Like with Mashima's previous protagonists Haru Glory (from Rave Master) and Natsu Dragneel (from Fairy Tail), Shiki Granbell's given name is also a season-related reference. While Haru means "Spring", and Natsu means "Summer", for Shiki his name is Japanese for the term "Four Seasons".
