On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
In October 2024, we’re doing the Midnight Movie Monster Mash with films that challenge our understanding of evil characters and creatures just in time for Halloween.
First, read the spoiler-free Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, come back for the Bite: a breakdown of all the spoiler-y bits you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: A Genre Cannibal Comedy Worth Preserving — Maggots and All
Measured against classics like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and contemporary farmhouse fare like “Pearl,” “Motel Hell” is no blue ribbon winner. Still, this outrageously funky genre blend — a pitch-black horror comedy about screwy siblings turning motorists and motel guests into scrumptious jerky — deserves its a special spot in the greater midnight movie pantry.
From swingers seeking bestiality to an inexplicable hypnosis sequence,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.
First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: You’re Invited to the Worst School Dance Since “Carrie”
“He looks dead,” panics the teenaged Lola (Robin McLeavy) while surveying the unconscious body of her prom date Brent (Xavier Samuel) in the trunk of her dad’s car. “You’ve ruined it!”

Welcome to IndieWire After Dark, where we pick a new theme for our midnight movie programming every month!
Join us Friday nights at 9:30 p.m. Et to explore the best in fringe films — available at any hour in the streaming age.
Kick up your feet and get ready to take note. This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night.
IndieWire After Dark is practicing the fundamentals over the next four weeks, kicking off a fall semester of midnight movies that’s all about students, teachers, parents, and the lethal side of learning. Yes, the following recommendations are education-themed — but they’re also great building blocks for any new students in this school of cinema.
Not unlike Harvard, Yale, or the elite university in “Halloween H20,” the admissions rate for titles featured in our weekly watch-and-rewatch club is competitive. We want to see every Tubi, Freevee, and fringe Shudder effort out there.

Plot: Five women participate in a hiking retreat but only four come out the other side. Federal agents Aaron Falk and Carmen Cooper head into the mountains hoping to find their informant still alive.
Review: We reviewed the Australian mystery drama The Dry a couple of years ago. We enjoyed Eric Bana’s first Australian film after moving to Hollywood and found director Robert Connolly’s adaptation of Jane Harper’s novel to be refreshing. That film told the story of a federal investigator who returns home to investigate the murder of a childhood friend, which bears a distinct connection to a crime he himself was accused of decades prior. Bana and Connolly have reunited for the second novel in the Aaron Falk trilogy, Force of Nature. Carrying the subtitle that indicates it as a sequel to The Dry, Force of Nature is a substantially different story. Shifting from a...

If, by chance, you’ve never heard of Australian genre director Sean Byrne, you need to remedy that fact right away. While far from a household name, Byrne directed two of the best horror movies of the last twenty years – The Loved Ones in 2009 and The Devil’s Candy in 2015. The Loved Ones, in particular, is a gem, with star Robin McLeavy’s performance as high school stalker Lola, being one of the most memorable horror baddies in recent memory.
And now, it looks like Byrne is finally directing another film, with Variety revealing that he’s set to direct the horror flick Dangerous Animals, which stars Hassie Harrison (the Yellowstone girl who caused a major bunkhouse feud a few seasons back), Jai Courtney, and Josh Heuston.
Here’s what Variety has to say about the project:

“The only person who realizes she is missing is new love interest Moses (Hueston), who goes looking for Zephyr, only to be caught by the deranged murderer as well.”
Mister Smith Entertainment is bringing the project to the Cannes Market.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams puts a candy-colored lens over the hot pink horror sub-genre.
The color most associated with the horror genre is undoubtedly red. Not only the hue of blood and anger, it’s also the shade of the iconic devil – a masculine figure said to be the source of all evil. But in recent years a new color has emerged to evoke a different kind of rage. Hot pink has become the new tone of female-centered horror. An effeminate variation of blood red, this electric hue combines the strawberry tones of wholesome girlhood with the electric fires of female empowerment.

The 35th edition of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week is officially underway, marking the return of the annual fan-favorite weeklong shark celebration. Shark Week began in 1988 as a fun means of educating audiences on the aquatic predator, counteracting the negative representations of sharks in popular culture that began with the seminal aquatic horror feature Jaws (now available to stream on Peacock).
Jaws didn’t just make people afraid to go into the water; its massive blockbuster success inspired an enduring wave of “sharksploitation” horror that’s become a summer mainstay. Naturally, in celebration of Shark Week, this week’s streaming picks bring the aquatic terror. Shudder’s new documentary Sharksploitation breaks down this subgenre further, packed with insights from filmmakers and scientists alike, for further viewing to complete your Shark Week watchlists.

