John Stevenson and Mike Osborne's 2008 film "Kung Fu Panda," on its most basic level, serves as a spoof of a certain type of martial arts film made in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Many of the tropes of martial arts cinema infiltrated American cinemas in the 1990s and 2000s thanks to the stateside releases of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies, the success of the wuxia film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the constant bolstering of the genre by mega-fan Quentin Tarantino.
By 2008, so many American filmmakers had borrowed from Hong King cinema (including Tarantino himself with his "Kill Bill" movies), that even small children could recreate their tropes and clichés on the playground. Every kid could spot the characters: ancient wizened masters, a team of martial arts monks, and a feisty young comedic hotshot who seems ill-equipped for the asceticism of kung fu, but ultimately proves to be a champion.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation have unveiled the latest trailer for The Wild Robot, a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller.
The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.
Check out the super cute trailer below and see the movie in theaters September 27.
I love this trailer… can’t wait to see this!
The film definitely looks to be among this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Animated Feature. The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

Jean-Claude Van Damme has kept a fairly low profile compared to many other 80s action heroes. And that includes such non-genre appearances as voice acting in kids films like Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru as well as a cameo in the French comedy Haters. However, Darkness of Man sees him return to the Dtv action spotlight
As the film opens, Russel Hatch lies in a puddle of his own blood, bleeding out from several bullet wounds. He tells us in voice-over that, like every story, this began with a woman. And we go back to Miami two years prior when Hatch was an Interpol agent.

In American animation, talking animal movies are a dime-a-dozen, but the "Kung Fu Panda" series is a gem. A big part of the appeal comes from the charming lead performance of Jack Black as Dragon Warrior Po (read /Film's interview with Black on the "Kung Fu Panda" circuit here). Another reason is the Wuxia-inspired action, where the bouncy CGI complements the characters' acrobatics and allows filmmakers to execute "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" style wire-fu with no need for actual wires.
Then there's the other secret ingredient: the villains. In each of the four films made so far (with the "Kung Fu Panda 4" box office making it likely another chapter won't be far behind), Po faces a new adversary, one with a new power he must overcome while also advancing on his own spiritual journey. Pretty typical hero's journey stuff, but like in martial arts, it's all about the proper execution.

It’s a primate face-off at the box office this weekend, plus some old-fashioned Antichrist horror on the side. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” looks to stick on top of domestic charts, holding off the opening weekend bows of Universal’s beat-em-up “Monkey Man” and 20th Century Studios’ horror revival “The First Omen.”
That kaiju victory lap probably has less to do with the staying power of “The New Empire” than the strength of its competition though. The blockbuster monster mash earned $8.5 million on Friday, down a steep 77% from its opening day a week ago. “The New Empire” could be eyeing a drop north of 60% across the three-day frame — not a superlatively large decline from a blockbuster’s opening weekend, but still a pretty sizable one. It puts in perspective the impressively slim 44% drop that fellow Legendary production “Dune: Part Two” faced in its sophomore outing.

Some movie stars don’t lose their luster. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over domestic charts this weekend, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” scored $37 million from 3,861 venues across opening day and preview screenings. It’s an impressive debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace that was projected earlier this week, which had pegged an opening just north of $50 million.
“The New Empire” cost a substantial sum of $135 million to produce, but it’s getting off on the right, gigantic foot. Reviews have been mediocre — a notch down from the fairly positively received “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and way below the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. Nonetheless, audiences aren’t being swayed. The kaiju team-up seems to be playing well to crowds, after earning an “A-” grade from research firm Cinema Score.

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Po returns with his goofiness and is tasked by Master Shifu to train further and become the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace in Kung Fu Panda 4. Directed by Mike Mitchell, it was released earlier this month.
This is the fourth installment in this franchise, and the third part was released in 2016. The martial arts animated comedy films have entertained the audience, especially the young ones, since 2008. Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 had a rock ‘em sock ‘em weekend at the international box office, adding $55.3M from 69 markets for a $135M overseas running cume, and $268.2M global.
The frame for the fourquel was led by China with $25.7M including last session’s previews. The franchise has historically performed well in that mercurial market, and, along with the continued success of Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune: Part Two there ($43.9M running China total) it’s good news for a market that has increasingly turned inward. Should hope spring? Let’s wait on that one…
More below on KFP4 and Dune 2 overall. In the meantime, the new opener this weekend was Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The Gil Kenan-directed sequel is on a staggered rollout and grossed $16.4M from its first 25 international markets.

Following Kung Fu Panda 4’s kick-ass start through its first two weekends, the DreamWorks franchise made its way to a pretty major milestone. With four titles under the renowned franchise banner, the animated films have now surpassed the $2B mark at the box office. But while this achievement turned out to be groundbreaking for DreamWorks, it simultaneously created a huge obstacle for Timothée Chalamet’s Dune 2.

