News broke on Friday that Netflix had axed the crime dramedy after just one season.

The sun has officially set on The Brothers Sun: Netflix has cancelled the Michelle Yeoh crime dramedy after one season, TVLine has confirmed.

The action-packed series starred Oscar winner Yeoh as Eileen, the matriarch of a powerful Taiwanese crime family. Her assassin son Charles (Justin Chien) returned to L.A. to protect Eileen and her clueless son Bruce (Sam Song Lei) after the death of his father.

We’re now at the end of 2023, and the list of canceled Netflix shows for the year is now complete. Below, we’ll look at all the high-profile cancelations (that have been announced anyway) as of December 2023.

Cancelations are a painful part of being a Netflix subscriber. There’s nothing worse than starting a show only to discover that it’ll never properly conclude. Netflix isn’t the only network by any means to cancel, but given the scale of the service globally and the amount of content it produces, it’s easy to see why Netflix is the boogeyman.

With that said, Netflix does renew plenty, with over 150 shows at any given time set to return for future seasons.

There will also be lots and lots of shows that fall outside of this list into two camps.

Naturally ending shows include The Crown, Firefly Lane, and Never Have I Ever.

Streaming giant Netflix has always said that the decisions whether to renew a show or not are based on performance vs. cost. The release today of What We Watched, a Netflix report on global viewed hours for 18,000 titles — original and licensed — from January to June of 2023 provides context on the calls the streamer made for seasons that debuted during that period.

It won’t come as much of a consolation to Shadow and Bone fans, who are still reeling from the fantasy drama’s cancellation after two seasons, but it was the most watched English-language scripted series from that period to get the axe, amassing 192.9M hours viewed from its March 16 debut through end of June to rank #26.

Since its debut last month, Blue Eye Samurai has proven to be a well-received hit for Netflix, so it should come as no surprise that Netflix has officially renewed the animated series for a second season.

Blue Eye Samurai tells the story of Mizu (Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking the deliverance of revenge.

Netflix has dropped the axe on five of its shows. The streaming service has cancelled live-action shows Shadow and Bone and Glamorous, as well as animated shows Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall. In sharing her disappointment about Shadow and Bone‘s recent cancellation at Netflix, book author Leigh Bardugo has revealed that the planned Six of Crows spinoff has also been scrapped.

Shadow And Bone, Glamorous and Agent Elvis are among the five shows Netflix is cancelling, it’s been announced.

Netflix has announced that it’s cancelling a handful of its original TV shows in the wake of the recent Hollywood strikes. The shows affected are, in no particular order, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, Captain Fall and Shadow And Bone.

Of these, Shadow And Bone is perhaps the most high-profile; a fantasy series based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, it was headed up by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Heisserer (he wrote the script for Arrival). Featuring a sprawling ensemble cast which included Jessie Mei, Kit Young and Zoe Wanamaker, Shadow And Bone ran for two seasons and was generally well received, with Netflix – which is usually secretive about viewing figures – saying that the first season had been watched by 55m households worldwide.

Deadline has reported that Netflix has canceled a number of their shows, including Shadow and Bone, Agent Elvis, Glamorous, Farzar, and Captain Fall.

Unfortunately, a major factor in these cancelations has to do with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. With work at a standstill for several months, networks and streamers haven’t been able to make their projected launches, which means big gaps between seasons. This isn’t a problem for successful shows, but for ones that may have been on the bubble, not to mention expensive, it was the final nail in the coffin. We can certainly expect to see more of these cancelations as streaming services and networks take stock of their slate following the strikes.

Netflix has cut several original series as it assesses its slate after the end of two industry strikes.

The streamer has canceled its dramas Shadow and Bone and Glamorous, along with a trio of adult animated series — Agent Elvis, Captain Fall and Farzar. Shadow and Bone ends after two seasons, while the other four are all one and done.

The cancellations come as Netflix, along with other outlets, considers what it has in its pipeline and how potentially long layoffs between seasons for its series might impact performance. Production on a number of series is restarting in the weeks after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike (and writers have been at work since late September, following the end of their labor action), but it’s unlikely any of the five canceled shows would have made it back onto Netflix screens before late in 2024 (if not 2025).

Netflix has canceled five original series in the aftermath of the Hollywood double strike. The streamer decided not to renew live-action dramas “Shadow and Bone” and the Kim Cattrall-led “Glamorous,” along with animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzar” and “Captain Fall.”

The news comes as the streamer evaluates the impact of the long work stoppage related to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There have been cancellations and un-renewals across the industry related to the production halt, with many freshman series particularly vulnerable since it would take too long for them to turn around new episodes and stay in the cultural conversation.

Exceptions include hit series like “The Night Agent” and “One Piece,” who’s impressive debuts guaranteed them quick renewals even during the strikes.

“Shadow and Bone” is the only sophomore series in the bunch. A hit in its first season, the show is inspired by the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo.

“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.

As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

Ignorance is bliss, especially for the credulous ones like Captain Jonathan Fall, who tend to miss out on social cues big time. Captain Fall is the latest addition to Netflix’s gallery of original adult-oriented animated series, which, for a surprising change, is really well done, humorous, and will surely take the viewers on a voyage filled with crime scenes, sex, violence, and ignorant stupidity. The creators of the series, Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, the same creative duo behind the brilliant period comedy series Norsemen, have used their firm grip on deadpan and situational humor in their debut cartoon gig to full effect. The result is a very topical, unapologetically wild series that uses the advantages of the animated medium in the best ways to showcase the fortunes and misfortunes that befall the eponymous character.

Netflix will add plenty of action films and summer classics in the month of July. Captain Fall is ready to set sail on Netflix.

The new animated comedy series from Norseman creators Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen features voiceovers work Jason Ritter, Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Svu), Lesley-Ann Brandt and Anthony Carrigan (Barry). It will drop July 28.

The comedy follows a wet-behind-the-ears, yet good-hearted sea captain who unwittingly finds himself at the helm of a smuggling ship for a terrible international cartel who’s using him as a fall guy in case the authorities ever catch up to them. It marks the first animated comedy for Helgaker and Torgersen.

Netflix will drop 10 episodes of the series that was developed and executive produced by Helgaker, Torgersen and Joel Trussell. Netflix ordered the series in 2020.

The court summary declared that it was constitutionally invalid for South Africans to lose their citizenship when acquiring those from other nations. The ruling comes after the Democratic Alliance (Da) appealed a high court order that originally dismissed the party’s application that the legislation was inconsistent with the South African constitution. However this new ruling reinstated Sa citizenship for all those who lost it.

Ritter’s casting rounds out the ensemble for the pilot, which features Bates as Madeline Matlock, Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, David Del Rio as Billy and Leah Lewis as Sarah.

The CBS Studios series centers on the brilliant septuagenarian Matlock (Kathy Bates), who rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm and uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from the inside. “Matlock” is executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman, Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen and John Will. He’ll portray Julian, the son of the head of the firm, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. However, he’s not to be underestimated. “Diligent and persistent with a lot to prove, he’s at odds with prioritizing his family and balancing his career. He always considers the good of the firm, even if it pushes the boundaries between his work and personal life,” reads the character’s description.