Cooper has led the nonprofit cinema since its first iteration in 1972 as a 50-seat loft space on the Upper West Side open only weekends, to a multi-million dollar operation with four screens and 500 seats in lower Manhattan. Ti West’s X introduced Pearl (Mia Goth), a woman driven mad by her lust and yearning for youth that her husband attempts to hide from his unexpected boarding guests. She finds them anyway and satiates her desire with unhinged violence. Just how unhinged this killer is gets fleshed out further in the prequel Pearl, now available on Digital and out on Blu-ray on November 15, solidifying her ranks as one of horror’s most memorable female killers.
Female killers compensate for their scarcity in horror with unpredictability, cruelty, and infectiously deranged personality. It’s often obsession that drives them, providing fascinating motivations that can make them uncomfortably relatable. Like Pearl, these ten female killers aren’t afraid to unleash pain and have racked up impressive body counts along the way.

Dates can go very wrong in horror movies. Carrie White's prom date with Tommy Ross goes up in flames before the last dance, in both Stephen King's novel "Carrie" and Brian De Palma's film adaptation. In Sean Byrne's Aussie horror movie "The Loved Ones," poor Brett doesn't even make it to his school dance after rejecting Lola, who hosts a macabre dance of her own. All grotesqueries of romantic relationships find screen time in the genre.

After the death of their adoptive mother, shy butcher Norman and his drama queen twin sister Annabelle leave the UK and adventure to Australia in search of their biological mother, but the local townsfolk of Two Heads Creek are hiding a dark secret… but aren’t they all when it comes to small towns in horror movies?

Avant-garde indie stalwarts Deerhoof unveiled a boisterous new track, “‘Farewell’ Symphony” from their upcoming album, Future Teenage Cave Artists, out May 29th via Joyful Noise Recordings.
“‘Farewell’ Symphony” is a frenetic cut, but Deerhoof expertly control the chaos as clattering drums, grizzly guitar riffs and singer Satomi Matsuzaki’s airy vocals combine into a mesmerizing freakout. The song borrows its title from Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, also known as the “Farewell” Symphony, and Deerhoof’s video for their track is a supercut of six performances of the original “Farewell” Symphony’s final movement,...

John Brumpton in ‘Measure for Measure.’
One of Australia’s hardest working actors, John Brumpton rarely turns down offers – except when he is asked to work for free.
In the past year he has played a rapist in Stephen Johnson’s Western High Ground, a gunslinger in the second season of Mystery Road, Hugo Weaving’s protector in Paul Ireland’s Measure for Measure and a worried dad in Jamie Helmer and Michael Leonard’s short The Diver, which premieres in competition in Venice.
IMDb lists 95 credits for the actor who made his screen debut in The Flying Doctors in 1989 and took up the profession after working as a surveyor and professional boxer.

With Halloween just around the corner, Streaming Observer decided to figure out the film most commonly considered people’s favorite horror movie in each of the 50 states. The results prove America has some great taste when it comes to the horror genre, with classics like “The Shining” and “The Exorcist” being named alongside some pretty surprising additions like Ana Lily Amirpour’s excellent “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” and Ti West’s throwback horror “The House of the Devil.”
Streaming Observer first culled a list of the most popular horror movies of all time using critical reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and data provided by Amazon MTurk surveying and other public sources (which might help explain why films like “This Is the End” have been categorized as horror). When the list was finalized, the company partnered with Mindnet Analytics and studied streaming trends using Google Trends to determine which...

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
This October, get ready to rock (queue bending guitar notes). Because Daily Dead productions brings you the rock event of the season with Heavy Metal Halloween (queue random explosion noises). Live, from whatever venue you want to call your house, we’ve got two face-melting, pants-dropping flicks that are sure to leave your guests on their knees worshipping at the altar of the gods of rock (queue the Rob Halford knock-off kind of, sort of, not really hitting a high note).
Okay, don’t worry. I’m not going to keep using the crappy concert ad gimmick, but this feature is going to lean heavy on the heavy metal. Think of this Halloween season double feature recommendation as an opening act and headliner that will make for a great show where metal is the connective thread, but each movie has its own tone and themes that will give at least...

‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Heathen SoulThe director of ‘The Loved Ones’ returns with another intense and suspenseful thriller.
Writer/director Sean Byrne’s debut feature, The Loved Ones, blew festival audiences (including us) away back in 2009 with thrills and suspense born from seeing a character we truly cared about fighting for his life against increasingly twisted and violent odds. It took three years before it actually opened in the Us, but it was worth the wait. Now Byrne’s equally intense follow-up film is finally being released… after premiering at film fests nearly two years ago.
Once again though, The Devil’s Candy is a blistering, intimate, heavy metal-tinged horror/thriller worth waiting for as it drops a loving family into a devilish nightmare where each violent chord brings them closer to a grim and grisly fate.

Out in limited theaters and on VOD this Friday from IFC Midnight is The Devil’s Candy, which was written and directed by Sean Byrne (the creative force behind the equally fantastic thriller The Loved Ones). The film stars Ethan Embry as an embattled father who will stop at nothing to keep his family—and particularly his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco)—safe from devilish forces in the form of a possessed man named Ray (portrayed by the always engaging Pruitt Taylor Vince).
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Byrne about how his latest film became a way to explore his own fears and insecurities—both personally and professionally—and how he enjoys trying to subvert horror fans' expectations whenever he takes the directorial reins. Byrne also discussed his thoughts on celebrating heavy metal culture for The Devil’s Candy, collaborating with his cast, and more.

The director opens up about how his fears inspired the heavy metal infused homage.
It’s hard to adequately describe The Devil’s Candy, Australian director Sean Byrne’s follow up to 2009’s The Loved Ones. The film, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was eventually picked up by IFC Midnight for U.S. distribution, is a pastiche of occult horror, demonic possession, and religious mania, while also offering viewers a truly poignant family drama. It’s a pure treat for horror fans but above all else, it’s metal as fuck — literally.
The Devil’s Candy follows the not-so-ordinary Hellman family who move into an isolated but spacious Texas farmhouse, which may be a gateway to something sinister. Ethan Embry stars as Jesse, a struggling painter, who bonds with his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco), over their shared love of heavy metal music. Shiri Appleby rounds up the family as Astrid, the...

Heavy metal and horror movies go together like chocolate and peanut butter, not least because of their shared fascination with Satan. The relationship between the trio goes back to the days when Ozzy Osbourne and his bandmates decided to name Black Sabbath after the Mario Bava movie playing across the street from their rehearsal space, and Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) revisits it once more for his sophomore horror feature, The Devil’s Candy. This time around, though, Byrne adds a twist by appealing to a growing and under-represented segment of the extreme art forms’ shared fan base: parents.
A long-haired, tattooed Ethan Embry stars as Jesse Hellman, a struggling painter who has passed on his love of all things metal to his preteen daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco). It was back in 2009 that Australian writer-director Sean Byrne burst onto the scene with his debut feature film, The Loved Ones, igniting a firestorm of positive praise that seemed poised to light the world on fire for this brash and seemingly fully formed talent. But, praise or not, 2009 was a difficult time for the independent film industry, with business models and release platforms seemingly changing by the day and, much like fellow festival darling All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Loved Ones became a victim of the changing landscape, languishing on the shelf for a frustrating length of time while the industry-at-large tried to get their shit together and ultimately squandered all that love and leaving Byrne spinning his wheels for far,...

I’ve enjoyed Ethan Embry’s on-screen work for a long time now, and it’s been great to see him keeping busy these days—from his work on Grace and Frankie, to his appearance on the season 6 premiere of The Walking Dead, to his fantastic performances in genre fare like Cheap Thrills, Late Phases, The Guest, and his recent role in Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy, which arrives in select theaters and on VOD on Friday, March 17th from IFC Midnight.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak in depth with Embry about his work on the film, and he discussed the appeal of playing a conflicted father who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. Embry also chatted about working with Byrne and how he hopes fans appreciate the way the filmmaker’s vision for The Devil’s Candy represents all the metal aficionados out there.

When it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2015, director Sean Byrne (who previously helmed the similarly scary-as-hell “The Loved Ones”) sent shockwaves through the circuit with his second feature horror film, “The Devil’s Candy.” The theatrical release of the film has long been awaited, especially after the feature received copious rave reviews at various festivals (current Rotten Tomatoes score? a very healthy 90%).
