Haley Bennett and Peter Dinklage reprise their roles from the 2018 Connecticut-based Goodspeed Musicals production of Cyrano, which also had a limited run off-Broadway in New York in late 2019.

Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655) was a real-life French writer. In 1897, Edmond Rostand wrote a highly-fictionalized version of Cyrano's life. Rostand's version of events has inspired many further retellings. This film is based on the stage play written by Erica Schmidt which premiered in 2019 with Peter Dinklage in the leading role. Schmidt and Dinklage are a married couple in real life.