Thanks to a kick-butt start by "Kung Fu Panda 4" through its first two weekends, the DreamWorks franchise as a whole has passed a pretty major milestone. Across four movies, the animated franchise has now surpassed the $2 billion mark at the box office. Over 16 years and through several enemies, Jack Black's Po has endured multiple decades to help make this one of the biggest animated movie franchises of all time. Skadoosh.
"Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the charts through its first two weekends and has, thus far, taken in $187.1 million worldwide against a very reasonable $85 million production budget -- by far the cheapest entry in the series to date. That has pushed the franchise to just over $2 billion collectively. The highest-grossing entry to date remains 2011's "Kung Fu Panda 2" with $664.8 million worldwide. Interestingly, that's also the only movie of the four that didn't open atop the charts when it debuted.

Dune: Part Two is one cinematic marvel, not just because of the story and performances, but also because of how Denis Villeneuve adapted the elements from the books. For instance, the film included the scene where Paul Atreides finally gains mastery over the sandworms and becomes a Sandrider. However, Villeneuve intentionally removed one plothole from the scene, which could have caused significant confusion among the viewers.

Dune 2 has already surpassed the box office collection of Villeneuve’s first film. By the end of the third week of its run, the film grossed $494.7 million at the global box office, closing in on the $500 million milestone.

"Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the box office over the weekend, managing to overtake last week's champion "Dune: Part Two." Make no mistake, nobody is crying for Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic as the sequel managed to stay atop the charts internationally over the weekend. But with the latest entry in the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, Universal has yet another animated hit on its hands. More than that, the movie's success out of the gate has cemented Jack Black's status as an unquestionable movie star capable of putting butts in seats.
The latest from DreamWorks Animation pulled in $58.3 million over the weekend, easily giving it the number one spot over "Dune" ($46 million). It's impressive for a few reasons. For one, pre-release expectations had Black's return as Po the panda pulling in less than $40 million. So the fact that the film outperformed expectations en route to a chart-topping performance is...

Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two held strongly in its sophomore session at the international box office, adding $81M to handily cross the $200M overseas milestone, and reaching $367.5M globally.
We’ll dig further into Dune 2’s second frame below, including its China start. In the meantime, let’s look at what’s new this weekend.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 came out kicking as it begins a staggered overseas rollout. The fourquel opened to $22.2M in 41 markets which rep just 23% of the international landscape, and put the global debut at $80.5M. Spain was the only major in this first suite as the Jack Black-starrer will continue adding markets in the coming weeks to align with holiday play; it goes to China on March 22.
The offshore start, excluding previews, is bigger than Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 in like-for-like markets at today’s rates.

Universal and DreamWork’s animated adventure “Kung Fu Panda 4” topped the domestic box office, earning a solid $58.3 million from 4,035 theaters in its opening weekend.
It marks the biggest debut of the franchise since the original, 2008’s “Kung Fu Panda” ($60 million), overtaking the start of the two prior entries, 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” ($41 million) and 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” ($47.6 million), not adjusted for inflation.
“Family audiences were primed to come out and have fun with a much-beloved franchise,” says Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “Animated movies tend to leg out. We anticipate a tremendous corridor.”
Internationally, the fourth film in the martial arts-inspired animated comedy collected $22 million from 41 markets for a global tally of $80 million. This installment cost $85 million to produce, a lower price tag than the first three movies, each of which cost about $150 million. Two legendary heroes are battling at the box office this weekend: the Dragon Warrior and the Lisan al Gaib.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” will duke it out at the box office. So far, Universal’s animated, family friendly flick has made $3.8 million in previews at the box office from 4,035 North American theaters.
It’s expected to be a close box office battle, but Jack Black’s karate-loving panda Po has a slight edge over Timothee Chalamet’s intergalactic hero Paul Atreides. “Kung Fu Panda 4” is projected to make between $45 million and $50 million in its opening weekend, while “Dune: Part Two” is on track for $40 million to $45 million in its second weekend of release.
The lack of family movies at theaters should bode well for “Kung Fu Panda 4.” Besides “Dune: Part Two” reinvigorating the theater business last week, there hasn’t been another box office...

Since the original “Kung Fu Panda” debuted in 2008, Po, voiced by Jack Black, has been a very busy Dragon Warrior. There have been two sequels, 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” and 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and 123 episodes of television centered on the DreamWorks Animation franchise. That’s a lot of adventures, quests, fights, and dumplings for Po to experience over a relatively short period of time.

Get ready for Kung Fu Panda 4, which is coming in just 2 days. Started back in 2008, the series explores the story of Po—a panda who learns martial arts.
Known for its humor and action, the Kfp series is a Dreamworks favorite. Now, the upcoming fourth installment continues Po’s journey as the Dragon Warrior.

The third installment of the franchise hit theaters seven years ago and became one of the top-grossing films of 2016.
Despite its success, the crown for the most successful movie in the Kung Fu Panda series still belongs to Kung Fu Panda 2. The sequel to the first flick pulled in a staggering $665 million (via Box Office Mojo) worldwide.
But why does it stand out? Well, there’s one big reason behind its success, which led many to believe that Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best entry in the franchise so far.

