production market of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Speaking with Variety at the festival, Dunye says the idea for the “sci-fi trans erotic thriller” first came to her during the early days of the pandemic when she began rewatching classic films and thinking of her love for film noir, particularly Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard.”
The film is set to chronicle the erotic tale of a Black trans couple brought together by AI technology: Blue, a 40-something Black trans woman who was once a successful tech executive for a multinational in control of the world’s largest DNA database,...

While I eventually came around to it, Resident Evil 4 felt like a turning point in the series that took it down a path I wasn’t really interested in. It moved into something more action-oriented, taking me away from the classic drama of “Umbrella Academy” zombies with gameplay that focuses more on thrills than chills.
To me, the end of the era that I loved was Resident Evil – Code: Veronica on the Sega Dreamcast. I was a day one Dreamcast guy, so Code Veronica was a no-brainer for me, showing off what a new console generation could do with the zombie franchise that I loved. Even though it ended up being one of my favorites in the series, I haven’t played it since it came out.
Now, 25 years later, I fired it up again for its quarter century anniversary to see how it holds up against the rest of the series.

Christopher Nolan has is taking four more actors on his hero’s journey — and most are familiar faces to his world.
Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton round out the supporting cast of The Odyssey, Nolan’s adaptation of the epic poem by Homer that he is making for Universal.
Page is a Nolan veteran, having the memorable role of architecture grad student Ariadne in 2010’s Inception. Patel too is a Nolan alum, with a role in 2020’s Tenet, while Irwin had the memorable voice role of Tars the robot in Interstellar.
Universal had no comment on the castings. The quartet of actors join a cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie.
The studio describes the project as a “mythic action epic shot across the world across the world using brand new Imax film technology.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”
The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. The film’s star, Karla Sofia Gascón, is also predicted to make history as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress. Major media conglomerates often produce original TV series through their production companies, selling and licensing the content externally as a key short-term revenue strategy. However, the industry faces the challenge of balancing strategic licensing with the need to grow their own streaming platforms through exclusive titles to attract and retain subscribers — especially under the pressure of Wall Street’s ever-changing expectations.
To explore this trade-off, Parrot analyzed the potential value “The Umbrella Academy” could have brought to Peacock if it had been available there instead of licensed to Netflix, using Parrot Analytics’ Streaming Economics insights.
Produced by Universal Content Productions, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, “The Umbrella Academy” premiered on Netflix in 2019 and became one of its most in-demand shows, cultivating a dedicated fanbase. In Q3 2024, following the release of its fourth and final season, the series was Netflix’s second-highest contributor to subscriber acquisition revenue, accounting for approximately 0.8% of acquisition revenue for the quarter.

A feature film based on the acclaimed Sony PlayStation video game “Horizon Zero Dawn” is in “early stages” of development as a joint project between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, announced the news as part of Sony’s presentation Monday night at CES 2025.
If you’re not a gamer but the project still sounds familiar, it’s because “Horizon Zero Dawn” was previously announced — back in 2022 — as a Netflix series developed by “The Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman in partnership with Michelle Lovretta (“Killjoys”). At some point since then however, the show was quietly shelved.
No reason for the shift from TV series to feature film was given during Qizilbash’s announcement, but it’s notable that in June of 2024, Rolling Stone published an exposé in which Blackman was accused of bullying and other toxic behavior by staff members. Blackman has denied all accusations.

After three seasons full of twists, turns, and dark revelations, The Umbrella Academy ended with its fourth season, which sees the Hargreeves dealing with one more apocalypse, though one that gets a bit too personal. After the ending of The Umbrella Academy season 3 took the Hargreeves, Lila, and Sparrow Ben to a new timeline designed by Reginald, season 4 catches up with them after parting ways to live normal lives.
After living without powers for a while, the Hargreeves are brought back together and given their powers back to go on a rescue mission – but, much to their dismay, they need their father’s help. The Hargreeves prepare to face one more apocalypse, though one that involves Ben, thus getting too personal. The Hargreeves and Reginald meet...

There is nothing like a good romance story on a TV show. Viewers love seeing beloved characters slowly fall in love, becoming closer and closer over time as their connection develops in a way that feels both believable and well-deserved. Watching this play out can be a hugely satisfying experience for the viewer. The problem, however, is that not every love story shown on TV is handled with this much attention and care, regardless of whether it's an intense drama or a long-running sitcom.
Unfortunately, many TV romances end up doing little more than annoying the fans of their shows. This negative reaction is bound to happen when the relationship feels unnatural, unrealistic, or simply unnecessary. After all, no one wants to have the quality of an otherwise great series diminished by dedicating too much time to an unwanted romance. Regardless of whether they offered happy endings to the show's characters,...

