As well as extensive CGI environments, some practical sets were built. Director Jon M. Chu wanted the world of Oz to feel like a real place for the actors and actresses, rather than just a computer-generated background. This included planting 9 million tulips to serve as part of the landscape for Munchkinland, although for wider shots VFX was still used.

Goofs
In the classroom scene where Elphaba causes the flowers to rise in the air and the pollen sends the students to sleep, you can clearly see a wire suspending one of the flowers as it moves. It will be interesting if this gets corrected for the streaming and DVD release of the film.

Quotes
Wizard: The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.

Crazy credits
The Universal Pictures logo used is the 1937-47 version, in tribute to the era when The Wizard of Oz (1939) was released, appearing in a zoom-out shot used by the current logo. The logo is also in green and pink, the colors of the main characters Elphaba and Glinda.

It's a musical! Enjoy it.

It's a musical, so you'll only enjoy this if you enjoy musicals. I've never seen the stage show but hold the original film in my heart and hard to believe there is 90 years time span between these two films. Despite what I'd seen of the bizarre promotional interviews of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the two of them are brilliantly cast. Acting is good, music and singing is good, production is good. A tad too long and storyline goes off tangent at times, but as someone who loved The Wizard of Oz during my 80s childhood, the final scene made me really emotional. All my childhood fears of the Wicked Witch of the West came back! It's left me looking forward to the next one, act 2.
