The Golden Raspberry Awards gave itself a trophy for the first time in the ceremony’s 43-year history.

“For nominating someone that should not have been considered, a blunder that was put through the blender and pulverized from one corner of the internet to the other and all media in between, instead of handing out a Worst Actress statuette this year, we’re giving this Razzie to the Razzies,” said announcer Bill A. Jones in a winners’ video, which you can see above.

In January, the Razzies faced backlash for nominating 12-year-old “Firestarter” actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong. In addition to apologizing and raising the minimum age to 18, the awards body replaced her nomination with its own name – and won by “a landslide.”

Drew Barrymore criticised the Razzies for nominating 12-year-old Firestarter actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the Worst Actress category.

The parody awards group, which famously recognises films and performances they feel are the worst of the year, issued a public apology to Armstrong and confirmed her removal from the “final ballot” after her nomination drew intense backlash.

Barrymore was a child actor herself and even starred in the 1984 iteration of Firestarter when she was nine years old.

“I don’t like it,” Barrymore said of the nomination on CBS’s Talk of the Table on Thursday (26 January).

“Because she is younger and it is bullying,” she told host Gayle King. “I’m glad to see people didn’t jump on the ‘let’s make fun of her’ wave and instead said, ‘This isn’t right.’”

Barrymore spoke further about the controversy on her eponymous talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.

The Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the Razzies, which shame actors and filmmakers with an annual “worst of,” is getting blowback for including 12-year-old “Firestarter” actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong in its 2023 nominations, which were revealed on Monday.

Among those jumping in to defend Armstrong was 11-year-old actor Julian Hilliard, who plays Billy Maximoff on “WandaVision.”

“The Razzies are already mean-spirited & classless, but to nominate a kid is just repulsive & wrong. Why put a kid at risk of increased bullying or worse? Be better,” Hilliard tweeted. When someone suggested that that Razzies are just a “joke,” he responded, “Nope, not when it involves a kid. That ‘joke’ can have a very negative impact. They crossed a line.”

Alas, the past few years have made it very clear that at some point, we'll have to accept that the movie-to-musical pipeline (not to be confused with the movie-to-musical-to-movie pipeline) is here to stay. And even though I still shudder every time I remember that "Shrek The Musical" exists, it's always thrilling to learn that another musical is on the way. This time the title in question is "Heathers: The Musical." An adaptation of the 1988 film, "Heathers," this high-energy black comedy spent months on London's West End where it was filmed and will now stream as a Roku Original. Starting September 16, you can check out "Heathers: The Musical" anywhere that The Roku Channel streams.

Update 3/31: The organizers of the Razzies announced Thursday that they have rescinded Bruce Willis’ “Worst Performance” Award following news of the actor’s aphasia diagnosis . Willis previously had his own category at the 2022 Golden Raspberry Awards due to his many small roles in a string of straight-to-video action movies in 2021.

The year’s achievements in film will have to wait one more day for the Academy Awards, but the medium’s lows were dishonored on Saturday morning at the 42nd Golden Raspberry awards.

Netflix’s “Diana the Musical,” a filmed performance of the much-derided new Broadway musical based on the life of Princess Diana, had a clean sweep across all of its four nominations, winning in the categories of worst picture, worst director for Christopher Ashley, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal and worst supporting actress for Judy Kaye.

Warner Bros.’ “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was the runner-up, earning three wins in worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel; worst screen combo; and worst actor for LeBron James. Jared Leto, once in the awards season conversation for his performance in “House of Gucci,” took home the worst supporting actor prize for his performance in the Ridley Scott-directed crime epic.

Diana the Musical, the much-mocked telling of the life story of Diana, Princess of Wales, has swept the board at this year’s Razzie Awards.

In the Heights kicked off the summer with poor ticket sales and accusations of colorism for failing to have enough Afro-Latino actors in its cast. Dear Evan Hansen created the rare consensus of the year, hated by critics and audiences alike, and endured prolonged mockery on social media for its casting of the crow’s-footed Ben Platt as its teenaged protagonist.

Diana, Princess of Wales has been portrayed in no shortage of high profile works of fiction this past year, from her introduction on the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” to Pablo Larraín’s new film “Spencer,” and now a new Broadway musical. Nearly a quarter-century ago, Princess Diana died trying to out-race a swarm of paparazzi. Though many blamed the media for that tragedy, the tabloidification of her life story continues to this day, this time with that most bloated form of homage: the Broadway musical.

Filmed in an empty theater last fall but bursting with the kind of broad, feel-good energy that typically packs the house with tourists in non-covid times, “Diana: The Musical” brings “the people’s princess” directly to the people, in their homes, all but canonizing Diana as a feminist icon and saint in the process. With music by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics co-written by Bryan and book writer Joe Dipietro (the duo behind 2010 Tony winner “Memphis”), the project rides a fresh wave of Diana-mania: a kitsch stage tribute to balance the more critical/cynical takes still popping like so many flashbulbs around the late icon.

In March of last year, the new musical “Six” was literally minutes away from opening on Broadway when the coronavirus pandemic halted its performance. Eighteen months later, the musical by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow has officially bowed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Oct. 3, the second new production of the 2021-2022 season.

Moss and Marlow wrote the music, lyrics, and book for this reimagining of the six wives of King Henry VIII as their varyingly unfortunate tales of abuse, neglect, and, yes, beheading get remixed into contemporary pop confections performed concert-style as they attempt to name a leader of their band. The multi-hyphenate Moss also directs the musical with Jamie Armitage. The six wives are portrayed by Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Brittney Mack, Abby Mueller, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele.

Netflix have now given us the filmed version of the entirely gobsmacking and jawdropping Broadway show Diana: The Musical, shot at the Longacre theatre on West 48th Street last summer with no audience while the show itself was on pause due to the Covid pandemic. And while you’re waiting for Pablo Larraín’s movie Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Diana, this will have to do. Although there is a danger it will cause you to hyperventilate.

Netflix has released the official trailer for Diana: The Musical, director Christopher Ashley’s film of the Broadway production that premieres on the streamer Oct. 1.

Filmed in 2020 at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre (without an audience), Diana features the original Broadway cast of Jeanna de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. That cast – which had just begun performances on Broadway when the March 2020 pandemic shutdown hit – will return to the stage when Diana resumes live performances on Nov. 2 (with an official opening on Nov. 17).

The trailer features a video montage of clips from the show, built around de Waal’s performance of the musical number “If.”

The musical has book and lyrics by Joe Dipietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan, choreography by Kelly Devine and musical supervision and arrangements by Ian Eisendrath.