The Jet Li science fiction movie from 2001 where the famed martial artist played nine different characters accurately predicted a big franchise trend in the 2020s. Jet Li's best movies highlight his legendary abilities within the action genre, with many titles such as Hero and Fearless showcasing both his physical prowess and his strong acting skills. However, the action genre was not the only one to experience Jet Li's talents, especially in the early 2000s as he branched out into telling other kinds of stories.
Jet Li, during that time frame, tried to establish himself in the science fiction genre through his starring role in the 2001 film The One. While that film ended up being one of his less popular additions, it did allow Jet Li's wushu fighting style to be displayed in new ways and let the film experiment with certain concepts. Supacell delivered a fresh superhero story that immediately grabbed attention with a thrilling concept and spectacularly executed episodes in the first season. Netflix has tried several times to get into the superhero genre of TV shows. While they initially found great success with Marvel's Daredevil and a handful of related shows that didn't perform as well, Marvel eventually reclaimed their IP and left Netflix scrambling for a replacement. Again, the streaming giant found success with The Umbrella Academy, a series based on comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, but with that show now concluded, they are again searching for another super show.
Along the way, Netflix has commissioned a number of smaller graphic novel adaptations, including Jupiter's Legacy, I Am Not Okay With This, and Dead Boy Detectives, but all of these shows were canceled after just one season due to not hitting the goals Netflix hoped for. However,...

2024 had a lot of great sci-fi and fantasy TV shows, but sadly, a few that let viewers down!
Over the past 12 months, fans got to enjoy a lot of genre TV, from returning hits like The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon to great new shows like Fallout. There were also a few duds here and there, many of which came and went without much buzz. Not all of these shows were bad, some many were disappointing. Some were parts of franchies that came up short and others were new efforts that landed with a thud.
Here at the end of the year, we're remembering the 10 biggest sci-fi/fantasy TV shows that let people down. Not every show can be a winner. Just ask fans of these series:

The Perfect Peeves Actor For Harry Potter's Remake Just Wrapped Up A Beloved 4-Season Netflix Series
Rumors are flying about the casting of the upcoming Harry Potter TV show, but there is one actor who has to play Peeves, rumors or not. Peeves is one of the iconic ghosts from Hogwarts, but he never appeared in the Harry Potter movies. Peeves, along with Nearly Headless Nick, is one of the best ghosts in the castle, and he should definitely be explored in HBO's TV show. After all, one of the reasons for HBO devising the show was to go into Harry Potter in detail and carve out a place for characters that the movies couldn't include.
The Potterverse movies all displayed a wealth of excellent fantasy creatures, from the hippogriffs to the nifflers, but Harry Potter's ghosts have personalities to rival the witches and wizards. Peeves was an absolute scoundrel in Harry Potter, and he would bring a guaranteed level of fun to the show, along with Fred and George,...

Ritu Arya is speaking out about the most controversial story in The Umbrella Academy. The Netflix superhero show concluded in August 2024 after a four-season run that saw numerous apocalypses. Arya, who played Lila, was involved in a romance with Aidan Gallagher's Five in the final episodes. That relationship developed even though Lila was already in a long-term relationship with his brother, David Castañeda's Diego. The arc drew outcry, which explains why the Umbrella Academy season 4 ending remains extremely divisive.
In an interview with Collider about her new show, Paris Has Fallen, Arya addressed some of the controversy around Lila's ending. She argues that, while she knew it would spark concern from viewers, she is "proud" to have created those conversations. She does believe that the show needed more space to tell its story, as the six-episode final season made it difficult to adequately tell its expansive narrative. Check...

Huge pressure is on The Boys to stick the landing in season 5, but Netflix's botched attempt at ending its own subversive superhero series should serve as a cautionary tale. The glut of superhero movies and TV shows that dominated the 2000s and 2010s triggered an anti-superhero wave in response. At the vanguard of that counter-movement were Prime Video's The Boys and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, but now that rebellious second wave has gently started receding.
The Umbrella Academy ended in August 2024 with its fourth season, while The Boys season 5 will bring Prime Video's show to a close in 2026. Netflix may have jumped off the "superheroes with a twist" train first, but the form and execution of that leap left a lot to be desired. The Umbrella Academy season 4 went as smoothly as Hughie's New Year's resolution to go an entire season without getting covered in blood, and reviews and...

Ritu Arya is helping steer the ship in Paris Has Fallen. After holding guest star and supporting roles in everything from AMC's Humans to Doctor Who, the English actor found her breakout turn as Lila in the cast of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, starring in seasons 2-4 of the well-received graphic novel adaptation. Arya has also worked on a number of major motion projects in the past decade, namely with her supporting roles in Red Notice and Barbie.
In the TV installment of the Gerard Butler-led action movie franchise, Arya stars in Paris Has Fallen's cast as Zara Taylor, a new MI6 agent stationed in France. There, she finds herself partnered with protection officer Vincent Taleb (Tewfik Jallab) in an effort to stop former French Foreign Legion soldier-turned-terrorist Jacob Pearce (Sean Harris) in his quest for vengeance against the French government.

TV cancellations aren’t close to America’s most pressing problem headed into 2025 — but in an uncertain year for the entertainment industry, premature endings in creative workplaces pack as big a punch as ever.
Major guild strikes ended last year and the streaming bubble burst from 2022 has given platforms at least some time to recover since. Still, the countless impacts of Hollywood’s faltering business model could be felt throughout episodic and feature productions as dwindling work continued to move away from traditional opportunity hubs in Los Angeles. As film scenes in other U.S. states and Canada benefited from decline in Southern California, the swan song of peak television experienced an ongoing decrease in new series getting greenlit and an uptick in single-season cancellations.