The Kung Fu Panda franchise is awaiting the release of its fourth film, which has come a long way from its concept of an anthropomorphic animal learning kung fu. Starring Jack Black as Po, Kung Fu Panda 4 sees many familiar characters such as Master Shifu, Tai Lung, and Kai, while introducing new villains such as The Chameleon.
The first film was known for its bizarre concept of a Panda learning kung fu and was one of the most anticipated films of 2008. The film was one of the commercially successful films by DreamWorks Animation, earning over $631 million. While a simplistic comedy with action, the concept of Kung Fu Panda was reportedly inspired by the iconic film Kung Fu Hustle.

It’s a box office battle of the sequels as Universal and Dreamworks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” vies for first place with “Dune: Part Two” on domestic charts.
The fourth “Kung Fu Panda” movie looks to collect $45 million to $50 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” is projected to add $40 million to $45 million in its second outing.

It’s been 8 years since fans have been asking for a new installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and their requests were eventually met, with the fourth film now being weeks away from its debut. And following the standard maintained by the past three entries, fans are reasonably hyped to see what the studio has in store for them, which, not long ago, delivered Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
However, the early reviews for the Jack Black-led movie have had fans worried, as it appears, Kung Fu Panda 4 might not surpass the bar set by its predecessors.

With Kung Fu Panda 4 arriving in theaters soon, my mind has of course been occupied with thoughts of the original three films. From 2008 to 2016, the Jack Black-led animated franchise went from an almost immediately-dismissed joke premise to a worldwide phenomenon; garnering critical praise and a massive fanbase over the course of the trilogy.
Now, eight years on from the third entry and with a new one on the horizon, how do the original three hold up? Does the humor still work? Are the action scenes as breathtaking now as they were back then? Is there still life left in these characters? Well, there’s only one way to find out.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). After his uncredited studio work on Kung Fu Panda 2‘s script and his independent feature Anomalisa, Charlie Kaufman is expanding his animation resume. He’s scripted the new DreamWorks animation Orion and the Dark, which is directed by Sean Charmatz and arrives on Netflix in just a few weeks. With a voice cast featuring Jacob Tremblay, Paul Walter Hauser, Angela Bassett, Colin Hanks, Natasia Demetriou, Golda Rosheuvel, Nat Faxon, Aparna Nancherla, Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gugino, and, yes, even Werner Herzog, the first trailer has now arrived today.
Here’s the synopsis: “Orion seems a lot like your average elementary school kid –– shy, unassuming, harboring a secret crush. But underneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent anxiety, completely consumed by irrational fears of bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, murderous gutter clowns, even falling off a cliff. But of all his fears, the thing he...

Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

Netflix’s movie selection will make this a September to remember. From an abundance of romantic comedies and dramedies arriving on the streamer this month to fun-loving animation that tells heartfelt stories, there is no shortage of stream-worthy content as the colder months approach. While fall technically does not start until Sept. 21, this list may or may not supply some watch suggestions for pumpkin spice season.

Whenever you think about martial arts, whose name springs to mind? For me, it’s Jackie Chan, followed by the others.
Jackie Chan, a legend in the world of martial arts, created his patented style of fighting. This style involves executing audacious stunts and employing clever maneuvers.
He actively utilizes his surroundings and props. With this unique approach, he swiftly defeats his enemies. Jackie Chan consistently emerges victorious despite the number of adversaries he faces.

Growing up, I had an enjoyable time watching numerous Jackie Chan movies.
From “The Legend of Drunken Master” to “Rush Hour,” it was impossible to be bored with Jackie’s movies.
The sheer mastery exhibited by Jackie Chan has solidified his position as an iconic figure in the world of martial arts.
However, while Jackie excels at martial arts, I am particularly captivated by the comedic elements in his movies.

Charlie Kaufman is known for his mind-bending script work on projects like “Adaptation” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” But his next project will be entirely more genial – an original DreamWorks Animation feature called “Orion and the Dark,” coming to Netflix in 2024. The announcement was made at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as part of a larger DreamWorks panel.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the project stars Jacob Tremblay as Orion, a scaredy-cat indoor kid (described in the official synopsis as “a ball of adolescent anxiety”) and Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, the living embodiment of the night and the thing Orion is most scared of. Director Sean Charmatz, a DreamWorks veteran of the “Trolls Holiday Special,” stressed that, even though it’s a DreamWorks movie on Netflix it “has all of the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it.” (Kaufman previously worked on “Kung Fu Panda 2” for the studio.

This was supposed to be the first “business as usual” summer movie season after Covid. Then the WGA strike came.
The Hollywood writers’ strike effects on TV were swift and obvious, like the shuttering of late-night television. The effects on the movies could play out over a far longer timetable, insidiously bleeding an already wounded industry.
Everyone agrees, with a few specific exceptions, that moviegoers returning to theaters won’t see the strike. “The movies for 2023 and 2024 have pretty much been written. In many cases, they’ve already been filmed,” AMC CEO Adam Aron noted Friday on his company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts. He was just the latest in a string of executives to reassure Wall Street of the strike’s limited impact.