Exclusive: Actress Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) has boarded The Runt, an Oscar-qualified live-action short film written, directed and produced by Emmy-nominated TV veteran Christy Stratton (Modern Family), as executive producer.
Walsh is just the latest to attach in that capacity today, following Brendan Gleeson with The Boat and Sharon Horgan with Calf. The project reunites her with Stratton, with whom she previously collaborated on the Emmy-nominated web series Everyone’s Crazy But Us.
The Runt follows Janet Bauer (Luna Martin), who like most 12-year-olds in 1979, lives for Friday nights at the Moonlight Rollerway. This particular Friday is special — it’s the last one before junior high starts. When Janet finds out the 8th grade girls have chosen her to be the 7th grade “runt,” she decides she must skate with a boy to prove her maturity and avoid this fate, which would ruin her life forever.

It's been a long year that went by in the blink of an eye, but in the midst of all 2024 had offer, there were so many great Netflix shows for us to binge. Some people like to focus on what we didn't get — new seasons of Stranger Things, Wednesday, You, etc. — but think of what we did get.
In 2024, Netflix ended many fan-favorite series, like The Umbrella Academy, Elite, and Vikings: Valhalla, and kicked off the final season of Cobra Kai. There were new seasons of beloved hit such as Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, and Outer Banks. And to top it all off, Netflix managed to release handfuls upon handfuls of new shows the world couldn't stop binge-watching.
While your picks for the best Netflix shows of 2024 might vary, here are four of our biggest highlights of the year, as well as a short list of more excellent picks!

Paris Has Fallen boasts an impressive cast of international stars, bringing humanity to the action-packed show. The series is the latest entry in the "Has Fallen" franchise. The show builds on the tone established by the Gerald Butler-led Olympus Has Fallen. Paris Has Fallen focuses on a series of attacks carried out in the French capital by an embittered former member of the French Foreign Legion named Jacob Pearce. Struggling to prevent further bloodshed are Vincent Taleb and Zara Taylor, a bodyguard and an Mi:6 agent both operating within the city.
Paris Has Fallen has plenty of intense action, but the real draw of the series is the compelling conspiracy that Pearce seeks to expose and how it impacts the people connected to it. The stars of the show hail from across Europe, bringing a natural diversity to a story that highlights the crimes and mistakes of the recent past.

For a certain generation of kids who grew up in the early 2000s, Orlando Brown was an essential part of their upbringing. He played one of the core characters in the series "That's So Raven," which is regarded as one of the best Disney Channel original shows ever. Brown starred as Eddie Thomas alongside Raven-Symoné's Raven and Anneliese van der Pol's Chelsea in all 100 episodes of the series. The series also spawned a spin-off in the form of "Cory in the House."
When a show runs for that long, the actors leave an impression on viewers. While Raven-Symoné went on to star in a successful sequel series titled "Raven's House," the same can't be said for Brown. Not long after the show went off the air in 2007, Brown ostensibly disappeared from Hollywood. Or, at the very least, he kept a relatively low-profile, save for when he was making headlines for less-than-great reasons.

Netflix’s The Night Agent is looking to boost its ranks.
Genesis Rodriguez (Lioness) is in talks to join the espionage drama for its third season. Netflix has already greenlit a third installment of one of its most popular shows, which stars Gabriel Basso as a low-level FBI agent who’s thrust into a far-reaching conspiracy.
Rodriguez is set to be a regular on season three, which is set to begin filming soon in Istanbul and continue in New York early next year. Details on her role are being kept quiet for now.
Netflix declined comment.

The Boys is one of the best shows on Prime Video right now. The problem is there are four seasons that are eight episodes long, and that’s it. You’ll get through that fast!
You can watch Gen V, the spin-off of the series. Again, there’s one season of that right now. It doesn’t take long to work through it. So, you need to find more shows that are like The Boys to watch.
This is a series that is more than just superheroes and vigilantes going up against each other. There are elements that touch on real-world politics, a discussion about relationships, and a touch on grief and loss throughout the series. There isn’t quite something that will check every single box at the same time, but there are some great shows out there that work for many.

Every once in a while, the stars will align to make for some truly fascinating television, not because of anything going on in the script but because of the context of the actors involved. The short-lived 2000 TV series "Freaks and Geeks," for instance, is fascinating not just because it's good TV but because so many of the actors in it were just a few years away from becoming massive stars.
Likewise, there's a 2007 episode of "Hannah Montana" that's interesting not because of the actual plot, which is pretty boilerplate relationship drama stuff, but because Larry David and Austin Butler are for some reason involved. Yes, that Larry David, the crotchety old man most famous for playing a childless, profanity-spewing jerk on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And yes, that Austin Butler, the guy who recently played a hairless psychopath in "Dune: Part Two."
Larry David was already pretty well-known by this point,...
